I know I've done this before, but I can't be bothered to look for the previous thread. What happens? I'll tell you what the fuck happens...Calzaghe wins, that's what. It's actually virtually impossible for Hagler to win this one based upon the styles. Calzaghe is bigger, taller, faster and Hagler doesn't have the southpaw advantage, In addition to this Calzaghe matches the marvelous one in stamina and workrate. Hagler was a solid puncher but not a one punch specialist, and Calzaghe has proven a dependable chin. Hagler is the greater fighter, no doubt, but this fight he'd lose.
I'm not so sure. I think the Hagler who fought SRL would probably lose to Calzaghe, but the guy who fought Mugabi? Or Duran? He's faster than you think, and would've used his jab a lot.
since Hagler never weighed 168 for any fight, I dont see the point of this other than to make Calzaghe appear to be this great fighter, when he really wasnt
There aren't many I'd pick to beat Joe at 168 in history, frankly. Only RJJ in the last twenty years would have started a decent favourite against him IMHO in fact. I feel a lot more comfortable arguing this one than I do Hatton... MTF :Giggle:
Same day weighin at 168, I'd take hagler. Since calzaghe wouldn't be able to cut his customary dozen pounds and come in at 180+
168 is one of the worst weight classes in the history of the sport... it is a cesspool outside of Roy Jones, what other even mildly formidable Super Middleweight is there ever?
Calzaghe such a great fighter, he robbed Robin reid and got floored by kabary Salem. Oh yes, he beat two 40 years old dinosaur. I don't even think he'd win the super 6 tournament, let alone beat Hagler
The thought of Sloppy Joe beating a prime Hagler almost makes me chuckle. This is the Minter fight, only it lasts longer. Joe would get fucked up.
The Hagler that beat Mugabi was old too Double. PRIME Hagler is the one that beat Minter, Sibson, Hamsho, Antefermo in the rematch, ect.
I'm sorry... not to defend Sloppy Joe.... but the "Super" sixers, are ANYTHING but "Super". I'd take a prime Joe over Billy Goat Ward anywhere except for Oakland.
Assuming Hagler handles the jump in weight fine, he should win. Although Calzaghe is taller, Hagler has the longer arms and edge in reach. His long arms, jab, and boxing ability allowed him to outbox most of his opponents at range. And when he went into a more aggressive slugger mode, he was very effective in this manner too. Calzaghe could have some success due to his speed and unorthodox style but it wasn't like he was some defensive whiz or "pure boxer". Hagler would get to him often enough to win the fight.
168 is, I'd agree, historically a weight-class which many American's have bypassed entirely. But I've always personally felt that RJJ's best work was done there- he looked near invincible at the weight- and it is a division which gets poor press generally because it is one where Europeans have done very well. In the 20-odd years it has been around, 168 has had: Jones Jr Toney Barkley Leonard Hearns Nunn Benn Eubanks Collins Calzaghe As champions at one stage or another. You can then add solid guys like Watson, Kessler, Bute, Ward, Froch, Woodhall, Reid and Lacy to the list as decent enough, second tier guys. That isn't a bad collection (and I've probably missed a few, to be fair) considering the time frame and the dreadful rep the division has... MTF
I wonder what Mikel Kessler thinks. Calzaghe is the most overrated fighter in the history of the universe.
No....he's underrated. Overrated is a guy like Duran..who everyone says was invincible..yet was owned by Hearns and beaten by Kirkland Laing. Overrated is a guy like Hagler...who is yet to lose an MM even though he struggled with a blown up Lightweight in Duran and reigned over a weak division (with the exception of Thomas Hearns). Calzaghe hardly wins a MM....even though he's undefeated. How is he overrated?
Cause he beat fucking nobody. A 491 year old Hopkins who was a stylistic wet dream for him at that age is his best win by a mile & it was close as hell. Jermain Taylor has better wins. And Duran was OOLLDD in boxing terms, unmotivated, fighting 3 weight above prime weight. When he fought the guy mentioned. Lets see Calzaghe make a comeback now and fight some heavyweights see how that goes. Calzaghe represents everything wrong with modern boxing and how people perceive careers. His 'O' means fuck all. De la Hoy was a far better fighter than Joe Calzaghe.
Duran was, what, 33 when he fought Hearns? OOLLDD? Calzaghe was 35 when he fought Kessler and 36 when he fought Hopkins! What does that make Calzaghe in those fights? And you want Joe to now make a comeback?? Come on, be reasonable. And supermiddle (168lbs) to Heavyweight (220+lbs) is a much bigger difference as compared with Lightweight (135lbs) to JnrMiddle (154lbs)....proportionally or in absolute terms. Be reasonable.
*sigh* come on man. 'Old in boxing terms'. Post partying, getting massively fat, snorting coke & boozing like Nikki Sixx, totally losing his self belief and desire post No mas, etc. Calzaghe had barely been in half a meaningful fight by the time he fought Kessler. He was a child in boxing terms. And I'm aware the heavyweight suggestion wasn't fair. I'd just found it really fun to think about. I suggest he fights Wlad Klitschko to cement his legacy.
