How many times will Diego spit out his mouth piece in this one?? As hard as Corrales hits I can't see him even making a dent in Chavez and he'd piss blood for days after the bodyshots Chavez gets him with. Chavez TKO 6
Few fighters would match Chavez when he was at 130 or 135, a true beast. Corrales is not among them. Chavez TKO9.
The ones who could stand in there with Julio are Duran, Mayweather, Whitaker, and I've heard alot about Benny Leonard but have not seen him. I'm sure there are some others but those are names off the top of my head.
There would not be many (though all of your selections are worthy candidates). Do not forget Armstrong! 135, to me, is THE single most loaded division for legends of all the weightclasses, so there would be maybe a dozen names, but that's not many for how steep it is historically. I can think of substantially fewer at 130.
True of both. One fight I'd have always liked to have seen was prime Chavez (early-140) vs. the De La Hoya of 140lbs (possibly De La Hoya's peak weight). Forward-forcing, body-punching extraordinaire, with a stylistic & size disadvantage, against a bigger, faster, more versatile & harder-punching fighter, but with lesser attributes of chin, stamina, & work-rate. Very interesting fight. In years past, I've sided with Chavez in that one. Lately, I've thought it's close to a toss-up.
I still lean towards prime Chavez over Oscar but it would a great fight. I think Oscar's speed early would give Chavez trouble, but Julio was a smart guy. He knew how to make adjustments and his bodypunching and stamina would carry the day I think. I think he'd win a close decision over De La Hoya. What about Chavez vs Arguello?
Another classic I could go back & forth on. A tall, rangy guy like Arguello is every inch the double-sided coin against a fighter like Chavez --- do you favour Arguello's height & range, coupled with his pin-point precision & monster punch, to bust Chavez up...OR does Chavez sweep in low under the jab, & find a nice lean, long torso to tear into with one of the greatest body attacks ever? I love the question of that fight...& I think I fancy Arguello to do just enough to hang on for a decision. Chavez's face would be pizza & Arguello would be too weak to raise his hand in victory...or maybe that's just my creative juices painting a classically close fight, because it's so hard to predict.
^^^In Chavez's prime, he didn't cut that much. Alot of it was because he had good defense but he also seemed to have tough skin. I'm not sure Arguello would butcher him. I could see him winning a close decision possibly, but I could also see Julio breaking him down late down the stretch. Great fight.
Yeah. It's difficult for me to imagine how Chavez might react to Arguello's power. It was a monster punch, very accurate to boot, going up against a guy with a slab of granite for a jaw. I'm in the minority on this one, but I've always thought Chavez would've beaten Sanchez at 130.
I would actually favor Chavez over Sanchez too at 130. A Julio at his BEST that is. IMO the greatest Mexican fighter of all time.
^^^Its definitely close either way. What about Chavez vs Esteban De Jesus?? That would be quite interesting.
