The Force is strong with this one.

Kevin Hart’s & Ice Cube sequel Ride Along 2 put an end to the four weeks reign of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, also beating Oscar’s darling Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant and will claim the top spot at the North America box office during the long MLK weekend with an estimated $38 million. That is a little bit lower than its predecessor 2014‘s ‘Ride Along’ which opened to $41.5 million in just three days, had a lower budget of $25 million (this one has a reported $40 million budget) and ended its worldwide run with $154 million. While this sequel might not repeat the original numbers, this critics proof franchise can boast that it beat both Star Wars and Best Picture/Actor favorite DiCaprio on its opening. That gives it some street cred among its targeted demographic (young urban). RESPECT!
In the second place, and benefitting enormously from both its Golden Globes win and the 12 Academy Awards nominations, The Revenant maintained a strong hold on the ticket buyers with and estimated $37 million gross. Those are great numbers as it only droped $2 million from last week. The Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu remake has now grossed $67 million domestically. After it wins the Oscars and Leo holds the golden statue in his hands it will surely add more bucks to its coffer.

Crashing to the third spot, the All Time domestic box office king, Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally is slowing down both in the homefront and internationally. Taking just‘a mere $32 million’ it raised its domestic numbers to $850 million. With newer films coming up in the next few weeks, the Disney/Lucasfilm space saga will continue fading and will fail to reach the domestic $1 billion mark...unless Disney pulls the same gimmick that Fox did with ‘Avatar’ by adding deleted scenes and releasing it again later the same year as ‘Special Edition’ and adding more millions to its total. ‘The Force’ is the fastest film to break box office records and also the fastest to lose the #1 spot ( only 4 weeks versus ‘Avatar’ 7 weeks and ‘Titanic’ out-of-this-world 15 weeks as #1!). In China the film just lost the top spot on its second week against a local animated children’s sequel Boonie Bears III. Star Wars has grossed only $81 million in China so far. Compare that with the $245.9 million Furious 7 had grossed at that same time period for a five weeks run total of $390.9 million. Star Wars will hardly gross a little over $100 million in China by the end of its five weeks allowed run.

Debuting in the fourth spot is Michael Bay’s 13 Hours which took a disappointing $18 million.
In the fifth place Daddy’s Home added $10 million to its now total $129 million.
