I was in a great mood today until i came across this piece of sad news :crying: I guess we still will have the memories....
Well, since Ingemar Johanson is there, there is a strong chance that Ruiz will be too one day. I hope they make a statue of him where you can take pictures of yourself getting clinched by Ruiz
Say it isn't so! Woo hoo!! Really?? That's the best news I've heard all day. This is the best thing Ruiz has ever done for boxing.
I'm sorry, but of all the reasons for a fighrer to be added to the HOF, that is the worst. ugh. "If so and so made it..."
ruiz was certainly an overacheiver. if you look at his career from his amateurs days, i think he's had a pretty good career. plus, looking at his resume, he certainly didn't duck anyone. with an exception of lewis, byrd, tyson, and the klitschko bros, he's virtually fought everyone from the top 15 and did fairly well. i dont think he'll be remembered merely as the guy who lost to roy jones.
Probably not by all. I think Ruiz is the kind of fighter that will be remembered how individuals want to remember him. Many loathe him, others give him credit for being an overderachiver etc. I guess my point is that if there was a documentary about Ruiz 20 years from now, nobody who lived through his "era" would look back thinking about him differently after watching it.
Best of luck, John. I hope you can be a promoter and put New England (home of Rocky Marciano and Marvelous Marvin Hagler) back on the boxing radar. Karl
I'm not sure why either. I shudder at the thought of Ruiz grooming a new generation of hug and hold fighters. "Jab, smab...if you're jabbing you're too far away to hold!"
Brutal comments. :: Idk, I think he's in the discussion for HOF, especially considering he was the 1st.
Great news, I was worried he would continue fighting after the Haye fight where it was obvious his skills and explosivness had left him. His punches lost their crispness and his power is gone too. Even the few times he landed his right hand sneaker on Haye it had no effect and Haye is hardly iron chinned. The only thing that remains is his huge heart and he showed it big time , he never stopped trying and was even pissed that Diaz mercifully threw in the towel. Maybe he could still compete with the lower top 10 but he's already rich and he still got his brains, he should from now on just enjoy life with his family and become fat as a pig. You made us proud throughout your career champ.
The first what? So-called heavyweight "champion" to be easily handled by two former middleweight champs?
I'm sorry, but I don't support the reasoning either. I just pointed out that Ruiz might actually make it even though he obviously does not deserve it
all things considered, ruiz was quite the strategist. his talent was limited and he somehow managed to win fights and earn decent paydays. sure he bent the rules and was awful to watch, but his hit and hold tactics along w/ his ability to fake shots to the balls got him some good money, especially in title fights. hey, it took lennox two tries to beat that rahman. it only took ruiz one. he also prevented the second most boring guy in oquendo from winning a title! to this day, oquendo only has two legitimate loses.
Exactly. In all seriousness, John Ruiz made a tremendous career considering the lack of physical talent he had. Results don't lie and Ruiz has more good victories than most fighters of his generation. Of course he is nowhere near HOF caliber or anything like that but his results and his tactical skill deserve to be recognized
Is Freddie Roach grooming his fighters to go out and get punched in the face repeatedly? No. I have a feeling that if Ruiz was to coach a guy who had superior talent to himself he could do very well in bringing him through. Some of the best trainers around weren't the best fighters themselves.
Yeah, so he must be better than Lewis! :: It's funny to see some folks trying so hard to be contrarians and spin Ruiz's career into something not so bad. ugh. Boxing is so much better today than it was just a few days ago.
:: at you trying to be sarcastic by repeating I'm sorry. And what's worse than the HOF electing non-deserving fighters is the attitude of some fans think that is perfectly ok. And what's even worse than that is the folks who try to build cases for undeserving fighters like Ruiz or Gatti.
arturo gatti may make the hall of fame. a lot of those east coast writers who vote love the dude. and gatti is plenty famous
Ruiz was in one of the greatest slugfests of all-time. Of course, it was only 19 seconds, but there were BOMBS landed.
