    I have used three criteria:
    - How many boxers does the country produce relatively
    - How popular is the sport
    - How pasionate are the fans about the sport

Not a Bad List @ All, though REED would Probably Rate Cuba a Bit HIGHER....They've Absolutely DOMINATED Amatuer Boxing like NO OTHER Since PRIOR to REED Being Born AND they've Had Some Very Good Pros in the Process...

I suppose Thailand should be in there but Muay Thai and other martial arts are probably more popular than boxing. Probably same with Japan.

I know that Cuba probably produces many good boxers. I know nothing about the two other criteria though. Do the Cubans follow boxing on a massive scale? Are the fans going ballistic during fights? I could have made a better judgement if I know more about the boxing culture. Still I ranked them highly because of the sheer number of great boxers that the country produces. If Cuba wasn't communist I think the boxing culture would be similar to that of Puerto Rico. The islands are situated quite closely to eachother.

I'd put Great Britain a little higher...or a lot higher. And add Ghana and the Phillipines too.

throw that germany bullshit out of there.

they mostly get an audience these days for non-germans - klitschko, chagaev, valuev. we have british support for hatton, slappy, even goddamn amir khan.

their best boxers of recent years were the insidious duckers dariusz and snottke, whereas we had lennox lewis and naz (the latter commercially potent at least).

and their history doesnt compare to britain - they had max schmeling, but we had the marquess of queensbury.

Exactly. Attendances are average, the fights are 90% mismatches, no amateur success to speak of, TV coverage of international fights doesn´t exist, and the only German fighters are Ukrainians, Armenians, Russians, Cubans, Croatians, Hungarians, Bosnians, Poles, Romanians, Uzbeks and Turks.

Boxing culture is boxing culture. How many Americans box in America??? Big fights, big promotions, televised fights, small town shows.......its all a culture. Nobody said anything about DOMESTIC fighters. Hell, Japan plays host to that Valero guy, I guess Japan has no boxing culture cos Valero is an South American....

I have to agree with you. English fans are more passionate and England produces better boxes. The fanbase in Germany is larger however. England wins in two out of three categories that means England will be placed above Germany.

surely the 'number of fans' should be relative to the population? otherwise puerto rico gets embarrassed.

Normally I criticize thread starters for not clarifying what they are talking about. This is the ultra-rare case where I think the 3 different factors should be debated separately and then this thread should have followed.

I watch a lot of boxing, but these are topics that watching boxing doesn't really help that much.

It does seem unfair to penalize Germany for not producing homegrown fighters when they compensate so much for it by latching on to other fighters based there. That could be seen as proof that they are better boxing fans.

Watching a Thai fight kicks ass when they do their cheer for every punch.

    Argentina might be being overlooked.
