Two outstanding Bantamweight champs of the early 80s, they never fought... I have never seen this substantiated but Chandler beat the heck out of Gustavo Martinez, one of Pintor's chief sparring partners and Martinez supposedly advised Pintor to avoid him... given Pintor's track record of facing tough opposition, his gallant and remarkable struggle against Wilfredo Gomez. etc. ... I don't think there's a whole lot to that theory... Chandler was a sharp boxer, had a stinging right hand and excellent quickness... He showed a sturdy chin his whole career until appearing inexplicably vulnerable and impotent in his final career bout against Richie Sandoval... still he held the title over three years, made 9 defenses Pintor of course was a sturdy and strong Bantamweight with respectable power... he's most well known, however, for a loss (Gomez, in one of the all-time best fights) , a tragic win (Johnny Owen, which haunted him for years) and a major controversy (the utterly bizarre scoring discrepancies inolved in his title win over Carlos Zarate) ... regardless, he was a very good champ in his own right... the two men fought a lot of the same opponents with similar results for the most part, though Pintor's existence seems to have been ignored by many since 1984 or so who wins this battle between the skillful dark-skinned guy who Ron King (one of the most useless non-contributors in this site's history) memorably thought was "some white guy" and the tough, game man from south of the border? 15 rounds
Chandler was a sharp boxer but he wasn't clinical in any sense of the word which means he'd likely oblige Pintor on the inside eventually, giving Pintor the best chance he could have to win. Still, I don't see either guy getting knocked out, so my guess is, Chandler, with his superior hand-speed, wins a decision in a very entertaining fight that features a pleasing clash of styles.
I agree... I think Chandler's ability to get his shots off quicker is the difference in a great fight
It really is... At that point, there was no turning back... the guy could never be taken seriously again for a minute:giggle:
