Inspired by the "guys you don't stand in front of" thread. I don't expect anybody to pick Julian but wondering how you think it goes. I'm talking about the Hagler that fought Hearns and Mugabi and would in part let his chin be "back up", and not the boxer-puncher from his earlier days. Would Marvelous try to grind down Jackson in the same way? Would his tactics change at all feeling that kind of power?
I see Hagler boxing more. He jumped all over Hearns because that was his best chance of winning as he knew he probably wouldn't be able to outbox Hearns. Since Jackson wasn't nearly as good of a boxer as Hearns, I don't see Hagler taking the same chances as he did against Hearns...because he wouldn't have to.
Agreed. There is less reason for Hagler to jump all over Jackson and increase Jackson's chances of winning. Hagler had to fight Hearns in that manner because Hearns was so difficult to box from the outside. Also, Hearns was most dangerous when he got distance and leverage on his right hand. Look at the distance Hearns was at when he took out Cuevas, Duran, and later Shuler. Hagler being closer to Tommy made it more difficult for Tommy to hit him with his Sunday punch. Hagler fought a lot of the Mugabi fight in his usual boxing manner, behind his jab. Then in the 6th, and later on, he took it to Mugabi and beat him down. But he also jabbed the fuck out of Mugabi. Hagler's legs were slower, his defensive reflexes were also slower, and he was getting tagged more. So Jackson does have the proverbial puncher's chance, even against an iron chin like Hagler, but I wouldn't bet on it. I think Hagler outboxes Jackson, takes some hard licks in the fight, and then turns it up a bit and stops the Hawk in the mid rounds.
