WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik's promoter Bob Arum says he is in talks with promoter Frank Warren in regard to a possible showdown between Pavlik and unbeaten WBC/WBA/WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe. The target date for Pavlik-Calzaghe would be October 18. If that bout can't be made, Arum said Pavlik would fight two more times this year, in September and again in December. Adding fuel to the fire was Pavlik's destruction of Calzaghe's stablemate Gary Lockett, who is trained by Joe's father Enzo Calzaghe.

This would be a fantastic fight and the longer they wait, the less appealing it will be IMO.

It would B FOOLISH to DISMISS Pavlik's Chances of BEATING Calzaghe...

Sure, Calzaghe has a DECISIVE Edge N HANDSPEED, but he's a WINGER...Pavlik will MEET or BEAT Calzaghe to the Punch N Some Instances, w/his STRAIGHTER Shots...

Personally, REED Thinks Pavlik Would WIN...

Calzaghe leaves himself wide open for a straight right and that's Pavlik's specialty.

    Pavlik will beat Calzaghe.

He will beat anyone from 154-168, right now.

Joe would have to finesse him

I don't think he could hurt pavlik like he hurt kessler. Pavlik seems to possess superhuman resiliency just like ali.

Kelly Pavlik hasn;t ever seen anything even close to a Joe Calzaghe. I see no reason to pick him over JC right now.

Joe will be favored, and rightfully so, but make no mistake... Pavlik has a good chance.

Pavlik is good enough and steady enough that he's going to have a chance in every fight he's in, but that doesn't take away from what Calzaghe has the ability to do to him. Pavlik is the kind of fighter that brings out the best in Calzaghe, IMO.

Joe would have to be extremely sharp in this one, even sharper than he was for Kessler and Lacy. That version of Joe and this version of Kelly would make a fantastic fight. I'd slightly favor that version of Joe but if he shows up like how he did for the Bika and Hopkins fights, I'd favor Kelly.

Pavlik is one fighter Joe doesn't want to start off slow against.

You could be right, but lets not forget one big factor.... age! Its possible Joe could slip overnight, in which case Kelly could pull it off.

If the Calz that beat Lacy & Kessler shows up though.... Kelly will lose, and it pains me to say that.

Calzaghe didn't look very good at light heavyweight, I don't think he put on any good weight for the Hopkins fight.

I can see Calzaghe boxing cautiously, not trying to leave any openings...and like he did against Hopkins after the knockdown, not looking to slap in bunches but sticking to jabs and straight lefts. It will be key how well does Calzaghe go in and out against Pavlik, and whether can he keep from getting hit on the tail end of Pavlik's punches, because The Ghost appears to be very naturally heavy handed.

He won't be him coming forward as much to make the fight against Pavlik like he did against Hopkins.

I'm a huge Pavlik fan,but Joe will make him look foolish in the ring!! It would be similar to the Calzaghe/Lacy fight.

Pavlik-Kessler would be a great fight between two fundamentally sound sharp-shooters. Pavlik has the better variety of punches but Kessler is more difficut to hit and probably faster

Lets not get carries away with Pavlik wiping the floor with a very average fighter.

We dont know how Pav would fight at the heavier weight as Joe is not going back down.

    I would slightly favor Joe.

Pavlik could easily clean out his own division before this fight happens.

    Undisputed V undisputed.

I'd personally rather see Pavlik fight Abraham.

I don't really care to see Pavlik lose to Calzaghe, which is what I think will happen.

The stylistic similarities between Kessler and Pavlik are glaringly obvious and are the most obvious pointer to how a fight between Joe and Kelly would go.

Both fighters rely on a powerful 1-2, offense heavy strategy with little to no regard for defense and no evidence whatsoever that either possess the 'Plan B' you need to beat Joe, who is considerably tougher than many give him credit for, at his best when fighting guys who bring the action to him allowing him to counter and move, counter and move and, above all else, easily capable of adapting to the very style that makes Pavlik such a successful and enjoyable fighter to watch.

Pavlik's best chance is to stop Joe early, because he will likely have early success of the sort Kessler had and, providing his power carries to 168 (which didn't seem the case from the second Taylor fight and is not uncommon for natural 160lb-ers when stepping up to 168), he is very capable of catching Joe flush and hurting or even dropping him. If he doesn't, Joe will figure him out mid-rounds and will make Pavlik miss a lot and look clumsy down the stretch.

Again, this is THE fight to be made at 160/168 now. Two undisputed, undefeated champions is exactly the kind of match that boxing fans should be DROOLING over.

....if Warren was still Calzaghe's promoter then i may be a little bit tempted to believe this

.....Pavlk is no longer unbeaten, so a win doesn't mean so much.....the only real fight there is in my opinion, is vs Chad Dawson.....it is more meaningful

holy shit!!! we agree on something!!! many will point to the kessler fight as proof that joe will win but kessler, although a good fighter, is much more basic than pavlik. and dare i say not as well endowed when it comes to genitals.
