I would be remissed if I did not bring this fight to the attention of the historians on this site or the newbies.... This fight only went seven rounds, but was so brutal in that short period of time that the ref stopped it and declared it a draw because both guys had taken too much punishment. I'm talking about one of the forgotten, epic fights in a long, long time. If these guys were elite, elite, it would have made Hagler/Hearns look like a pillow fight.
Great slugfest. Unfortunately whenever I see the name Prince Charles Williams I immediately think of Bobby Czyz. Those two will be forever, eternally linked in my mind.
Prince Charles was a bad man, and sadly forgotten today. A prime version of him would have thrashed Sosa.
The same here. Bobby Czyz was another fearless, bad ass. That guy could take some punishment. He was also a BIG Tyson fan, along with Ray Leonard!
I'm almost positive this was the only double knockout in the history of the sport. I could be mistaken but can't think of any other occasion where both fighters were deemed unfit to continue in a situation not due to a foul. Unbelievable fight. Amazingly, the rematch was sensational yet still couldn't measure up to this one.
Roy was the Champ @ 168 when he Fought Sosa...Sosa was Roy's 1st Fight @ Lightheavy... REED:dancingBaby:
Roy was still at 168 and Sosa couldn't come down that far. HBO was interested in the fight, so they agreed to a catchweight of 171 or 172. On Hill... it was a couple of issues/compromises. Part of it was that the fight was agreed to on short notice after your boy pulled out of a fight w/ Ike Quartey due to a very bad case of the sniffles. So it's possible that coming down to 175 on less than a month's notice was an issue for one if not both (though presumably for Hill, since Roy was still walking around at 180 or so). The other part was the series of conditions requested by Roy, including a desired stipulation to cap the amount of weight Hill could gain between the weigh-in and fight night. In the end, they just agreed to a non-title fight and HBO paid Roy very handsomely ($3.5 million, which was a career high guaranteed purse for him at the time).
haha, i remember looking at my cable guide that month and it read pernell whitaker vs. ike quartey under its monthly boxing schedule. i was scared for pernell and was relieved when that fight got nixed
The Sosa fight was Roy at his VERY best! The fight was stopped a TAD too early, but Roy was beating the living shit outta Sosa and the fight would have ended brutally for Sosa had it not been stopped. I'd lovveee to see Glenn Johnson vs THAT Roy. The Road Whiner would have recieved a monumental ass whuppin.
