He comes to battle dressed like a cowboy. A troublemaker since childhood, his friend called him “The Menaceâ€￾. But what Jorge Arce would love the most is to come to the ring wearing a title belt and to once again be called “The Champâ€￾. He has been fighting for 11 years as a professional and on December 1, he’ll step back into the ring to take on Medgoen Singsurat of Thailand. But for Jorge it’s been a long journey.

Arce turned professional at the age of 16. He is a two-time light flyweight world champion; he won the WBO light flyweight world title at the age of 19 in 1998, and won the WBC light flyweight world title at 23 in 2002. He made four successful defenses of the WBC title in 2004, and won the WBC's award for "The Most Active Champion in 2004." He vacated the WBC light flyweight world title to move up to the flyweight division, and won the WBC interim flyweight world title in July, 2005. Arce knows what it’s like to be a champion, but after a wide unanimous decision loss to Christian Mijares, some experts started to question his desire to stay in the sport.

FightBeat caught up with the former champion to get a few words about his career, his preparation for his upcoming bout, and a chance to answer his critics.

 I think Donaire would beat Arce....he's better-served going after Darch.

Plus, can Arce even make 112 anymore? I guess he could try pulling Donaire back up to 115, which is doable.

    Peace.

IMO, if Arce can't make 112 anymore he is just about done. He's big there, his power is decent there. If he goes up, he's just another slightly above average brawler. Especially if he goes up to 118 or higher.

Donaire beats and does it soundly.:nono:

I wouldn't be surprised if he goes down from 115lbs to fight Donaire for a big money fight.

I would. I can't possibly see him making 112. If Arce-Vic was ever going to happen, the plan was for Vic to come up and fight at 115. I would think the same would be said of Nonito.

All that said, nice interview, and Arce is still a very likeable guy. His competition left a lot to be desired for quite a while, but for the most part, he's basically the anti-Vic.

and you keep saying "Coming down from 115." He's at bantamweight now. Hell as it is, if a Arce-Martin Castillo fight happens next year (which I believe is the plan), it will be Castillo moving up to bantamweight. An Arce-Donaire fight would either be Nonito moving all the way up to bantie (a whole 6 lb. ), or them meeting at 115 or some other catchweight.

    Arce's done as a flyweight.

Arce's far more likeable. Didn't mean talent-wise, more so their persona outside of the ring. But also in the way they fight - at least ever since Vic adopted the crab-walk and started fighting as if all he needed was one punch to knock your out.

Yup...I will admit Vic's style and in-the-ring antics (and out of it too) are irritating.

And he didn't use to annoy me as much before.

Jeez, thats somewhat harsh. He's more likeable because he dresses up like a cowboy and talks out of his ass? Come on. Vic struggles to speak English, in a country where if you don't do that, you're an outcast. He comes from a place where trash talking isn't "cool" and make shis bones mostly with his fists.

And one can turn their boxing style both ways. Arce used to be a more appealing fighter when he had skills, IMO. He's nothing more than walk in and wing these days. But I guess thats an individual thing. There's hardly more skills on display there in my eyes.

They both fight ugly at times, bro.

But Arce's still got more of a punch repertoire nowadays and still goes to the body.

With Vic, you get the sense that you could rip his right arm out of its socket - and he'd still fight exactly the same way and wouldn't realize it was gone.

And Vic DOES talk trash....plenty of it.

I didn't say Arce was more skilled, just that Vic adopting the crab walk thing was a bit strange. In all actuality, he probably is the better fighter today.

Plenty of people struggle to speak English, but don't always come across as bitter as a result. Vic does. That's all I was really getting at.

Tell you what. Next thread where an Aussie (transplanted or otherwise) appears, I promise to be on my best behavior. I don't like where these past few conversations are taking us :slap:

Of course he trash talks, whta I'm saying, is that its entirely forced upon him. He's HAD to talk stupid shit, just to get his name in the press and out there in the states. It worked as thats the time he got onto Showtime and started securing fights.

Arce is still the same guy who said he had no idea who Vic was...while sucking on a lollipop and hyping a fight with Rosendo Alvarez.

I think the way Darch fights kicks ass.

And before the Donaire ass-kicking, I would rather have my fighter fight Donaire over Darch.

Now? Well, Darch got the all-important comeback win out of the way, but I don't know if he's as good as he was.

I hear what you're saying... but it's his relationship with Shaw that got him on Shawt... er, Showtime. The trash-talking came when Shaw was angling for an Arce-Darchinyan bout. I guess you can blame it on Shaw for not knowing how to market him.
