Is he almost as big as Trinidad was at his hight? Is he close to it? How many fights do you think he needs to surpass Trinidad's peak popularity?
no. because he seems mean. if i saw him in a bar, i'd keep him in the corner of my eye in case he tried to start some shit (hopefully he wouldn't because then i'd be fked). if i saw Tito in a bar, i'd buy him a drink - probably some puerto rican rum.
plus, Cotto has a real arrogant aura to him that makes him less likable. Tito walks in smiling and fearless. Cotto comes walking in like he's Jesus Christ or something. I think once he loses he'll become more likable. As it is, he's hard to take IMO. Great fighter, don't get me wrong. And that's most important of all.
that will never happen... Cotto is more skilled than Trinidad...and MIGHT end up having a better career, but he WILL NEVER...>NEVER be as popular..
precisely... though in fairness to Cotto, the same can be said of almost any other fighter (at least today). Put it this way - Cotto speaks much better English than Tito, yet Tito can vibe with any audience, regardless of language barrier. The same will never be said of Cotto, who at best can only continue to attempt to break away from his introverted ways.
if cotto knocks out delahoya and/or mayweather I suspect he will surpass a peak trinidad as a ppv attraction/ticket seller
Tito was too cool. I don't think Cotto will ever surpass him, as good as he can be he doesn't have the charisma and the power to attract the masses like Tito had.
BINGO! My cousin has seen Cotto a dozen times in PR and when he is walking around with his family ...THATS IT HIS FAMILY!no mas! When my mother & father saw Tito at the mall in PR my mom said my son is a huge fan of your's he said do you have a camera in spanish she said yes and the blew the entire roll taking pictuers with my family i still have the one of Dad and Tito..Priceless. To him he does everything to please his fan's and the less fortunate and you can't buy that with 100 titles.
all that stuff about charisma and personality is great. I've met both and I'd agree that trinidad is a nicer more outgoing guy. honestly its irrelevant. maybe trinidad will always remain more loved in puerto rico. so what! I'd venture to guess the boxing fans on the island will be watching when cotto fights just as they did when trinidad fought. they are the control group not the variable. if cotto knocks out delahoya (or to a lesser extent mayweather) then his profile wi'll surpass trinidad's (even at his absolute peak after he KO'd vargas and joppy)worldwide.
You are such an oversensitive pansy. :: :tease: Seriously, I don't know....Cotto IS very serious and introverted; but I had thought it's pretty widely reported that he is very much a fan's fighter; stopping to sign autographs, take pics and talk to fans even RIGHT BEFORE fights. He's very accessible and quite nice when he talks from everything I've heard. I don't take it as arrogant at all....he's just always very serious and focused. "Professional" comes to mind. But I can see what you're saying in that he can seem cold and distant. Peace.
this isn't true...lets not act like tito is some sort of phenomenon who trancsends puerto rico or his sport.. if anything trinidad's lack of speaking english has hurt his fame/market appeal in the united states. his charisma is limited to the puerto rico audience...
Honestly if you ask all of the PR champions they tell you the same thing thats fine with them, but Tito did transcend the fact that other then John John Molina there were no other champions that would just enjoy times with the fans OTHER then at a rally after a win. That i why even now the crowds are still the same fro Tito everywhere he goes.
oh, phonetap has no doubts about tito's favor and love affair with the puerto rican masses. however tito has never had that appeal outside of his puerto rican base and that's phonetap's point.
