Former UFC Welterweight Champions Matt Hughes and Matt Serra are expected to finally settle their long-standing grudge when they meet at UFC 98 on May 23rd in Las Vegas, NV according to a post made by Matt Hughes on his personal blog . “Just got a call from Joe Silva and as of right now it looks like I’ll be fighting Matt Serra in Vegas on May 23rd. This is not 100% confirmed, but I believe it is going to be on this date.†Hughes and Serra were set to meet for Serra's UFC Welterweight Championship in December of 2007 at UFC 79, after their stints as coaches on the sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter, but Serra was forced to withdraw from the bout due a back injury suffered late in training camp. Georges St. Pierre stepped in on short notice to defeat Hughes for the Interim UFC Welterweight Championship and then unified the titles by beating Serra at UFC 83 in Montreal in April. Serra suffered an elbow injury during that fight, which was his last apperance in the Octagon. Hughes has also been nursing an injury as he suffered a knee injury during his defeat at UFC 85 in June at the hands of Thiago Alves. With both men coming off of long layoffs, there should be no reason for either man to not be at 100% when the fight finally comes to happen over Memorial Day weekend. The four months between the announcement of an apparent bout and the actual fight will also give Hughes and Serra plenty of time to rekindle the bad blood that had been brewing between them for months if not years before the first fight. http://nokaut.com/?id=12&solo_news=2...6460710738ad93
Last time I heard about this he was retiring either way. This fight just does nothing for me at this time to be honest.
it definitely has lost some luster, but like TFK said, as long as it isn't a main event it should be worth watching. I think it is a great fight for Hughes to retire on. Not a Hughes fan whatsoever, but he should take care of Serra.
Both guys mean nothing in the title picture anymore, so this is their only option. Serra can continue fighting until he gets KTFO a few more times, but Hughes is basically done and offers name value only.
