Difficult to tell how much the 10+ lbs size advantage that Pavlik had would affect the fight, but it must be assumed that Lamotta wins because he could hurt Pavlik more than vice versa

    Always about "weight".

I don't see any weight advantage for Pavlik. LaMotta was a big middle who struggled to make the weight at 160 and fought a lot of his non championship fights over 160. LaMotta would have been an ideal fighter for the 168 lb division if it existed when he was fighting.

Just pointing out the often forgotten fact (in MMs) that modern middleweights are bigger than past ones, since the art of weight dropping and gaining has improved a lot. And yes, if a fighter holds a considerable advantage in "weight", that has a meaning, since there are "weight" classes for a reason. As I said, I don't think "weight" would make a difference here though

Kelly Pavlik can't win a mythical matchup against any historical middleweight champion.

A shotgun wouldn't make a difference for Pavlik, here. The way he stands straight up, ribs exposed, & neglects range for activity plays straight to LaMotta's bullying strengths. He'd never make it to the final bell.

Lamotta may have been a scumbag, but he was a great fighter, very crafty, strong as hell, incredible chin and he was far more proven than Kelly fucking Pavlik

    Lamotta UD.

Pavlik would at least have some moments. This isn't a 12-0 fight.

yawn. Your sarcasm is pointless. You seem to nearly always have to mention weight, even in a case like this where it doesn't even slightly matter.

Again...LaMotta was a big middle who had a lot of trouble getting down to 160 and would have probably been better suited for 168 if it existed at that time. I don't see any weight advantage for Pavlik if they both weigh in at the same time, whether it be the day before or the day of. This idea of Middleweights being "bigger" because they get to weigh in a day earlier doesn't make any sense to me. If both fighters weigh in at the same time, then both can blow up and add extra pounds by the time the fight starts. When I consider a MM, I assume they are fighting according to the same rules, whether it is 12 rounds or 15 rounds or same day weigh in or day before weigh-in.

In any event, LaMotta wins by a lot, regardless of what Pavlik weighs.

Yes but Pavlik has a dependable chin, not concrete, but dependable. He also has decent stamina at his best. Combine this with the fact that Lamotta wasn't a huge puncher and Pavlik has decent enough power to keep the shorter man honest....and it goes the distance IMO.

LaMotta had difficulties making weight because he "ate and drank like a fucking animal".

He made 155 for Tony Janiro.

    Because he isn't very good.

I'm not saying that because I dislike him, because I don't. I actually think he seems like an okay guy and he's a decent champion. But he ruled a division which had not a single credible challenger bar the bloke he beat and the Armenian bloke he didn't want to fight and who moved to 168.

Even if you go back a 'mere' twenty years, Pavlik wouldn't even have been a contender, let alone a unified champion. The division has gone from having Nunn, Benn, Toney, RJJ, Jackson, McClellan, Kalambay, Eubanks, Watson, McCallum, Barkley et al (and I've probably missed a few there) to having Taylor, Abraham and Edison fucking Miranda.

That is why Pavlik did as well as he has done.

Abraham has at least suggested an ability to paddle, if not swim, in waters slightly deeper than the current talent pool of 160. I dont think the division should be defined by Abraham, but I dont think Abraham deserves to be defined by guys at 160 who didn't want to fight him either.

I think scaring the shit out of Frock, stopping Taylor and Miranda at 166/168 and coming on strong vs Dirrell {for what it was worth} suggest that there might just be a bit more to Abraham than the stench of Felix Sturm and Kelly Pavlik.

That said, I agree with much of what you said on Pavlik. A one-trick Pony.

    EXACTLY

Why dont these people who crow about how boxing is doing wonderfully and the fighters are as good as ever simply do a comparison of divisional top ten ratings between 2010 and 2000, never mind 1990? the difference is staggering in almost all of the divisions

Well, they try to do this, but they start at heavyweight and have such a good time with the first page that they forget to check out the later chapters, if you know whatz I meanz.
