Here's an interview with Julian Jackson. In it, he says how he wanted to fight a young Roy Jones but Roy's people did not want it. I think Roy would have beaten Jackson later in his career with just reflexes alone; however, how do you guys think a Jackson/Jones fight would have gone around the time he kayoed Jorge Vaca, which was his first signature win early on? http://www.boxinginsider.com/headlines/keeping-up-with-julian-jackson/
"Yeah, well, Jackian Julesons and his manager sound like two talking about what who they don't know hell cats about".
For the 1st Several Years of his Career, Roy Jones SR. Called All of the Shots, which was Attached to the Laundry List of Reasons WHY Roy JR. Left him...It's Very Possible that a Fight w/Julian Jackson was Offered & Roy SR. Bypassed... "However", by the Time Roy Got Into the Title Picture @160-168, Jackson was in the Process of LOSING to the Likes of Gerald McClellan & Quincy Taylor...Roy "Ducking" Jackson SOUNDS Good & Of Course Roy Jones' Resident Naysayers R CLUTCHING to it like a Rat on Cheese, but the FACT is, Roy & Julian Jackson were on OPPOSITE Ends of the Boxing Spectrum... When Jackson was a PLAYER in the 154-160 Mix, Roy was in the PROSPECT Phase of his Career...On the Flip Side, by the time Roy Entered that Mix, Jackson was ALREADY LOSING High Profile Fights by KO... Next!!... REED:hammert:
But REED, what about the Roy that knocked out Jorge Vaca in '92? The talent was there, the power was there, but he was still gaining experience. Do you think it was enough experience to handle Jackson, or would it have been his immense talent? Thomas Tate and Gerald McClellan were the benchmark names at that time on Jackson's record; so, not exactly the beginning of his slide.
It Would've Been an INTERESTING Fight for Sure...Roy Could've Beaten Jackson in a Number of Ways OR Jackson Could've Very Well BANGED him Out...Hard to Tell... The Thing is, Vaca was Roy's 16th Fight...By that Same Time, Julian Jackson was in his 43rd or 44th Fight, w/Only 1 Loss...Can U REALLY Accuse a Prospect of "Ducking" a Guy w/Nearly 30 MORE Fights???... REED:Lok:
:giggle: I mean, I hated Roy Jones, hated his style, hated his attitude, the way he taunted horrible fighters he was beating up... but the guy was a special fighter and I think you need more than what a Middleweight Julian Jackson brought to the table

Yep. RJJ has a pretty impressive resume of benefits of the doubt. Besides, didn't RJJ beat at least one fighter who beat Jackson? That's good enough for me.
UNlike Julian Jackson, McCallum Actually Kept Himself SOMEWHAT Relevant, by the Time Roy Faced him... REED:mj:
Julian Jackson was also under contract to Don King, and Roy would have had to sign a contract with King to face him. King had everyone under contract except for Hopkins, Roy, and Toney. I think McCallum was also not under contract with King, but I'm not sure. I know Mercado, McClellan, Benn, Eubank, Norris, and Jackson were. Does nobody remember King's middleweight tournament from the '90s? Hopkins was managed by Butch Lewis, and Jones was represented by Murad Muhammad, I think. Neither wanted to sign a long-term promo deal with King.
Humph. Logic has nothing to do with it!!! Around here, we use INVECTIVE!! "ROY WAS FRAID OF HIM!!!! HEAR YE HEAR YE!!!" :scared::scared:
Yes. Pointing out that McCallum's old age didn't prevent RJJ from fighting him, whereas REEd suggests RJJ didn't fight Jackson because he was past it. It's a fair point by reed that mccallum remained somewhat relevant wheras jackson did not. But if you honestly think I "forgot" that RJJ fought McCallum, well I'd be surprised, and would've thought you knew me better than that.
I don't blame a young and green Jones for ducking a Julian Jackson. A fighter with Jackson's power isn't a smart fight for any up and coming fighter. A prime Jones vs Jackson though would have been a hellacious mismatch in jones' favour. Jackson may have been killed.
rumor had it that when jackson approached roy sr about a potential fight, roy sr responded something along the lines of 'i dont want my son to get hurt'. that was in the early 90s supposedly. i think jones would've fucked him up badly.
Yup, was about to say that the story is believable if the convo took place around '91/'92. To paraphrase Morgan Freeman/Million Dollar Baby, Roy Sr. protected his son right out of an NBC contract.
