From BoxingScene A recent report by Dan Rafael revealed that negotiations between promoter Don King and HBO, regarding the pay-per-view telecast of Felix Trinidad vs. Roy Jones Jr., have not gone very well. Rafael says that a major disagreement over the value of the delayed broadcast rights has led King to begin serious talks with HBO's rival, Showtime. :: ::
That's actually from ESPN.COM http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=3008553
Not Sure why HBO is All "High & Mighty" about Broadcasting this Bout... SURE,it's SEVERAL Years Tooooooo Late, but So was Tyson-Holyfield I & II,Tyson-Lennox,Ali-Frazier III,Hopkins-Wright & PLENTY Of Other Fights Over the Years... REED
tyson vs holyfield had been mooted for years and people actually believed that tyson could become undisputed again tyson vs lennox had been built up for years and had to happen financially. wright beat tito and hop beat tarver, both of whom have big wins over both roy and tito. ali frazier 3 had to happen. the world can do without jones tito .
Tyson was EVERY BIT as SHOT as Roy & Tito...Frazier ARGUABLY was as Well...Holyfield was ONLY Chosen as a Tyson Opponent BECAUSE they ASSumed he was SHOT.... Wright & BHop Fought @ the WRONG WEIGHT,Several Years LATE... "The World can Do w/Out Jones-Tito" ???...Tell that to the SELL-OUT Crowd @ MSG & the 500,000 Peeps who Buy the PPV... REED
I don't think this one has anything to do with the HBO-Roy rivalry. Sounds more like a dispute over future broadcast rights - which is always an issue with King (it almost led to the cancellation of Jones-Ruiz, ironically enough), and how much HBO is willing to put up for the fight and said rights.
come on reed, the tyson holy rivalry goes all the way back to holyfield beating buster douglas. that's why it happened, because people wanted to see it badly and the money it would generate. roy vs tito isn't even in the same league as the thrilla in manilla in terms of people wanting to see the fight. maybe in roy BEAT tarver, instead of being happy to survive, and tito beat wright, instead of being happy to survive, you might have a point about hop vs wright. let's be honest, tito got completely embarrassed and retired and roy has been KO'd a few times. their appeals have dwained considerably
The FACT Remains,During his COMEBACK,Tyson PICKED Holyfield Because he THOUGHT Holy was SHOT... He Won the WBC Title from Bruno, the WBA from Seldon, then he RELINQUISHED the WBC Title Cause he DIDN'T Wanna Fight Lennox Lewis...Even Paid Lennox Step-Aside Money to ALLOW the Holyfield Fight... Come to Find Out,TYSON was the SHOT 1,Not Holy...Shit,the 1st Tyson-Holy Fight was Billed "Finally"...Cause CLEARLY that Fight was Much LATER than it Should've Been... But Peeps STILL Wanted to See it... No, Roy vs Tito ISN'T on the Level of the "Thrilla in Manilla" or Holy-Tyson,but REED GUARANTEES it'll OUTSELL Winky vs Bernard...Live Gate AND PPV... Like it or Not,There IS a DEMAND for Roy Jones vs Felix Trinidad... REED just Hopes All the Peeps that R BASHING this Fight Remain CONSISTENT & IGNORE the Bout on Fightnight... & DON'T Watch the Replay the Following Week,Either... REED
I agree. It's pretty odd imo. This isn't a freak show fight, sure they are both a few years past their best, but it's still a BIG matchup, and an exciting fight. Albeit one that Jones shall win easily, but still ::
:bears: :bears: Good job HBO. Now if only Showtime will follow suit. Fuck Tito, he should have stayed retired. I see this fight much like the last few fights of Tyson's career, as a freak show. I am not looking forward to it, nor am I taking it seriously.
The only pay per views Showtime has seem to be ones that HBO turns down. I'm glad I don't have to endure any HBO hype for this fight.
