Mayweather Jr: "Emanuel Steward is an Uncle Tom"

    By Mark Vester

Welterweight star Floyd Mayweather Jr. continues to play the race card. He says the media and the general public are against him because of his skin color. He still feels that his status in the sport would be far greater if his skin color was white.

“Sometimes I'll sit back, I'll be in my theater sometimes, and I'll think: 'Imagine if I was the same fighter that I am, and I was the same person that I am, and I was from another country. Can you just imagine how big I'd be?' But I wouldn't change my life for nothing in the world. There's nothing like being young, black and rich. But there are certain things you think about. If Floyd Mayweather was white, I'd be the biggest athlete in America. The biggest, the biggest. I know that for a fact," Mayweather said to ESPN.com.

Mayweather complained that nobody treats him in a fair manner. He made this comparison to the media’s longtime treatment of Oscar De La Hoya. He says the media crucifies him for every wrong move and overlooks all of De La Hoya’s faults.

"One thing you never hear. You never hear anything negative about Oscar De La Hoya," Mayweather said. "Anything he do negative, it gets swept under the rug."

He then attacked the HBO broadcast team. He said Larry Merchant doesn’t know anything about boxing and called trainer Emanuel Steward an “Uncle Tom,â€￾ an obvious insult to Steward for not defending him enough on the air.

"Larry Merchant don't know nothing about boxing," Mayweather said. "What's that other guy's name [at HBO]? [Emanuel Steward]. He's an Uncle Tom. One thing you can't knock. You can not knock my talent."

Mayweather faces Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Floys is an idiot. He is not popular because he has an awful style and awful personality. Oscar isn't white for one and he was never all that popular with us meaning real hardcore fans. He was popular because he looked like a guy who would be on a soap opera and he was a decent fighter. Women loved him and he got non-boxing fans to watch. Mayweather is not popular because people don't like him. Frankly, there is nothing to like. He is ignorant, acts like an idiot and has an awful non-exciting style.

Whomever took that quote should have listed Black fighters who were popular Tyson, Gay Ray Leotard(shockingly awful style and personality although most disagree with me there), Hearns, Hagler, Joe Louis, Ali(who I don't consider actually Black, but most do)you get the point.

Shane Mosely has often suggested this failing to realize that he also has an awful and unexciting style and his personality is on par with Paris Hilton or Jessica Simpson.

surely if somebody just said to him the three words "sugar ray leonard" he'd shut up about this?

yeah his colour might damage his popularity - but nowhere near as much as his personality does.

PBF should be assassinated. The guy's a complete retard. It cracks me up that this is the same guy some "sports writer" claimed was "complex."

Complex? He's apparently a complete moron. And completely out of touch.

It's amazing he's become as successful as he has considering his attitude.

If Mayweather just said Steward was a 'company man nobody'd have much to say about it, because it's true and anybody who's listened to Steward on HBO knows it.

But that would've been a little more understated..and that isn't really Floyd's style.

I'm sure he's taken exception to some of the shit Manny's said about him on the air.

Maybe HBO should just let Steward do Floyd's post-fight interview.

Maybe PBF, being a professional athlete and an adult, should be less of a sensitive bitch when it comes to the criticism he receives.

Does PBF really expect that being a professional athlete, and earning the kind of money he does, comes without scrutiny?

The look at me "(fill in excuse here) because I'm a poor black man" is getting played out. Fact is people don't like Floyd because he's an asshole and extremely cautious in his profession not caring what boxing fans want, not trying to put on a show etc. The fact is White/Black/Yellow/Purple/Red/ETC love Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Tiger Woods, just to name a few of the most popular athletes EVER. Of course I'm sure if Floyd was presented with this he'd say they too are Uncle Toms. :boohoo: Floyd's statement is the equivalent of if John Rocker said "No one likes me because I'm a poor white man".

I don't think it matters what Manny's reaction is. I think most people are "Put-Off" more by PBF's claim that racism is the reason he's not the most popular athlete in the world.

manny has known Floyd since he was a kid...I highly doubt Manny gives a shit.

Floyd feels disrespected by Manny because Manny on many occasions has called Floyd's talent into question. Manny thinks Floyd's a good fighter, but not on the level Floyd believes he is.

Anyone with that mindset Floyd's going to hate.

It doesn't bother me. It just makes me not like PBF. I'm "put-off" by his comments, as you said.

Um, of course. If he was white, he'd still be the same hideous arsehole that he is now, but with lighter skin :dunno:

Apparently he thinks he failed at being the best athlete in america, judging by his words. He's crying racism as an excuse for not being the best or biggest athlete in america.

That's not surprising, Hopkins is a black sociopath aswell, and this seems to be part of the thinking allignment, given thier positions.

I disagree with Fraud, never have agreed with him come to think of it, if he was a white eastern european fighter, American boxing fans for the most part, would be SCREAMING BITTERLY for the days of old. He's lucky to be what he is, in the country that he's in, it caters for somebody like him better than any other place in the WORLD, - narcissm, greed, irrationality, grandiosity, egoccentricism, extreme right-wing values, social darwinism, psychopathy,...

..that my friends, is America, .....and proud :stir:.

Yeah but he'd be the biggest thing in sports in America thats for sure...and trust me you don't have to tell me anything about Floyd the person, my best friend knows him well and worked in several of his training camps and he doesn't like him and he tells me some funny stories about how much of a bitch Floyd is according to him. He has major character defects thats for sure

Not racism hes just made an observatin that is true...If he was white he'd be more rich and famouse than he is now. Some things are best left unsaid (something the Mayweathers don't buy into:lol:) nevertheless its true.

Which is why there is a divine and unprecedented interest in the heavyweight division, these white hopes unbuckle the gate on skin head rallies from coast to coast, as irrefuteably recognised by their american ppv numbers. No 'saviour' to be had.

I completely agree. It's race not racism that is holding him back. To be honest I don't know what is holding back black fighters. Perhaps there just aren't enough black people in america to support black fighters. If you think about it, it took RJJ several years to become a house hold name and he was probably the most amazing athletic guy since Sugar Ray Robinson. He was the closest thing to a Jordan in boxing and yet he couldn't even surpase ODLH in popularity. Some may try to point out that both Floyd and RJJ's personalities held them back but if you also look at Shane Mosley who was equally as athletic as Floyd and Roy and arguably twice as exciting but with a great personality he also failed to get over the popularity hump.

I think it's race with the addition of boxing falling out of the limelight that it was in in the 80's that is the hinderance.
