Toney would never catch Spinks cleanly. Spinks runs and pitty-pats his way to a boring, ugly but clear decision
I liked James Toney, talentwise, he was a rare, even unique fighter. But..........James Toney weighed 160lbs for precisely 3 minutes of his life.
Two of the Toney's best career performances came at 160 - Nunn, and the first McCallum fight (which he really won). Both Nunn and McCallum were several light years better than Stinks.
He lost every damn minute of that Nunn fight and in reality, Nunn lost it more than Toney won it. Nunn was such a dumb fuck, inside and outside. I was merely alluding to how James making 160 would play a very big role in the fight. If Stinks moved all night I can see James having issues. Sure, Nunn was light years ahead of Stinks, ditto McCallum, could not agree more. But Stinks could run and James, eating lettuce and taking shots so he could piss properly the night before the Jones fight {at 168} might just get tired and really disinterested. It's not the case that Stinks goes in there and does something magic. It's just that Toney burns out fast with the weight issues and Stinks "style component".
Toney in 91 when he beat Nunn wasn't having weight issues at 160 (yet). Re-watch that fight. Toney was a lot quicker and more athletic at that point than I think you realize. He looked slow in much of that fight because Nunn was faster and more athletic, but still, Toney FAR too quick and athletic for a guy as mediocre as Spinks to have more success against him. BTW, how was Nunn a dumbfuck inside the ring? Outside the ring, yeah he became a fuck up. But inside the ring he was a HIGHLY intelligent and talented technician. Toney breaking him down to the body had a lot to do with setting up that infamous left hook which took Nunn out.
