Very few,if any, is the simple answer to the question.

How many fighters would have ever believed, back in the day, that PED's or steroids, would have been any use to them?

You saw how slow boxers were to embrace new training methods, never mind designer gear. They ate steaks and ran in heavy boots. Most training and nutrition was pretty rudimentary and basic by modern standards.

When did fighters even begin lifting weights?

Guys were expected to work hard and being shape, but there was very little real science to it. For decades boxing was based on the staples of skipping, running, shadow-boxing, sparring, calisthenics, etc. Guys worked hard. But not scientifically per se.

Weight lifters were already onto the testosterone by the 1960's, thats known by now.

Boxers were always way behind on that stuff. Rocky Marciano had big heavy punching bags. Charlie Goldman said Rocky was getting bored with the bags, so he got him a rubber ball and got Rocky to play with it and catch it at different heights. Wow. Rocky wouldn't have wanted gear, believing that the only way to get stamina was to earn it. People were like that back then, they believed in no-pain-no-gain.

Look at all the boxers today whom we don't suspect of taking PED's....do they want to get beaten up, or do they believe there are no advantages to it in any case? Boxers are stubborn when it comes to changing.

Aaron Pryor, maybe, that one night.

Up the so-called Modern Era, I don't know of ANY fighter who would have been on anything that would have been remotely beneficial to them or which they would have regarded as being beneficial.

Ali definitely would have failed most tests on the night he took the Holmes fight. Like touching his finger to his nose. God knows what he was on that night.

I doubt Roy was on gear, honestly. He was jus that great of an athlete and a fighter.

David Haye is a guy who should consider himself lucky. He's on that stuff too.

Always wondered about my favourite fighter, Lennox Lewis, bulking up 20 pounds of pure muscle in the 90s when steroids were rampant in sport but no one talked about them.

Lewis was a big rawboned guy, what's 20lbs to a 6'5" guy who weighs 220 for fun?

It raises the issue as to "Ped's" anyways....you might have 10 guys taking something, and not a single one of them is taking the exact same stuff. How can something that lets a man add mere bulk be regarded necessarily as "performance enhancing"....:dunno:

The tests are different it seems, in any case, a VADA test might catch you on something that a WADA test misses....and no test is going to detect the mixed-bottle type stuff.

Haye was swigging religiously from some bottle on the way to the ring, I wonder what that was about.

Lennox is known for loving to eat. He used to eat stacks of pancakes. No surprise he bulked up. His brother was a big guy too according to my stepdad who was in the army with him.

Ali was on thyroid medication, similar to ephe-drine as far as I know. Aaron Pryor drank asthma medication which opened up his lungs and let him breathe better. In fact, I think Pryor was on ephe-drine.

This is one of the issues I take with the entire PED scandal........is it not the case that testosterone supplements are really only of use to small guys who want to minimize muscle losses during dieting to make weight??

What use are testosterone supplements to guys who have no weight limits and are easy gainers in the first place? :dunno:

It seems that the PED in question will differ across weight classes and fighters themselves.

JC Chavez uses a diuretic, for instance.

Testosterone makes you stronger and more powerful---including your punching power. That's useful for anyone.

Yet Peterson couldn't crack an egg, in terms of the power we have seen at 140, he is nowhere, so to speak. :dunno:

And if you aren't eating, and finding it hard to make the weight, what use are these small, slow-releases?

I am not trying to throw dirt on the general notion of people using stuff, but I am questioning the magnitude of the effective gains, the upside of it all.

Baseball has provided everyone who is familiar with baseball the magnitude you are looking for and it is substantial.

Guys who would hit 40 homeruns in a season hit 55. Guys who would hit 50 homeruns hit 60+. Guys who would hit 500 hr's in their career are screaming past 600. Guys who would steal 30 bases in a season can steal 40. I assume that all of the pitchers throwing in the upper 90's can be attributed to juice, too, when many of them would otherwise be low to mid 90's guys. I believe that players come back from injuries much sooner than they used to and I believe that must in large part be due to illegal PEDs.

Yes he looked thin when he started. He wasn't filled out yet. And he was >230lb on his pro debut.

8" wrist. Big. Naturally bigger than the Klits.
