That said, for a slam dunk Fight of the Year candidate, I'm surprised nobody here has really discussed the bout since Monday. I mean shit, it's been 3 months and we STILL can't seem to sidestep Floyd-DLH debates.

I guess it's indicative of what really matters to fight fans today. No longer does a great fight stand on its own terms.

Was it a PPV? Maybe it's just more people didn't see it as you guys think. I know I missed it. If it was a PPV and will be reshown on HBO this weekend, expect more yackty yack afterwards.

The only thing that surprised me here is how many people picked mini-queerquez by knockout, and made fun of me for picking Vasquez by knockout. Some people around here just don't know boxing. It's like they're brand new. :dunno:

    no it was Showtime

Well, it left a sour taste in many fight fans' mouth as the ref made a bad mistake and stopped it to soon.
That was the worst stoppage since Richard Steele blew the Chazez-Taylor 1 fight and the Tyson-Ruddock 1 fights, and people just don't want to talk much about it much anywhere.
The referee should be fined, he should be suspended.

i haven't seen the fight, but was it really that bad?

    ......

No, it wasn't bad at all and his post is BS. Some people think it was bad, plenty don't though. Marquez got stopped, he needs to get over it. The "quitter" bashed Marquez's ass.

As soon as I saw Marquez stumble back without getting hit I knew that it was about to be stopped.

I would have liked to see it go a little longer, but overall it wasn't that bad of a stoppage.

marquez's legs were gone seconds before the stoppage. what if the fight had continued and marquez got seriously hurt or something?

    Awful.
Vasquez was cut to ribbons and the fight would have been stopped in Marquezs' favor.
Marquez was hit with some good punches, punched back and went to the ropes and sagged back just a bit, and the drama queen ref jumps in arms waving loving his 15 minutes of fame that he took front and center stopping a great fight.
It was enough to make anyone with a bit of boxing knowledge sick.

I guess that would have been OK for some people. He was clearly done, I can't believe anyone is crying about that stoppage.

yea, i didnt think it was bad at all.

what if the ref had allowed the fight to go on and they stopped the fight at the end of the round due to vasquez's cuts? that would sucked more.

Marquez was out. He reeled back dizzy and Vasquez pursued him to end it. The Referee was a GOOD ref. That stoppage was perfect IMO.

He even got the fake knockdown call correct in round 5. If it was Jay Nady, Vasquez would've been properly fucked.

Gary Shaw can eat a dick for trying to blacklist that ref, I hope Gary Shaw falls down some stairs.

why don't you just get it over with and kill yourself

great stoppage, marquez was gone and would've gotten seriously hurt if it had continued.

But from a faggot who thinks Benny Paret was a noble warrior who would have rather died than quit, what can you expect

Doubt they would have stopped it on the cuts when marquez was getting his ass kicked. he wouldn't have made it until the end of the round anyways IMO.

Seriously what is the go? I think youve copped one to many right hands from Diaz. Wake up to yourself.

no. it was not. and this is a perfect example of why you need to watch it for yourself and basically discard the impressions of others.

It left a bad taste in your mouth. There wasn't a huge outcry that he'd stopped it too soon.

Some thought it was, but it's not like either of the fights you mentioned. Your analogies are horrible.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but when placed in the context you've done...it's difficult to find common ground to agree.

Great fight, Vazquez took alot of punishment, but was the better and stronger fighter. I look forward to III next year. Guaranteed classic.

i thought it was kind of pathetic that Marquez complained the fight hadn't been stopped due to Vazquez's cuts. as bad and as deep as they were, there actually wasn't that much blood - certainly not enough for the fight to have been stopped.

  26. Father of Muzse

    "However"

Did you see how much blood gushed out of the wound when Vazquez slipped the previous round?

I just think Karl is way off base here. Imagine if Vazquez would have been on the offensive, the ref steps in mid-action, to have the doctor look at the cut and then stops the fight.

Wouldn't that have been an injustice to Vazquez? :dunno:

  27. jaws1216

    jaws1216 "Twinkle Toes" McJack

    of course not.

Vasquez is a proven quitter who has no honor, courage or decency.

The minute the tiniest gash opened, he wanted to quit, but for some reason nobody would let him be a coward in back to back fights, so alas the show went on and he received a gift stoppage that would've made richard steele proud.

I agree with that. For all of the complaints about a bad stoppage, to also bitch that the fight wasn't stopped on cuts is flat out contradictory.

I agree w/ Val, Joony Double L and others - it may have been a bit premature, but certainly not a horrible stoppage, nor did you get the sense that Marquez was going to turn it around.

And for what it's worth, I'd rather hear straight from the doctor's mouth that he was moments away from stopping the fight on cuts. I know Shaw said it afterward... but I'd feel more secure hearing it from the source than 3rd party.

yes! absolutely. and i think any attempt to equate Vazquez's cuts with Marquez's inability to stand without collapsing into the ropes is a joke.

also, if i'm not mistaken, Marquez acted like Vazquez's cuts were over-looked out of favoritism of some sort, or corruption. that just seems real pathetic to me.

    Couple additional points...

1). If the fight were to be stopped on cuts, it should have happened prior to that round starting. With that said, look at what we would have missed and how unsatisfying the end would have been. Very anti-climatic.

2). Regarding the alleged "quick" stoppage. Think back to Round three when Marquez got badly buzzed, hung on then almost turned around the fight with his hard counters and right hands off Vazquez's dome.

The final round saw NONE of the same firepower from Marquez coming back at Vazquez "however" Vazquez had the same amount of power and bad intentions on his shots. Marquez was weakly throwing back and had NOTHING in his legs compared to round three.

Vazquez was clearly stronger and fresher, Marquez was clearly fading and not offering anything of substance back.
