Neither would do any serious damage as nearly all punches seen would be blocked, but I think Wright's jab might win him the fight
:eeeek: I wouldn't have expected ANYONE to pick Wright over Toney at 160lbs. Decent matchup btw..never seen if before. Toney by decision...8 rounds to 4.
I think Toney gets a little bit overrated now as a middleweight. People tend to think that since he was almost impossible to hit cleanly at 190 or at heavyweight and at 160 his power was very good so as a result he would be almost unbeatable. But what is forgotten is that at middleweight Toney got hit much more when the punches were faster and he couldn't see them coming. That's why I see Wright giving him plenty of trouble with his jab, but I can' really argue if anyone picks Toney in a close fight either
toney lost to a far lesser talented fighter in dave tiberi. he also beat reggie johnson by a skin of teeth. i'd pick toney at his best to beat winky, but at the same time, winky can beat him on an off night.
Toney beats him CONVINCINGLY! Winky's face would be busted up as hell after James is through with him.
you guys act as if toney was some sort of a dominant force at 160. what good/great middleweight has he dominated? sosa? no. nunn? no. mccallum? no. tiberi? NO. reggie johnson? no. you're telling me that it's out of a realm to say that wright would be competitive against a guy who should've lost to dave freaking tiberi. toney's a great figther, but he was never consistent. if anything, wright has shown consistency throughout his career.
who the hell is Wright at 160? :dunno: no one is picking toney by domination or anything Toney is a close but clear fight is a fair call ________ Honda XLV750R history
a guy that should've been awarded w/ the middleweight championship. who the fuck is dave tiberi? a guy who should've gotten toney's belt.
not quite the same as... ... is it? I have no problem with anyone who insists it's Toney in a close but clear one. But claiming one guy ain't shit and predicting a 9-3 outcome is anything but "close but clear." Joony and UGBK are both dead-on with their assessments. What would kill Wright in the end would be his inability to close the deal, whereas Toney would find a way to pull it out. IMO, that would be the difference in this fight. I see it being even heading down the stretch, with Toney doing enough in the championship rounds to barely squeak by in a decision Wright is certain to bitch about at night's end.
Why do you boys cream yourselves over Toney so much. He was good, but nowhere near untouchable. Winky would give him one hell of a fight, but possibly not be able to close the deal. Toney by narrow decision.
I would take Toney. Just a better fighter. Winky came on more at 160, versus the version who had tough fights with Vargas and Harry Simon. But his two biggest wins came against two guys who were past their prime weights. Toney was another level.
Toney by decision Much is often made about Toney’s inconsistency at middleweight. There is some truth to it but I think it’s often overblown. It’s mainly just one performance, although it was awful. Toney was losing by a lot on the cards when he beat Nunn, but Nunn was a really good undefeated fighter (ranked #3 p4p at the end of 90’ by The Ring). Nunn would probably give a competitive fight with just about any MW in history, and the fight was closer anyway than the official cards. Nunn was just ahead by wide margins because the fight was in Iowa. 7 weeks later he fought Reggie Johnson, who dropped and hurt him, but I thought the decision was fair. The first fight with Mike McCallum was one of Toney’s best performances to me. Both of them fought great and were very sharp. I felt Mike was fortunate to get a draw. Less than 2 months later was the Dave Tiberi fight, and Toney was terrible. A couple months later was Glenn Wolfe, which was more workmanlike. Toney fought alright I guess. Then the McCallum rematch, which I scored slightly for Mike. Toney didn’t fight poorly, although he was better the first time around. He just fought on even terms with another great fighter. Toney was fighting very often and had one terrible off-night. I think he lands enough shots to win 8 rounds over Wright
It would be a brilliant fight in the pocket if you take a young 160 toney vs juiced up Wright who fought mosley and Trinidad
