Looking forward to a fresh batch of people asking me about this great fighter they saw a film about and then their disappointment when I inform them of the truth
A flukey win over Griffith that I'd bet he couldn't have duplicated in 10 tries... He had that going for him giardello schooled him, El Feo schooled him and Tiger kicked the dogshit out of him... He was a con artist who got a lot of well-meaning people to go to bat for him on false pretenses
Why was his conviction overturned then? I'm not too familiar with his story but I'd like to understand why you guys hate him and believe he was really the murderer.
He was never found not guilty... There were a lot of police screwups that enabled his release ... He got off on technicalities... He was never cleared
Why the Laughing Smiley???...Are You Suggesting the Motion Picture Dedicated to the "Hurricane" was EXAGGERATED???... REED:stir:
My issues with him are not his murder charge, which i think he was innocent. It's how the movie portrayed him as could have been all time great had he not gone to jail. I have had casual boxing fans come up to me and put him on their all time list after seeing the movie and not even blinking when doing it. I just have to laugh, show them his record and then tell them dont believe everything they see.
REED Never Had Much of an Opinion on Ruben Carter UNTIL the Denzel Flick...w/the Success of it, "Friday Night Fights" Had Hurricane In Studio One Weekend... Teddy Atlas Showed GENUINE Respect to Him, they had a Good Boxing Back & Forth, then Teddy Asked Who his TOUGHEST Opponent Was...Carter Said it was HIMSELF & Suggested His Losses Boiled Down to Things HE Could've Done Differently, as Opposed to What his Conquerors Did TO Him::... Teddy Asked him 1nce Again, Towards the End of the Exchange & Carter REPEATED his Response... Hate to Say it, but Carter DID Come Off as a ME Guy, a Bit of a CON ARTIST, as You Stated...REED Can't & Won't Speak on Carter's LEGAL Situation, but his FNF Appearance Rubbed REED the Wrong Way, Slightly... Unfortunately the more I read about him and the case, the more doubt I have on his innocence. The movie was complete bullshit, although Denzel is a great actor. It's funny talking about this over at ESB/BoxingForum24. They seem offended when people bring up him possibly being guilty and how he apparently beat a female lawyer unconcscious. She was working for Carter, trying to help his case.
Sarcasm aside, Unfortunately, it was not exaggerated, it was worse. Jewisons "In the heat of the Night" was a great film with great acting and above all a really solid script. "The Hurricane" was a total crock of crap played out by 2nd rate bums like Dan Hedaya and Denzel, featuring cardigan wearing Canadians. It's basically made up shit. I think Barney Ross and Joey Giardello are two of a very very small number of boxers who actually felt the need to sue over what was done to them by movie directors.
