According to MaxBoxingScene, "a deal is in the works" for Michael Katsidis to return agains Jesus Chavez and Joel Casamayor to defend against Juan Diaz.

The date they're looking at is September 13 in Houston.

As long as Diaz fights Campbell after he has beaten Casamayor, it´s all good.

Well, it does matter when the win(s) actually take place.

To be fair to Santa Cruz, he was easily outpointing Diaz until he came a cropper.

Doug Fischer had an interesting article not too long ago about what went on between his camp (primarily his manager) and GBP.

Supposedly, HBO and Showtime weren't interested in a re with Casamayor but he was reportedly offered the fight with Katsidis and his manager turned it down.

He's now supposed to fight a WBC title eliminator against Antonio Pitalua.

doug and kim love working as their local mexi-cali fighters' unofficial publicists.

didnt santa cruz also lose to some journeyman spoiler a few fights before losing to diaz?

just because cruz has one significant win (officially a loss) doesnt necessarily mean that he deserves a shot nor the money. what else has he done? on top of that, he's not even fun to watch.

I agree about the publicists comment, but he quotes Rudy Hernandez and Eric Gomez at length in the piece.

I didn't watch it, but from the reports at teh time Trejo loss followed a similar pattern of the Diaz fight, he was up big and was knocked out late. I guess it was extremely hot in the Houston venue they were fighting and he simply fatigued badly and was stopped.

what was his excuse for getting stopped by the moderate punching david diaz?

perhaps he just isnt very good?

It wasn't his excuse, that's what was written in the reports at the time. (Karl Hegman's description, since it was the easies to find: "The temperature inside the D & I Colonial Ballroom was 95 humid Texas Gulf Coast degrees and inside the ring under the hot lights, it was over a hundred.")

I'm not making the case he's that good, or that his manager should have turned down the Katsidis fight.

Regardless of either, though, I haven't seen one person who actually thought Casamayor beat him.

he also doesn't have Katsidis' chin which will be much more important in this fight.

You guys are ripping on Santa Cruz yeah, I can see why and I'm not trying to make him out to be a consistent world class opponent. The part about it that sucks,is that this guy may have lost out on his ONE chance to get paid well.

This is going to be a fun one to watch to be sure!
There may be no bigger fan or admirer or Joel's than myself here on fightbeat as I have followed his career with admiration since he was the amateur world champion in the 80's.
But; I think youth will be served here as I am going with Diaz to outhustle the Cuban Great to a wide points win.
The fight will take place on Mexican Independence Day as well, should make for an awesome boxing weekend!
Houston will be rocking and rolling, that's for sure!
