Povetkin's Manager: Klitschko Accepted WADA Drug Tests

    By Ruslan Chikov

Vladimir Hryunov, manager of the mandatory challenger for IBF heavyweight Alexander Povetkin, spoke with Russian reporter Alexander Pavlov about the upcoming fight against WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko on September 11 in Frankfurt, Germany.

Hryunov was not pleased with Klitschko's actions at the recent press conference in Frankfurt. Povetkin suffered a sinus infection and was unable to fly to Germany for the conference. Klitschko took a life-like cardboard image of Povetkin and painted black eyes with a marker and made several jokes for the crowd. Povetkin is training in America with Teddy Atlas. He said the contracts have yet to be signed, but he was very pleased that Klitschko agreed to take part in the WADA doping tests.

"We didn't want to Sasha to go to this press conference. He went for four weeks to America, and he has two weeks left to complete his training there. Right now the United States is hot like Russia, and Alexander's room is very strongly air conditioned. As a result of the temperature difference, Sasha emerged with inflammation of his nasal sinuses. The doctor had not recommended for him to go on such a long journey, and we notified the IBF and provided full medical records," Hryunov said.

"Our task - I, as a manager, and Sauerland Event, as the promoter, - is to protect the interests of our boxers. A trans-Atlantic flight, especially with health problems - is a serious matter, if only because of jet lag. Moreover, the contract for the bout has not yet been signed. On the other hand, I am very grateful to Wladimir Klitschko for the fact that at the press conference, he agreed to undergo doping test under the rules of WADA [World Anti Doping Agency]. I never doubted that he was an honest man, and I am glad that he confirmed it."

Hryunov believes Klitschko's manager Bernd Boente was behind his fighter's antics at the press conference with Povetkin's cardboard image.

"This type of affectation is the style of Klitschko's manager, Bernd. I have no doubt that this is his handiwork, like the Haye shirts with the detached heads of Klitschko. Boente is a brilliant public relations manager, working for a certain audience that is willing and able to sell tickets. But I would like to draw attention to the team of Klitschko on the social responsibility of his actions - you do set an example for children," Hryunov said.

"It is better to sort things out, as an athlete, with an athlete - in the ring and not grimacing on a video on the internet. Last week during Alekseev-Lebedev, we saw how those things end.

I had a dream that Wlad won this fight but looked really really bad in it. :nono:

Same as my Wlad-Rahman dreams where Vitali was having all sorts of trouble with Rahman, and then Wlad climbed in the ring and wiped the guy out in nothing flat.

In reality, the Rahman-Vitali fight was on-off-on-off and then Wlad finally fought him.

    Anyways, Wlad deserves some credit.

    :crafty: How dare you.

He deserves credit ay?... Shouldnt you be outraged that he isn't part of the heroic charge to keep the WADA and USADA out of boxing?...

Once again, Europe leads the way.

We got the fattest piers in the fattest harbours in the world...

Also....a small part of me wonders just who is and who isn't on the gear.

Let's suppose Wlad is doping. What's he done here? Took a look at Povetkin's mush from the Chambers fight? Seen him dropped by Mora? Figured he can take a chance and get him out of there?

Of course, if there is no gear, then.....it makes no odds.

:crafty: You implied he deserves CREDIT, after siding with team Pedquiao's insistence that advanced drug testing has no place in boxing, for months and months,..therefore you should be condemning this outrageous submission by Wladimir,...........or.... did you only say 'No' previously.............all because Pacquiao said 'No' ?...:crafty: ..most did,... but in your case more likely,.. you said 'No' because Fraud said 'Yes'.... Now I dont like that prick either infact, I hate them aaaaaaaaaaaaall,... all,.. but Wlad is the kind of person who doesn't annoy me as much as 98% of the others,.. so I'm happy he lives up to somebody who is relatively sound on a morally systemic level.

Either way, there are a couple of things which need noting~:

    1. No fight has been said.

    2. Klitschko has agreed to take tests if he is forced to take tests.

My "pro-pacquaio" sentiments, if that is what you feel they were, have as much to do with a resentment I have for the likes of Golden Boy and other "egregious" sorts, whom have now been shown up for the scum that they are.

    A little different scenario....

Mayweather used tests as part of a negotiation.

K2's already won the purse bid.

    Here is the Skinny:

Teddy Atlas believes Wlad is on steroids.
    Teddy Atlas hates Wlad
He knows that Povetkin cannot beat Wlad, on those terms.
So he tries to force him off the gear, and then get the fight made.
Then he hopes that Wlad folds after around 7 or 8 rounds, before Povetkins face falls off.

Please. Have you ever heard Teddy Atlas talk about "Russians"

Teddy is 2nd in the K-Bro Hate Stakes, just behind Max Kellerman, whose family were thrown into a gorge by Tsarist authorities in 1247 AD.

You keep smearing the idea of a stronger drug testing system for boxing with these hideous creatures,..yet wont even contemplate thinking of the system based on the agency's purpose of deterring cheats who use illegal substances to win. You can spite all the right-winged business scumbags all you wish, you have good reason, but to completely extinguish a system that provides a mutually fair and level playing field simply because you hate those bastards, is quite degenerative to a cleaner sport Irishman,.. quite.

Nice to see Klitschko agree to them. That speaks well of him.

A few years ago, a friend in the States had the fortune to run across the man & pose with him for a photo & have a quick chat. He says the man is as if chiselled from stone in person --- more impressive & imposing than on-screen.

I am loathe to praise a fighter for something as utterly rudimentary as staying in-shape (once upon a time, as basic a pre-requisite for this sport as wearing gloves & owning a Gym membership), but both brothers certainly fulfill that end of their bargain.

None of this matters now as the Povetkin fight isn't happening. Wlad is now negotiating per the IBF's orders with Sam Peter, the next highest rated contender.

What the hell is going on with Povetkin? Wlad agrees to the drug testing when he didn't even have to, my guess is he called Povetkins bluff and Povetkin turned tail and ran.

If it is Peter, the scenario will play out a lot differently. I see Wlad dripping with confidence this time around and Peter ending the night on his back.

Russian TV says the fight is in danger of being called off because Povetkin has a blocked nose.

That was the excuse they had for missing the press conference. Which is valid for missing a press conference but calling off the fight? That's crazy.
