... anyone watch last night? So far, the series is 2 for 2 as far as I'm concerned. I enjoyed last week - in fact got more out of that one show than all four Floyd-DLH 24/7 eps combined, but surprisingly liked last night's episode A LOT more. Once you get past the obvious editing of HBO making it a pick-'em fight or that Floyd's in the twilight of his career, the work they're doing on this series is amazing and dare I say, Emmy-award worthy. The stuff with Floyd going through massage and hand therapy was cool - and funny, as they had no clue where the hell to go (most of the sessions are of the house-call variety). Some of the training is getting to be the same-old, same-old, especially since none of his sparring sessions are allowed to be filmed. Interesting that he brought Baldomir into the fold, though surprising that Baldy was with him yet looked the way he did Friday night. Fighters who go through Floyd's boot-camp style training usually come out in the best shape of their career. And Thanksgiving shopping with Roger Mayweather, girlfriend and son was something out of a guilty-pleasure reality. I liked the Hatton side as well. I thought they were going to lay on the Hatton-is-the-every day-man a little too thick, but they're handling that angle well, much better than the forced attempt w/ Oscar. Perhaps because we are in fact seeing the real Ricky, and that all of his comes natural to him. The process of the Fatton-T-Shirt selection was funny ("Jeez, surely me dick than that" as he looked at the pic), and it's great that Ricky both finds humor in the comments AND uses it as motivation, regarding his between-fight weight fluctuation. They also went deeper into his relationship with his 6-year old son, though not so much on that between he and the kid's mother, if there's conflict, cat-fighting, or whatever. They also further touched on the close family bond he shares with his parents and younger brother (Matthew, a journeyman welterweight), as well as his two grandmothers, who Ricky refers to as "The Golden Girls." There were some redundancies - as mentioned earlier, Floyd's training and comments are kind of repetitive. And they harped a bit too much on Hatton's last training before heading for the states. We get that he connects with the country as a whole. But - "This is the last time Hatton will do leg presses in the UK before heading to America... This is the last public workout for Hatton before he leaves... Hatton meets with his family for the last time before..." - a bit too much, and could've been done in less scenes. than offered. And you further get the impression that Floyd's gotten under Ricky's skin and in his head far more than the other way around - Ricky once again insisting Floyd's underestimating him, showing disgust at Floyd's obsession with the lifestyles of the rich and famous, etc. But none of it was enough to demean the episode in any way. As said earlier, my favorite 24/7 episode to date. Billy Graham had the quote of the night, regarding Hatton's between-fight habits. "I wish he wouldn't do some of it, but there's nothing wrong with letting off a little bit of steam if it's going to make him a happier person and a better fight as a result. But god damn, he lets off an awful lot of steam."
i thought i was going to be rooting for PBF but having watched the first two episodes, i'm thinking i will be rooting for hatton. i guess i'm a sucker for humility and down-to-earthedness. seeing a guy dancing around his apartment on a seg-way dancing to some shit just isn't very endearing imo. and i'm in no way sold on PBF's prowess as a father either. ::
well, I'm sure that's the intention of the show - to create something of a competitive rival for Floyd, who obviously favors the role of villain.
I thought it was funny when Hatton was making fun of the pad work routine done by the Mayweathers. Roger's son doing the boxing poses at the store after his mom put the juice in the basket was cracking me up. I seriously think they should give Roger and Floyd Sr. their own show. And I was suprised that Floyd actually had a good smack talk soundbyte: "He ain't been in the ring with 43 Floyd Mayweathers, or he'd be 0-43."
