I thought it was premature, especially with what was on the line. Leonard would have finished him off anyway though.

Hearns was out. The only idiots who think it was premature are the ones who look at the fight as a whole rather than what was happening at the time of the stoppage. Those same idiots think that if a fighter "did well" in the preceding rounds, he somehow shouldn't get stopped.

I think you have to look at the fight as a whole.I never look at what happened arounf the time of the stoppage. Hearns won the other rounds and therefore earned the right not to be stopped.

He was going down and out, anyways. I don't see what the big deal is.

I'd rather see a fight stopped five punches too early, than one too late.

Wouldn't we all? But that isn't the point now is it!! Should Corley have been stopped vs Cotto, just because we may be speculating that perhaps..there's a chance that at some point...in the fight...after that...somewhere...sometime that it'll be one punch too late?

If that's the case let's stop every fight in the first round.

    The question:

WAS THE STOPPAGE PREMATURE OR NOT?

Cotto-Corley was nothing like Leonard-Hearns. You're stupid for bringing it up.

No, your question was "Was it a good stoppage?". And yes, it was. A punch or two early? Maybe. But that alone isn't enough to not make it good.

A K.O should be judged, totally regardless of the fights circumstances. The reason a ref rules a stoppage is for the sake of the fighters safety. A guy is not more safe, when he is getting the shit beaten out of him just because he is ahead in the fight.

I spoke with Davey Pearl several times about this fight in the late 80's.
I told him "Hearns wasn't responding."
He told me.."He wasn't responding after the fight, either."
That tells you that Tommy didn't know where he was.

Hearns and Manny didn't protest the stoppage. Plus Tommy wasn't punching back, he just laid on the ropes and took punches. He should've coasted the last 5 rounds and he would've still won.

My personal favorite fight of all-time. I've probably watched more then any fight I own. The stoppage was fair. Some say maybe the ref could have let a couple more blows be landed before making the final stoppage and I never understood why? Leonard landed a big right hand that had Hearns leaning on the ropes nearly lifeless. The ref at that point probably took more notice and was waiting to see if Hearns would do anything to justify the fighting continuing, guess what Hearns didn't do jack shit. He was getting hit on the ropes and could barely defend himself. At first glance it could have been seen as premature, but looking at again it really wasn't.

I love the bit around 1:40 just before the ref jumps in to stop the fight, when Leonard connected flush, Hearns staggered back and Leonard very quickly raised both hands up in victory before then uploading a few more shots:

Is this thread a joke? Hell no the stoppage wasnt premature! Tommy was spent! Ray was all over him and wasnt going to let up. Had the fight gone longer Tommy would have ended up like Vargas did against Tito.

I always thought given the context that the stoppage was SLIGHTLY premature. Im talking 3 or 4 seconds here though

IMO, the appearance of a premature stoppage is due to referee Davey Pearl's blown knockdown calls. Leonard scores a KD, Pearl calls it a slip. Leonard misses a flurry, Hearns backs up and falls into the ropes (nearly through the ropes), Pearl calls it a knockdown. All of this showed an attacking Leonard against a weary Hearns, but there were no solid "fight ending" punches being landed at the time of the stoppage.

But, in the end, it was coming anyway. Hearns was spent and may have gotten knocked cold after another minute or so.

I think the ref should have given Hearns a little more time. Its possible he could have survived. Not likely, but possible. Considering what was on the line, I think it should have been given a bit more time but its probable that Leonard was gonna stop him anyway.
