I'm not counting him out... but I think it's important to keep in mind that this is at 140 pounds. We shouldn't let Pacquaio desensitize us to weight jumping. This isn't an old Casa at lightweight, Juan Diaz, Katsidis etc... etc...
I'm still not convinced that Marquez is effective beyond 135. I like Tszyu big time in this one, wide decision or perhaps even stoppage via attrition.
I don't think Marquez is particularly effective beyond 135 either. Honestly, he looks SLIGHTLY out of his element at 135. If he were the same natural size as the guys he's been fighting at lightweight, he would have bashed them in far more one sided fashion. So obviously he's going to be fairly out of his element at 140. He doesn't have the same freakish physique that Pacquiao has, and the same freakish talent, that enables him to compete against much bigger guys. However, let's match a PRIME Marquez against Tszyu, with Marquez having a few months to bulk up to 140 as best he can. I'm taking Marquez, he's just a much better fighter. On one hand I absolutely agree with Steve, it's kind of easy to reference Pacquiao and therefore be desensitized to weight jumping, but he is one of a kind. A lot of people fail to gain the same success in just ONE division up. But when there is a gulf in ability, it negates size to some extent, like Roy Vs Ruiz etc, or even Martinez Vs Pavlik. And there is a gulf in ability between Marquez and basic, robotic Tszyu.
Tszyu is too big and too strong at 140 but I don't think he stops JMM. Marquez is a tough, durable son-of-a-botch. MTF
The size difference is nothing like Martinez and Pavlik, and the ability gulf is nothing like Jones and Ruiz. :dunno:
The difference in ability AND the difference in size is similar to Martinez Vs Pavlik. Pavlik is a big, 6'3 middleweight with power. Martinez is 5'10 and spent half his career at 147. In most of Tszyu's fights he was actually listed at 5'6, same as Hatton. Marquez is listed at 5'7. Tszyu wasn't a big 140, he's pretty average for the division. So while Tszyu is obviously a naturally bigger, heavier set man, the size difference would be no more than Martinez against Pavlik. Martinez was good enough to overcome that size difference, just like Marquez would be against a basic fighter like Tszyu.
Yeah, sorry, but the size difference between Tszyu and Marquez is much larger than Martinez and Pavlik.
No it isn't. Have you seen Martinez Vs Pavlik? Pavlik looked much bigger. Marquez is probably an inch taller than Tszyu with the same reach, and give Marquez a few months to gain some muscle, Tszyu isn't going to dwarf him. The size difference would seem far less than Martinez against Pavlik. Here is Marquez in 2004. And here is Tszyu weighing in against Hatton. Bear in mind Marquez is at LEAST as tall as Tszyu. Tszyu wasn't even a big 140 pounder. 5'6 and barrel chested, with average sized arms and shoulders. If you really think the size difference between these 2 is bigger than Martinez Vs Pavlik you need glasses.
Tszyu by KO after 6-7 rounds....Marquez hasn't defeated nobody at 135-140 to make me think otherwise..
Wow. You're kidding, right? Marquez has NEVER fought at 140. He isn't big enough. Martinez is a fairly dominant middleweight champion of the world - the weight where he beat Pavlik. Height? ::
Mex, what happened to you man? You've been blowing me away with these bizarre posts for about a week now.
Martinez is a 154 pounder and Pavlik is a huge middleweight. There is no doubt at all, none whatsoever that Marquez and Tszyu are closer to being the same size. Marquez was a big featherweight, and Tszyu is a small 140 pounder. And Steve, I don't really get your point about Martinez beating Pavlik means there is less size difference. That's like saying Roy beat Ruiz so there is probably less of a size difference there than Hatton against Floyd. It makes no sense, none at all. Martinez won because he's a MUCH better fighter. It was clear Pavlik was by far the bigger, stronger man.
Marquez is clearly the better technician, but that's been the case against everybody he's fought bar Mayweather. However Tszyu was never greatly troubled by boxers. How many purely "robotic" guys below heavyweight can say the same? Kostya was great at using timing, measurement and power. If he was given space (which Marquez would give him plenty of) he was even more effective. Guys like Katsidis and Diaz aren't in Tszyu's league in terms of ring smarts or raw power. Tszyu will be allowed to have full extension on his punches and Marqez as resiliant as he can be is not taking too many of those flush right hands and fighting back.
In the case of KT? Yes unfortunately. It's the one boxer that it appears he cannot give credit to in any fashion. Mex is a good poster but KT is like a red rag to a bull with him.