Honeslty the fact is they rather have a LOYAL fan base rather then a fan base that throws them 2 the wolves every other fight. But i see your point.
dsimon writes: You beat me to the proverbial punch Donny!! People just have to understand some things about Cotto. For example, I am a big fan of Cotto's and never was much of a Trinidad fan.... why? Because the guy raised up two sons, alone since being a teenager....two sons he goes into the ring with every fight. To me, knowing what it is like to raise two boys and still train, I know what a hardship that is... and I have a loving wife at home to help!! I worship Cotto for that reason, just like I worship Toney because even as a fat ass he backs up his skills in the ring, and again, you can't always look like a teenager to be able to back it up where it counts! I think in this case people on this thread may be Tito worshipping to a degree where they overlook how Cotto resonates with other people. Puerto Rican culture is very family oriented, and boxing is often a family affair, do people really think Cotto raising two boys while climbing the ranks won't be noticed? :eeeek: Thats an incredible achievment!
dsimon writes: Cotto also has more charisma than people think. He broods before fights, that is a way some people prepare. But brooding is something that allows great authors like Mailer (RIP Norman you were better than Hemingway) to write great stories. Foreman was a brooder. Brooders often conjure up images of visciousness and mean spirited beatings with a sadistic bent. People will see this side of Cotto as part of his character as a fighter and his charisma will go up. I could see him like Tyson in a few years.... Tyson was another sometime brooder btw.
I disagree with you, and point to the Jones-Trinidad presser tour as my proof. Roy shows up, stands in the middle of a room, and very few go out of their way to step to him. Why? Because he sends off the vibe that he's not interested in talking to anyone. Trinidad's ARRIVAL is announced, and everyone's already flocking to where he is heading. I agree that his lack of speaking English hurt his US marketability. But that's about where it ends. His fan-base/appeal isn't limited to Puerto Rico, or even just Spanish-speaking audiences. If you honestly believe that, then you're going to have to show me proof of it.
I don't know if I'd go that far. I've met Tito twice and both times you would have thought Elvis entered the building. I first met him at Oquendo-Tua and when he walked in and left, a huge crowd of people followed him in and out. Seems like the arena entered and left with him. The second time was at Mosley-Winky I. When Tito walked into the press room every camera and head turned (I think Winky was speaking at the time). Tito sat on the far left of the stage and damn near every photographer literally ran to that side of the stage. I hung around the arena a bit after the press conference had ended and as I was walking back to the Luxor I hear this huge crowd coming up behind me and it was Tito and Don King. I forget the name of the club that's in Mandalay but there were people waiting in line to get in and you could hear some yelling to Tito and Don King... And they didn't look Puerto Rican to me. ::
please, phonetap isn't buying this for a second. in a boxing enthusiast realm, trinidad will have favor but take them (jones & trinidad) outside of that element and into a mainstream enviornment then tito wouldn't be recognized or embrased any quicker than jones. if trinidad turned up at a los angeles lakers or new york knicks game...phonetap highly doubts the cameras would zoom in his direction. put trinidad in a room with sports icons from the various sports and he'd be barely noticed. put tito in a room with lebron james, tiger woods, jeff gordon, shaquille o'neal, alex rodriquez, barry bonds, shit...mike tyson and phonetap promises you, after a few moments people will forget he's even there. you will never in a thousand years, convince phonetap that trinidad has come anywhere near being a transcending figure of his sport...sorry.
no duh...you were in a boxing enthusiast enviornment. lets see tito do this is a NON-boxing venue, outside of puerto rico. if you witness this come back and share it.
tap, your argument was that Tito's fan base doesn't extend beyond Puerto Rico. Muzse and I just both told you that you're wrong, so now you're changing up. Maybe you failed to get your point across the first time. I don't disagree that Tito isn't much of a mainstream star as the others. But that wasn't the point I was making. My point (which I am now repeating) was that Tito can vibe with any audience, even with language barriers in place, and is more comfortable in doing so than just about any other fighter today. I'll stop here though, as your past few posts suggest that this discussion has become a tad personal with you.
I don't get what the argument is here. Trinidad is a lot more charismatic than Cotto, he's a fan's fighter, one of them-a rare quality. Sadly, he doesn't speak english, he's not american (yes, I know), he's never been marketed much outside his sport, and he's in a minority sport; therefore, his crossover potential has always been limited. Cotto shows even less promise here, as he doesn't touch people the same way. I agree roughly with tap though, it like two bald men fighting over a comb, neither of these guys have/will reach far beyond the world of boxing, but Cotto is unlikely to reach the same heights as trinidad within it
