I might be in minority but I'd pick Roid. Spinks made a better career but prime for prime Jones was better

Not sure but i think this would be a pretty stinky fight.

Spinks would look to dictate the fight with his jab and try to land "The Jinx". Roy would leap with some power shots and throw some quick rights over the jab.

I see most punches not landing and a lot of feinting going on.

Yeah, I simply think Jones was a better fighter.

this trouble here is that a rangy-tall awkward fighter with solid timing and handspeed himself would be a tough matchup for Roy.

I think its a toss-up at either weight, because The Jinx could certainly put Roy to sleep with a well timed counter, and Roy could certainly win rounds in chess match.

Oh for sure. Spinks was awesome. I'm probably over-rating Roy, but my eyes keep telling me he's one of the best fighters I've ever seen.

Not sure why, but I'd pick Spinks at LHW yet Roy at heavyweight.

I think I agree with you. I'm one of Roy's biggest fans, but I think Spinks is being underrated here. Mike was a BEAST at 175. Now I'm not one who thinks Roy had a bad chin in his prime, but Roy never faced a puncher at 175 anywhere near Spinks. If Mike landed The Jinx full force on Roy, theres a pretty good possibility Roy would be on his back out cold. But then again on the flip side, Spinks never faced anyone as fast, elusive, or as overall talented as Roy. Its a tough ass fight to pick for me.

A boring chess match prob favors Roy.

If the fight became anything exciting, then Spinks' power would be the differance.

i wonder what folks would've said had Stinks senior retired unbeaten.

anyhow, tough fight to pick although spinks had much much superior competition at 175 than roy.

Wouldn't make a difference when it comes to this match-up.

the Lt. Heavy Spinks was undefeated in the deepest and most talented division 175 has ever had.

I actually would like to go further and say I'd take Spinks at either weight. Granted he didn't face anyone of Roy's skills (nobody has) but he did beat multiple great fighters of many different approaches. I think the flipside is that Roy never fought anyone close to Spinks combo of talent/style.

I mean the best analogue for Roy's Career is the Tarver fights, and say what you will about where he stood in his career at that point, but those are really the only markers we have for his approach to a tall-rangy counterpuncher.

Come on Jaws, Spinks was long retired by the time he was 35.

These last two lines sum up my thoughts completely. At 175, I could see Spinks controlling the action as he'd be at full strength. So too would Roy, to a degree, but not as much as when he was at 168, and now against a truly great LHW.

Both were unnatural (read: small) heavyweights, which is why I don't see strength being an advantage in either directions. That's why I'd favor Roy to win a decision.

it's pick-em even if they both fought stratigically. spinks wasn't the most exciting guy either.

I just meant he hadn't fought a style that we could call similar to Spinks until Tarver...I mean even thats a stretch.

Although with regards to Age, RJJ has got to be the least hit fighter in history, so it isn't like his 35 was a ring-old 35...whereas Spinks had been in some battles to taht point.

ill expand on this when i get home...

Blah shut it. We all know Roy would never have fought Spinks. He would demand 99.5% to .05% of the purse. Spinks would laugh and reject it. Roy would fight a garbage man on HBO. Roys fans would say that Spinks would lose or did lose to someone else and Roy could never lose so in reality Roy already beat Spinks. Fuck Roy and all who love him.

I favor Stinks confidently at HW
I still favor Spinks at LHW but not as confidently as I felt for a HW match-up.

I tend to favor Spinks, especially at 175, because I think that he is a nightmare style-wise for Roy (and for a lot of other guys) ... this would be two great fighters in a BAD fight... awkward, lots of missing, fucked up angles, the whole bit

if you could stay awake or stay tuned for the whoe fight you'd see a close decision in Spinks favor

at heavyweight, I kind of agree with Jake and X that I prefer Jones' chances, I think he carried his speed better up there than Spinks did

that said, beating John Ruiz is a hell of a lot different than beating Larry Holmes, regardless of the fact that Larry was in decline... still, Ruiz was soundly defeated, no controversy, unlike Spinks/Holmes
