Maxboxing's fight schedule lists it as PPV... At Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, NJ (PPV) Shannon Briggs (48-4-1) vs. Sultan Ibragimov (20-0-1) (The Ring Magazine #5 Heavyweight vs. Unranked) (WBO Heavyweight belt) (PPV) Calvin Brock (30-1-) vs. Alex Gonzales (18-4) (PPV) Shamone Alvarez (17-0) vs. Jose Luis Cruz (32-2-2) (PPV) Giovanni Lorenzo (23-0) vs. Bruce Rumbolz (21-12-2) Robert Stieglitz (29-1) vs. Marlon Hayes (23-6) Charles Cavallo (15-0) vs. TBA Rock Allen (10-0) vs. TBA While USA Today's schedule lists it as HBO. At Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, N.J., (HBO), Shannon Briggs, Brooklyn, N.Y., vs. Sultan Ibragimov, Russia, 12, for Briggs' WBO heavyweight title; Shamone Alvarez, Atlantic City, N.J., vs. Jose Luis Cruz, Santa Ana, Calif., 12, for the vacant WBO-NABO welterweight titles. If this fight is on PPV, then I've lost all faith in boxing. I'm guessing Max just made a mistake and the fight is on HBO. TFK
It's PPV - but ONLY because neither HBO or Showtime were interested in the fight. The price tag was too high for ESPN2 (where it belongs) or any other non-premium network. So, it comes at $29.95 I'll be watching Game 6 of Detroit/Cleveland. Tomorrow is my birthday, a day to receive and not give, and no way in hell am I giving $30 to watch this fight, least of all to a bunch of classless muthafuckas like Warriors Boxing.
this is a prime example of the problems in boxing. This isn't a PPV. It's a decent fight for BAD or Showtime. It would be huge for ESPN to cover it, but stupid fucking promoters and dumbass boxers think they are bigger than what they are. :flip:
You're F'n kidding me. This fight, which to the average boxing fan, is an over the hill mediocre heavyweight who looked beyond terrible in his last fight, against some foreign guy that nobody has ever heard of, for one of the countless Heavyweight title belts. And it's on PPV. This is what boxing has come to. This would be a nice fight for Wide World of Sports on a Saturday Afternoon. But for PPV? Do you think there are many boxing fans out there, even hardcore one, who after seeing Briggs total non effort in his last fight, are gonna shell out their hard earned money for this fight, even if it is for the meaningless trinket known as the WBO Title? Disgraceful. TFK
And my usual counterpoint... If none of the networks are interested in airing the fight, what are the fighters supposed to do - not fight? Fights are offered on PPV as means for the promoter(s) to hopefully recoup some (if not all) of what they spent in order to present the fight. Putting a fight like this off-TV guarantees that they lose money. Whereas even if only 10,000 people order the fight, that's $300,000 closer to the break-even point. This fight was supposed to be on HBO in March, only Briggs got sick (pneumonia) and was forced to withdraw. HBO was only interested in the fight as a package deal with Wlad-Austin, where they were going to air a split-broadcast and flirt with the idea of the two winners eventually facing each other. When the fight was rescheduled, HBO was no longer interested. Showtime elected to air an Elite XC card (part on Showtime, the other part on PPV). And as said earlier, none of the other networks expressed interest simply because they don't want to spend anything to air such a fight. So again I ask - what should the promoter do? Run the fight off TV and guarantee a financial loss? Not schedule the fight at all?
How much do you think it costs to air a pay-per-view? I wonder how many buys you need just to cover the costs of airing a PPV.
:nono: Uh uh uh uh uh!,..he played rhythm guitar for 30 minutes, then he unleasched an incredible solo at the end, I think it was a well put together composition.
it depends on the company. it costs considerably more to deal with HBO and Showtime, though I'm not sure of the exact splits. Some distributors go as "cheap" as $60,000
Now that you mention it, whatever happened to the elite fc card?? Did it do well enough for showtime to air more events like that? It's been a long time and I've never heard about ratings, or showtime ready to air another MMA event :dunno:
IF either was any good he´d win easily, since they both suck, it is a pickem fight. I have a feeling Briggs will win.
