Some of the names look better on paper than they did in the ring.

They deffinitely would have looked much better on paper had they faught Hops earlier in his career. A good # of them would have been knocked out or brutally busted up back when he could sutain a good, consistent attack.

Hopkins was a HUGE middleweight, monsterous,..both De La Hoya and Tito were astonishingly smaller,..it's the equivalent of Paul Williams bullying Manny Pacquioa,..those victories aren't worth a shit at middleweight,..if Hopkins wants some respect, take on ANOTHER strong, young contender like Chad Dawson,..THEN we'll see how 'p4p great' he really is,.. amazing people are so hypnotised by this mythical p4p shit, that size doesn't seem to matter anymore :dunno: .

Hopkins does have a resume full of name fighters, plenty of middle defenses and now the man to beat at LHW :bears:

:nono: But let's say Bob Arum lures Manny Pacquio, then Juan Manuel Marquez up to welterweight, and Margarito monsters them and knocks them out cold,..would they be impressive victories for a fully fledged welterweight,..? :nono:

That's the one that should've openned peoples eyes,..the fact that Tarver was considered a large lightheavyweight,..yet was clearly the leaner fighter, with only half an inch height advantage,.. that's amazing, considering Hopkins moved up 2 weight divisions..

Hopkins is P4P#1 in building his career off beating smaller fighters, and charging in using his head to turn matches in his favor.

Fact is Hopkins is one of the most versatile and best tactical fighters ever.
He can circle and box your ears off (Trinidad, Tarver), he can fight inside, he can maul and mug you (Keith Holmes, Wright). Plus is defensive wiz who can make you miss with his guard, footwork, or rolling/parrying shots. He can win in any way possible. He's like a chameleon.

Plus I don't think there is any fighter today that imposes his will on guys like Hopkins does. Look at Joppy, Holmes, Wright, Trinidad, Hoya etc. By the end of the fight they are either knocked out or they look like they've had the life sucked out of them. He's probably one of the most sadistic fighters I've ever seen.

Lol, the guy is 42 years old, so what if he's now stacking the deck in his favour? And he made his career at middleweight, where he pretty much laboured in obscurity racking up wins against other middleweights until he was lined up to be the fall guy for that bum, Zombie Tito, but he didn't read the script. Cant' say I heard too many people complaining about The Zombie being the "smaller fighter" before that one. More like Hopkins was too old (then!!) and was going to get mowed down a'la Joppy.

How long ago is it now since Hopkins was considered an "old man" against Trinidad? And you're bitching about how he still finds ways to win, when all logic says he should have hung them up years ago.

Hey if you like fighters who fight like they are in the street or the prison shower, then you don't have to agree with me. I prefer people who box, it is boxing you know.

Hopkins is 6"1 with the clearly thicker build,.. Tarver is scrawny and meatless and just an inch taller at 6"2,.....are you quite certain that Hopkins is a natural middleweight, and Tarver a naturally "huge" lightheavyweight?...:dunno: because I tend to think that something doesn't quite add up there..

I wouldn't say that Tito was ASTONISHINGLY smaller. He would have looked much smaller if he had fought Keith Holmes. Holmes was a HUGE middleweight, so DK of course matched Hops with Holmes and Tito with a much smaller (than Holmes) Joppy.

Gimme a break. Tito was a zombie for his last few years at Welter. He had a REALLY hard time making 147. He should have been at 154 a few years earlier. He wasn't that much smaller framewise, but Hopkins was 156-158 for a number of his defenses.

Sure, Hops has never been the "prettiest" most aesthetically pleasing fighter in terms of textbook technique....

But the fact is he does everything well - and very few - if any - are more intelligent tactically/strategically in the ring or more versatile.

It's true that rough-housing and mauling and being dirty can be a part of his gameplan when he needs it; and that often adds to his awkwardness and plain 'ugliness' in his fights.

BUT...he uses it effectively when he needs it; he wins fights using those tactics if he needs to; and he's able to wear down almost anyone and take them out of their game plan with it.

Duran, Saddler, Gomez, Zivic, Armstrong, Moon, LaMotta, Marciano, Briscoe...and more recent fighters like Hatton, Tszyu, Chavez, etc. have used "dirty" fighting as a part of their tactical arsenal; sometimes elevating it to an artform.

So in the big scheme of things, it's not a big deal - though I personally dislike it too.

Hops' resume is good...some of his biggest victories are against "smaller" fighters; but then again, he's not the only 'great' to do that....see Hagler and Monzon, for starters (though the depth of their resumes when you go beyond the "big names" is arguably better than Bernard's).

I do think he's caught some guys at the right time too - but once again, that's not as uncommon as people like to believe.

    Peace.

True...but then again, even though Tito's reign isn't the most deep in terms of opposition, he WAS for the most part fighting full-fledged welterweights...or at least, guys that had been at WWT for a while vs. just coming up. Tito himself came from 140 lbs or under the welterweight limit for his first 16 or so fights.

    Peace.

Keith Holmes recently fought at junior middleweight,..that's a bit odd for a huge middleweight,..

What's more odd is Bernard Hopkins being praised as David conquering Goliath, when Tarver was much leaner, skinnier, had less reach, and a mere 1 inch height advantage. :notallthere: a rather odd description for a ''huge lightheavyweight'' verses a ''regular middleweight''.

    ....something doesn't quite add up...

I respect Hopkins because he reminds me of PBF: the same gritty, steely determination, ring smarts, iron will, rough upbringing, seemingly endless stamina, crafty moves that only real boxing afficionado like myself can notice, the humiliation they both administered to ODLH.......

When has Taylor ever used his head as effectively as Hopkins? Hopkins is a headbutt master.