That was kind of sad to see when Floyd got his hands checked. Just shows what athletes go through usually when the cameras arn't rollin. Roger shopping was hilarious. His face when his GF told him he couldn't have a tin because it was dented was priceless. Ricky to me is getting as entertaining as DLH was last time. As soon as you get past the him getting fat and being "one of the people" there really is nothing more to add.
if so, she apparently didn't learn her lesson, as she kept telling Roger what couldn't be on the Thanksgiving menu. "You can't serve chips for Thanskgiving!" "I serve chips any god damn time I want." And as rjjp4pno1 pointed out, the dented yams can
It was funny, but also part of what I referred to earlier, that Floyd is obviously inside of his head. he seems to do it with disgust more than with his usual wit. For example, I thought it was better when Shane imitated a bunch of fighters during the Floyd-GLH segments.
i don't think PBF is in Hatton's head at all. i think Hatton's trainer is the perfect type of guy to have in his corner in preparation for beating on a pretty boy.
Double L, when you consider the fact that Floyd's and Ricky's combined record against your favorite fighters is 4-0, does it make you doubt your boxing insight at all?
Don't know about that. It makes good TV to see Hatton mocking Floyd. Beisdes, just because you mock someone it doesn't mean that person is in your head. If that's the case all of Floyd's opponents get into his head because he spends so much time talking about them. Hatton doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who's affected by smacktalk. He's a come forward guy and if we see him sticking, moving and doing the Rope-a-dope (like Frazier in the rematch with Foreman), Floyd got in his head.
no. but the fact that you discuss nothing except PBF and the fact that you defend his every move is virtual proof that you're worthless on this board.
i wasn't talking about the mere fact that he mocks him - that's to be expected of almost any budding rivalry. It's the way he mocks him - that he does it with such disgust. Its everything - the pads, the jewelry, the training, bragging on how rich Floyd is. As fun loving as Ricky is (or appears to be) you'd expect him to laugh off most of the shit Floyd does, and be content to just come back with something witty (which Hatton does very well for the most part). I don't know, maybe it's how he motivates himself for such a fight, just finding something about his opponent he truly hates (and with Floyd, it can come as early as the first spoken word).
:: in fairness, though, dymipepel also wastes... i mean, spends considerable time on subjects pertaining to Wlad and Tszyu (and all matters Kauki)
I know what you're saying. I look at it this way, Hatton did laugh off a lot of what Mayweather did during the press conferences and tour. However i'm sure during a grueling training camp your mentality isn't quite the same.
I'd say the "fun loving" Hatton is overblown. Outside of his immediate circle, those kinds of guys are usually assholes. Put it this way, if Tap, REED, Bigdawg, Sly and I wanted to slip into Manchester and watch his training camp and said we were huge Hatton fans, I highly doubt we'd be accepted upon sight. I don't think for a minute that's not an underlying/unspoken part of his disgust.
Defend his every move? :dunno: That's BS, and you know it. :nono: When it was revealed that PBF donated $980K to the needy children of his native state, I was pretty pissed at him for not donating at least one million. I mean, he was too greedy to give the children another 20K? WTF? 980K, but not one mil? I stated my disgust with PBF then and there.... But let's get back to the topic at hand....namely, that 4-0 record..... Would I be correct in assuming you picked Castillo to beat PBF twice, picked ODLH to beat PBF, and picked Castillo to beat Hatton? Is that a correct and accurate assumption?
I know he had tax problems as of a few years ago...he probably needed the write off. Imagine how much more he could have given if he didn't regularly wear over $1 million in ice. ::
Well, we can make all the assumptions in the world as to "why" PBF cares about children so much, but the fact remains.....980K, baby.......
when I hear amounts like that given (as opposed to round figures), it reminds me of Kanye West and his efforts to contribute to Katrina victims. "I'm going to talk to my accountant and find out the most I can give to the cause"... in other words, how much he can give AND still claim all of it on his taxes ::
Oh, and just to clarify.....By "needy children", I meant his children from the previous relationship......And by "donating", I meant fulfilling the court order....And by "980K", I meant twelve hundred dollars.....
yeah i was gonna say the same. Who knows, maybe he is (or perhaps - and more likely - among the company he keeps). But I've never been left with the impression that Ricky or his father are racist. Then again, I guess I'm not the guy to bring that element outta them.