Interesting analogy, but I'll do you one better. They were like 2 kids holding their toy guitars motionless in front of the TV for 30 minutes, trying to decide who gets to play Guitar Hero 2 first, and when one kid finally plays his first song, the other kids just gives up and put his toy guitar down. TFK
Um.... as mentioned, they're airing a card tomorrow night :: I think the first hour will be on Showtime, and the rest is on SET-PPV
Elite-XC has a split card on Showtime and PPV on Saturday in conjunction with K-1 Hero's, that has been doomed to fail since the beginning, and will most likely bomb, and may seriously hurt the future of both Elite-XC and K-1 Hero's, at least in America. For starters, they decided to hold the card in the L.A. Coliseum, which seats about 100,000 people. Even if tickets were free, they'll be lucky to draw a fraction of that. Second, one of the headline fighters, Hong Man Choi, who was to fight Brock Lesnar of WWE fame (making his MMA debut), was pulled from the fight just days ago because of a medical issue. He was replaced with Min Soo Kim, a 2-5 fighter with losses to Bob Sapp and a way over the hill Don Frye. He does have a win over former WWE wrestler Sean O'Haire, so I wonder if they'll press that angle. Two of the fighters who came out of the last EliteXC card looking good and originally scheduled to fight, Antonio Silva (who KO's Cabbage) and Gina Carrano (a woman fighter who won the most exciting fight of the night) also have had to pull out because of injury. The fight between Ray Sefo and Marvin Eastman has also been pulled. In addition, Choi Mu Bae has been pulled from his fight with Mighty Mo Siliga, and replaced by Ruben Villareal at the last minute. So what at first looked like a pretty good night of fighting, has just been decimated. We still get Lesnar's MMA debut, the Royce Gracie\Sakuraba rematch (years too late), and the MMA debut of ex NFL Player Johnny Morton, but that's hardly any consolation considering what it was supposed to be. That's not even toughing on all the non injury related problems they've been having, with getting liscenses, etc. I had planned on ordering the PPV, but I doubt I will now. But still, it's a better buy then Briggs\Ibragimov. TFK
I wish you would've said that in beginning rather than reading through all of that. This card, even if all of the aforementioned, is at best on par with the card Showtime debuted with a few months ago. That certainly wasn't worth paying for - it was a night filled with names v. club fighters, save for the main event which turned out to be anti-climactic and with zero action to boot. To say you "doubt" you'll buy it is to say you're still up in the air about it. I'll say this, Briggs-Ibragimov and Shamone Alvarez-Jose Luis Cruz, are both pick-em fights. That sounds like, according to your post and accounts from many others, at least one more competitve fight than the Elite XC show has to offer. Sorry dude, but you're never gonna convince me that you're anything more than an MMA apologist disguised as a disgruntled boxing fan.
:: And.... TFK ducks yet ANOHTER post! In a language that maybe he can understand... if the fight wasn't on PPV, it wouldn't be on TV. Simple as that. Do what you want.
I generally don't have any issues w/ TFK, I think he's an alright dude, but I honestly think he should be banned from the boxing section of this and any other board.
Well he picks and choses the posts that he responds too. It's annoying. It's also pretty gay when he cuts boxing down, and then goes on to defend the UFC or some other MMA organization for doing the same thing. I mean seriously... a UFC fan saying that another sport has to much PPV? Are you fucking kidding me?!
Jake, why exactly was HBO not interested in the rescheduled fight? The co-broadcast with Wlad/Austin makes alot of sense to set up a ppv between the winners?:dunno:
they just wanted it as an excuse to re-broadcast Wlad's fight that night. They were only interested in this fight as a doubleheader, not as a stand alone event. For that, they should've told the promoters to push it back to July 7, and then package it with Wlad-Brewster II.
How am I an MMA apologist? I post things as I see them. I'm an MMA fan, and a boxing fan, albeit, as you said, a disgruntled one. I won't buy the Briggs PPV, and why would anyone, especially based off of his last fight? Seriously, give me a reason why I, or anyone, should pay to see Shannon Briggs fight? I doubt he'll be any different tomorrow. If you want to waste your money watching a juiced up never was stand around waiting to throw punches, feel free. But don't doubt my place as a boxing fan because I won't buy it. And the K1 card is still a bit intriguiging, if only to see how Brock Lesnar does in his debut. The guy is a monster with a legit wrestling background, who's never fought before, and a lot of MMA fans are wondering if he can make the transition from NCAA and 'Professional' wrestling to MMA. Also, it may be the last chance to see Royce Gracie fight, which is another reason to consider buying it. He's well past his prime, but he's a legend in MMA, and while his best days are far behind him, he's nowhere near that Evander Holyfield stage. Sorry dude, but you're never gonna convince me that you're anything more than a boxing apologist who's anger at boxing's recent failures is wrongly directed at MMA. TFK
What was there to duck? If HBO or Showtime isn't interested, then why should I be interested? It should be on ESPN instead of PPV. If they're gonna lose money on the fight, lose money on ESPN where many more fans will be exposed to the fight. Or put it on a card with a good enough undercard to warrant HBO's attention. TFK
You think I should be banned because I disagree with your opinions on boxing? That's some Maxboxing shit right there. I'm sorry if I don't share the same rosy outlook about boxing that you do, I guess I'm just more of a realist then you. TFK
If you can miss the point more than this, I don't wanna see it. My head could explode. Jake has clearly stated in this thread that he is NOT buying the Briggs PPV. 1-800-ABC-DEFG
Why should you be interested? It's a f'n Shannon Briggs fight. The guy was NEVER good. I honestly don't care that the fight is hidden away on PPV somewhere... I never wanna see Briggs fight again anyway. And what's there to duck? Obviously something, because you shamefully ducked the post.
I cut down boxing when it deserves it, and Briggs\Sultan being on PPV deserves it. I also call out MMA when it deserves it. Hell, I stated this trainwreck of a PPV on Saturday could do severe damage to EliteXC and K-1, but I guess that's defending MMA somehow? It's sad to see boxing fans so angry at MMA, when MMA has nothing to do with boxing's piss poor state these days. Point your anger where it belongs, at boxing itself. TFK
And we should pay to watch Royce Gracie now? I bet Holyfield is more competitive with anyone in the division (save Wlad) than Royce was last year vs. Hughes. That fight was a joke. I guess you paid for that one too. ::
