...convincingly and impressive and then retires, where does he rank all time?

Is he in the Robinson-Armstrong-Ali-Duran discussion?
Is he in the Leonard-Hagler-Hearns-Whitaker-Chavez-Monzon discussion?
Or is he is another discussion (i.e. a little lower than the above two)?

He'd be top 15-20 all time.

You know Sly.... when a guy retires there is usually a period of time that has to pass before people start to look at him through a historical lense and not just pass judgement in a nonchelant fashion.

Here are some quotes about a pretty decent fighter circa about the time when he retired. "Guy gets by on gift decisions, Guy is not a great, he got hit too much on the ropes, guy is arrogant, guy only has a jab really. yeah, Ali was no slouch but apparently had a few foibles that made people think. Duran? best remembered for "No Mas" something many people maintain he didn't even utter... ahd he had even beat Sugar Ray Leonard before!

I don't know how I will personally view Mayweather. But history does tend to make fighters better, not worse. Today Ali is always acknowledged as a great fighter, Duran also and rightly so.

My personal feeling is Mayweather would rank among the greats. Retiring undefeated after beating Hatton and then Mosley/Cotto would be an amazing feat.

I've been one of the biggest Mayweather detractor because his safety-first style doesn't lend itself to great fights or just plain greatness. But to parlay that style into a 40-0 career record while fighting championship caliber opposition should certainly bolster Mayweather's standing among his all-time peers.

To retire as an undefeated 5 division champion with multiple big names on his resume would be an accomplisment that boxing has never seen before. That in itself SHOULD qualify Mayweather to be mentioned among the top 10 or 15 fighters in history.

If Floyd beats previously undefeated Hatton and Cotto, in both convincing and exciting manner, and retires unbeaten himself...he surpasses Leonard, Hearns and fighters on that level P4P, no doubt about it.

He would have won legitimate titles in 130,135,140,147 and 154 and would haev beaten the likes of De La Hoya, Coralles, Castillo, Judah, Hatton and Cotto among others.

His fight with DLH was neither convincing nor exciting. A piece of sh*t performance by Floyd and he looked like crap. A prime Oscar eats the bastard up.

I disagree, I think he needs to beat Williams but I still wouldnt rate him above Leonard.

    Floyd's ALREADY N that Leonard-Hearns-Hagler-Whittaker-Monzon Class,N REED's Opinion...

2 Reach that Ali-Robinson-Armstrong-Duran Class,he's Gonna have to Beat Hatton & the Shane/Cotto Winner IMPRESSIVELY & then CLEAN OUT the Rest of 147 (Williams,Cintron,Margarito,Clottey,etc)...

Yes,Floyd Won Titles from 130-154,but THE ONLY Division Floyd has CLEANED OUT was 130...HOW do U Rank Floyd HISTORICALLY Amongst the Great Lightweights,Jr. Welters or Super Welters???...U CAN'T...

Beat Hatton this Year,Beat Cotto/Shane by the Middle of NEXT Year, then Add 2-3 More ELITE Welterweight Names...By the Middle of 2009,Floyd could REALISTICALLY Say he's N that Ali-Robinson-Armstron-Duran Class,if he's STILL Undefeated...

I really doubt he gets past Hatton AND the winner of Mosley-Cotto. Hatton will beat him, he has the perfect style to beat him, he'll outwork him. However, if he does he would be top 15-20.

He would be with those names if he fights: Hatton, Cotto, Mosley, Cintron.. if he beats 2-3 of them and losses to someone else in a competitive fight he'll still prove greatness. I would love to see Floyd come and get a big win after a loss.

Bullshit... If people call Sugar Ray Leonard a 5 division champ, then Mayweather certainly is..

He won titles at 130,135,140,147 and 154...

Again, I would be the first to slam Floyd for not really beating the best guy at each weight, but if historians give Leonard credit for titles at 168 and 175 for beating Donny freaking LaLonde then Floyd gets the same break.

I'm always suprised when people say the DLH fight wasn't good.

it was EXCITING for me! I'm a BOXING fan... it's not like any of expected to boxers like DLH and Floyd to abandon defense and trade bombs like Gatti-ward or something! what we saw was SKILLS and Floyd DOMINATED DLH

if FLoyd were to whup Hatton and then Shane or Cotto.. that would be impressive!

I personally think he'll whup Hatton... impressivly and Shane will whup Cotto but I dont think we'll see a Shane-Floyd fight

seriously Hanzy... ? Do you think that?

I know a lot of guys who don't like FLoyd and didn't like Pernell but I LOVE to see guys who can really "BOX"

Floyd schooled DLH! the only one remotely hurt in that fight was DLH... I thought it was a GREAt fight that FLoyd controlled and was never really in danger

DLH is not "shot and 35" when he fights guys like Mayorga... just when he fights BOXERS that can school his ass!

That ain't boxing man. Come on! That's hit and run. Nobody liked that fight other than DLH haters and Floyd lovers. Look at Floyd/Baldomir. Boring crap! Most of the crowd headed for the exits in the 9th round.:dunno:

It was neither. Just a case of a boxer who thinks he's hot sh*t but really is a waste of fans' ppv dollars. Like I said, the only people who enjoyed Floyd/DLH were Floyd fans and DLH haters. Hell you had the crowd chanting "UFC....UFC" after that crap fight was over with. Floyd/Baldomir was the worst ppv in the last 5 years. Every fight on that card was awful, no redeeming factor whatsoever.

    Then STOP Watching Floyd:dunno: ...

Make Sure to MISS Floyd-Hatton AND Floyd vs the Winner of Cotto/Shane...

    Simple as THAT...

REED Himself was UNDERwhelmed by Floyd-DeLa,but Floyd HAS Been ENTERTAINING MORE than he's Been "Boring" Throughout his Career...

NO Fighter is "Exciting" 100% of the Time...

The competition really just isn't around to elevate Floyd to the levels of Leonard, Duran, Robinson, Armstrong and Charles...nor has he asserted a reign of dominance over a plethora of top ranked contenders.

He's one of the modern fighters (Jones, Morales, De La Hoya, Fenech) who's achievements in weight jumping are watered down due to the proliferation of weight divisions, previous day weigh ins AND a general lack of 'the best fighting the best'.

I highly disagree that "no one" liked that fight

I LOVE seeing shit like that..

you had a bigger guy but still a good "boxer" (DLH)

and he couldn't do SHIT with Floyd..

it's not running or hit and run.. it's BOXING!

The Sweet Science baby!! hit and dont get hit!!

I know most casual fans like guys to slug it out.. but you gotta appreciate the ART man!!

I love watching guys like Floyd, Pernell, Toney (sometimes)
to be able to just slightly and calmly move and not get hit.. slipping shots... it's impressive! Floyd DOMINATED the fight IMO.. it was not a slug fest.. but it shouldn't be. these guys are skilled!

I like Floyd's outbursts towards Larry Merchant in the post fight interviews. Merchant's just keeping it real and Floyd's going apesh*t like a school kid. "Y'all don't ever listen to Larry, he's never been in the ring, he don't know nuttin' about boxing!"
All the while, Merchant's trying to stop himself from laughing.
Then in the press conference Floyd gets teary-eyed and needs a shoulder to cry on cause he can't get no love.

Believe it or Not,a LARGE % of Boxing Fans have Looooooooooooong AWAITED the Day when Larry Merchant FINALLY Got Put N his Place...

    & Floyd DID That...

He NIPPED Merchant's BITCHING N the Bud AND Merchant CHANGED the Subject Altogether...The Guy who SPECIALIZES N BULLYING Fighters During Interviews GOT Bullied...
