Going by this list that I had found, a majority of the ring deaths were not in rounds 13-15. http://ejmas.com/jcs/jcsart_svinth_b_0700.htm What do you guys think? This is some solid info.
We will never see anything which is not conducive to the interests of the managers and promoters. This may include a lot of certain fights, of any scheduled duration.
If there's a God we will. And amateur boxing will return to being boxing instead of some hideous Touch-Taekwondo-with-your-hands.
No. People nowadays are easily distracted hence a 15 round fight is too long especially since if it's boring. They will just go watch something more exciting and it's a money losing gamble.
I can see that. Imagine Mike Tyson/Bonecrusher Smith going 15 rounds!..... 12 rounds was worse than getting teeth pulled. At the same time, there have been legendary fights with 15 rounds being the limit. Boxing made its name off of the spectacular 15 rounders in its history. Do you get the same drama of an Ali/Frazier in just 12 rounds? I don't think it's a coincidence that their most average match was a 12 rounder. Does Rocky Marciano win the title against Walcott? Would Billy Conn have been heavyweight champ? we know boxing because of 15 rounders.
Inconclusive superfights must have increased fivefold since the championship rounds were taken away. So many unanswered questions. I'd have sat through an extra 3 rounds of every John Ruiz title fight to have good answers to them.
I bet most casual fans would, too. A stinker gets remembered as a stinker whether it lasts 12 or 15, but an inconclusive fight vs a CONCLUSIVE, satisfying answer like Leonard-Hearns, Pryor-Arguello makes all the difference in making people come back to the sport versus, say, EVERY unsatisfying major DLH fight, Hopkins-Taylor, etc. Morales-Barrera was great - imagine what would have happened over another 3 rounds? You'd make a million fans for life.
The list goes on. The sky would be bluer, birds would chirp a sweeter melody, the paving stones would shimmer a beguiling illume, boys and girls would tumble through the streets as moving jewels.
THIS... Measures will B Taken to Make Boxing "Safer", ie., REDUCING Rounds Even Fuuuuurther, Before Rounds R ADDED...These Days, 15 Rounds Seems Almost BARBARIC to the Decision Makers...But as Others (Hut in Particular) Pointed Out, we've Got Faaaaaaaaaaaaaar More INCONCLUSIVE Endings to Fights, Minus the 3 Extra Rounds... REED:Lok:
How ironic is it that way back in the day, when America was so-called "Innocent"; some chicks actually stayed with the guys they married, let alone having children with just one guy; mom's apple pie; I love Lucy; The Honeymooners; Leave it to Beaver, yada, yada, yada..... And boxing was 15 rounds and not looked at as strictly a barbaric sport. Now, the moral fiber of all things is at an all time low; we have 30 year old grandma's, etc.... Now 15 rounds is too much to bare and out of the question! :wack:
BRILLIANT article, BTW. I've been wanting to find an article like that for about 5 years, 300 thank yous for posting. Bookmarked.
Yes. It sort of matters which rounds ring deaths occurred in, but it matters more that we are in a relatively long stretch of time without any usa-televised ring deaths. I would say that a 15 round title fight could happen relatively easy under today's circumstances. You only need one of the big 4 to crack and approve it on a special basis. That won't be the WBC so you have 3 that I think could do it. It won't be the IBF because of their USA base. That leaves the WBO and the WBA so you have 2. I could see either of them bending their rules to permit it. Hell, the WBA already does 11 round fights. What it would likely require is a non-usa based ppv card...say something out of Dubai like mma has had recently...it will require a promoter with some pull to get a sanctioning body to go along with it...or it will require some really big name fighter(s) to just say fuck it and do it with or without a sanctioning body's approval. Maybe this could happen on Native American soil, but I think they are not autonomous enough to do it? Anyone know if one of the casinos could do it on a reservation? Anyway, the point is that it certainly could happen and I think it is rather likely that it will happen. Even though I described one situation where it makes usa financial $ense; don't forget that some country like Russia or China could just say fuckit and do a 15 rounder because they want to.
