For my money, Liston can count himself as being in the elite category, as far as his chances againat a prime Louis go. He joins Ali & Foreman with the best shot to score the win.
Yep. I've come around to your way of thinking that Max Schmelling really was all that and then some, and that it is perfectly reasonable to assume that Conn was just the most prodigious 6' 170lbr in the history of all mankind. Oh and Galento was tough, gotta remember that, tough. Liston kicks fuck out of Joe Louis every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Its unlikely Louis was any faster than Patterson or any tougher.
Different proposition. Him and Gunboat Smith. Those were the days. Tough I tell you. Tough. All the muscle tone of a plum, all the reach of a thalidomide- but tough. You just can imagine it, born to a mother with as much calcium in her system as a gallon o' petrol, raised on vegetables and grass, bald as an egg by the age of twenty- but tough- so tough in fact that they had the Great Joe Louis on his as or out cold. Now, that ain't a knock against Lewis, its a knock against todays fighters.:Thumbs:
If we're talking pre-prime losses, Schmeling > Purritty/Brewster/Sanders. Take your pick on any of the three. Better to be run close by Billy Conn than Sam Peter ( :: :: :: ), I think even yourself & Mr. TLC would agree.
Louis... quicker hands, more fortitude... Liston would hurt him early but I like Louis to either stop Liston late or sweep the last few rounds and win a clear cut decision and comparing Joe Louis to Floyd Patterson the way Irish did is one of the most idiotic things I have ever seen
What eats away at Irish is that Vitali Klitschko --- to his judgement, the best of the two brothers --- had one fight against a great opponent & lost. That's understandable, it'd hurt anyone. Irish is well aware no further great opposition will ever cross big brother's path, so while he will never be able to distinguish himself as an all-time great fighter (being that he isn't one), at least Irish can take comfort in the fact that he is free to use Klitschko's domination against a wasteland of obese, under-trained quitters as free-reign to claim he could beat anyone, safe in the knowledge he can hide behind Klitschko's KO ratio & win-loss record --- as though any of the greats (& some lesser Champions, for that matter) wouldn't have a similar resume, faced with such garbage. Irish, since Liston, "kicks fuck," out of Louis, how does he do against the brothers? Those pillars of modern powerhouse Boxing --- one who throws arm punches whilst calling himself a professional fighter, & the other who clutches like an octopus & sports the chin of a 12-year-old. Big muscles, though...with reach (though no advantage here against Liston). & they are tall, I tell you. Really tall ::
Well the Klitschkos may be dominating HW, but I agree..against who? Now, if they had wins over the likes of Fireman Jim Flynn, Bearcat Wright, Chihuahua Kid Brown, Rough House Ware, Jamaica Kid, Black Fitzsimmons, Pocahontas Jennings and the legendary Klondike, whom was so renowned that years later an Ice cream sandwich was made in his honour, well they'd damn near almost HAVE to be mentioned in a top 5 all time p4p great list.
I never compared them except in terms of speed and chin, which are basically 2 of many many aspects which make up a fighter. Both men were fast, especially with the hands, Patterson had better feet and was more of a natural mover. Both men had difficulties with the right hand, and could be, and were, stopped and dropped in their respective primes. That, brother, is as far as I took any comparison. For Liston, one word- JAB. Tommy Farr took Louis the distance showing a good jab. Liston had a great jab and great reach, so its easy to see him get into the fight sooner. Ask anyone- get that jab off, and the right hand wont be far behind it. Louis fought some big punchers and some light punchers, lots of them buzzed him- the man was down multiple times in his career {two versus Walcott, once versus Marciano, once versus Galento, twice versus Buddy Baer, once again by Schmelling in their first fight...}
I mean, you can be as upset about as you want. The glib ease with which Joe Louis beats Liston is just perplexing. Perplexing. Joe Louis beats everyone. You know why? Cos he be retro.:Thumbs:
Firstly, no one --- no one --- has stated Liston is an easy match for Louis. The only one talking in absolutes regarding the fight is you. "Retro," has nothing to do with it. No one lauds fighters who threw arm punches, beat a long list of nobodies, & lost against their only credible rival in the 20's as legends today, & no one's lauding Vitali Klitschko as one of the legends tomorrow. BTW, regarding Joe Louis, "beating everybody," someone has to be the favourite against the rest. Take your pick between Ali & Louis --- regrettably, both are American. You, apparently, care not to deal with that fact. Your choice.
You tell him! Railroad Workin' O'Leary was TOUGH. As was Dixie Kid and Smiling Kid Nolan. And don't even get me started on Fireman Jim Flynn.
Go ahead & say aloud that Jack Dempsey, "fought nobodies." I can't wait to hear the final confirmation.
He fought no or nearly brothers. The brothers, the brothers, aiiiight? Significant mark against his name, IMO.
Louis makes Liston quit like the bitch he was. Liston was a frontrunner. Louis might get hurt early...........but once he hurt Sonny back that would be the beginning of the end.
What made you think I was being sarcastic? Fireman Jim Flynn and Big Jack Hickey were obviously incredible fighters. Different class than the likes of Sam Peter, Eddie Chambers and such.
