I shouldn't have thought any version of Margarito would have lasted much longer. Anyone who struggles for any length of time with a converted pressure-fighter like Cotto , and throws those sloppy wide shots, is just asking to get done by Hearns.

The Williams fight would confirm as much. Margarito doesn't like it when he's got the height-reach disadvantage.

    Hearns does him in 2.

He'd certainly stop him at some point. Margarito might last 6 or 8 though, he does seem to have a downies punishment threshold.

Theres a HUGE differance between getting hit by Cotto and Hearns.

Tommy would have laid that piece of shit out cold in 4 rounds TOPS.

Leonard would have also knocked Phony out cold. Leonard hit MUCH harder than Cotto as well.

Cotto is heavy-handed but its a bit mechanical, a bit ponderous, its Vitali-style without the mass. Its all a bit bludgeoning.

I think Tommy would have fazed Margarito with his speed and dropped the hammer.

    A Duran-esque snooze awaits Tony.

Speaking of Duran, a Duran-Margarito matchup would have been a dream. Duran would have given that piece of shit an unholy beating.

There's also a large difference in size between Cuevas & Margarito. I see this playing out more like the McKraken fight than the Cuevas fight.

I picked Cuevas because he was probably the best Meheecanno that Hearns fought and had a reputation as a hard man.

Yes, Duran had a "correctness" about him, he wouldn't have the Wlad-esque "fear" that Cotto does, Duran would not make the mistakes Cotto did on the inside, instead he'd use his better form and shorter arms to make the most of the opportunities when Marg. got too close, he'd be beating him from short and medium distance all night. He also had better natural gas than Cotto and would be getting more work done, thus breaking cheater up sooner.

Size wouldnt matter worth a shit. Tommy had the power of a lightheavy (literally).

    Phony would need smelling salts.

It's not size that get's me, it's how wide open the relatively upright Margarito would be. If Paul Williams could find him, so could Hearns.

Prime Hearns could take out Phony and Tall Paul both on the same night. The gap between those two and Hearns is THAT big.

Hearns would win by stoppage but there are plenty fighters he fought who didn't end up needing smelling salts and several weren't as big or tough as Tony, who'd be a middleweight or BIG ass junior middleweight in 1982. As I said, this'd be like the McKraken fight but a bit more difficult. Tommy would need to use the perimeter of the ring and fight on the move, like he did for most of that one. Hearns TKO 8 or 9.

    Exactly.

Even if Phony had his loaded gloves, Duran still would have brutalized him.

How would Margarito fare against a prime Tito?

You're overrating the shit outta Phony.

    He's simply not that good.

He literally would not win a SINGLE round combined against Leonard, Duran, and Hearns.

The same as he would against Leonard, Duran, and Hearns. Terribly.

Tito KO 6, and it would have been BRUTAL.

Not well. Tito isn't half the fighter Hearns is but I think he'd beat Tony more quickly and more eye catchingly since he'd be more comfortable standing his ground and trading up close with Tony. Hearns would outbox Tony and soften him up for a while rather than let Tony crowd him.

He wouldn't win a round against Hearns. Not a single one. But he'd make Hearns decide to box. It'd be his easiest/least risky route to victory. Natural choice.

I'm just saying Tony isn't the 5'8 Ceuvas or 5'7 Duran who Hearns could occupy the center of the ring and bomb from 2 postcodes away, it's a different type of fight.

Guess we'll just have to disagree.

I think Tommy would have highlight reel KO'd him before the mid rounds.

Forget Tito, prime Vargas would have beaten Phony up badly.

Hearns was never highlight reel center-ring Hearns against other tall guys. He boxed outside.

He might actually beat him. Speed and explosiveness is what a guy like Margacheato hates. Not plodders with a left hook.

I was just gonna say that. Folks were saying the same kinda stuff about that fight.,..Hearns won't do so well against a fighter as tall as him...Shuler is the better inside fighter and a real middleweight, etc..

And the same was said about Fred Hutchings, who was as tall as Hearns and was good on the inside too, he was expected to give Hearns all kinds of trouble. Nope.

Margarito is way overrated. Hearns puts him to sleep early.

Tito's hook was wider. His right hand was probably a bigger faster shot. And yes, his feet were pure Ice Age treacle, in a jar.
