Cotto tells Mayweather to 'stop making excuses!'

Miguel Cotto doesn't normally call out opponents, but the unbeaten WBA welterweight champion issued a direct challenge to WBC titleholder Floyd Mayweather earlier this week. "I have no problem facing the other champions from the same division," stated Cotto, "but they want to remain as champions. I am open to facing any opponent. When [Mayweather] wants and decides to fight, he knows that Miguel Cotto is here....stop making excuses."

A far cry from last year or the year before when Cotto said he wasn't ready; now he's saying Mayweather is making excuses. Cotto is entertaining to watch, but Floyd would outbox him 9 rounds to 3 or 8 rounds to 4.

Bob Arum must have given him approval to say this. This is THE fight at 147.:bears:

I think the fight will happen eventually.

Oscar just has to not be in the picture since both guys (or Cotto's team, since I never hear from Cotto whom he himself wants to fight) would rather get the bigger payday in a DLH fight.

Once Oscar's not in the picture, and Mayweather and Cotto represent the biggest paydays for each other, then we'll probably see the fight happen.

    I'm thinking early 2009.

I don't believe Cotto actually said this. I think some voice analysis is required to check the validity.

Cotto vs Mayweather is the only fight that matters at 147 right now. They are clearly the two best guys at WW.

Cotto has mentioned Mayweather before and said Floyd always makes excuses.

But whenever Cotto says something like "I'll fight anyone", it always seems to be followed with "I'll fight whoever Top Rank tells me to".

I also think it will happen eventually. In the meantime the hype for that fight is getting bigger.

If Cotto and Floyd win the rest of this year the fight will be made early 2009 and it will be bigger than if they would make it this year.

In the meantime they boy have to start insulting each other to hype the fight.

There is always, The fight, It was really Hatton vs Mayweather, but now that that is done, we will eventually Mayweather v Cotto. I don't see Cotto doing any better than Bruseles outside maybe lasting longer.

Good post. we all know its the fight to make and it "should" eventually happen. If one of them fights DLH I will vomit. I just wish DLH would go away, or at least move to 154 and fight Forrest.

I see the fight being much more like Baldomir. But Cotto is just 10 times better. Floyd "should" win. But it won't be easy and he better bring a lunch box and his hard hat cause its gonna be a hard day at the office:cheer:

More smoke and mirros from lil' Miguel.....Sure, he'll SAY he wants Mayweather, but like Margarito, Williams, Zoo and those other bums, he'll run away from Floyd, as soon as it becomes evident that the fight might actually happen.

It's ok if you think that. I have picked one fight wrong in the last year. I said that Hatton would be Mayweather's hardest fight, but Mayweather would pull it out. Hatton is faster and more smothering than Cheating ass Cotto. Cotto is not going to do well if they fight unless age starts to catch Mayweather by the time they fight. Mayweather will have to wear 2 cups though, because any time Cotto gets hit or hurt he decides to low blow. Oscar has a better chance to beat Mayweather.

You're comparing Hatton favorably to Cotto?

Perhaps you should watch Hatton-Collazo and Cotto-Quintana just to refresh your memory.

I agree with your second point in that PBF better bring his lunch pail and hard hat. But to compare this fight to the PBF/Baldomir naw I can't see it. Cotto has way more skills then Baldy thus will make PBF fight more in the pocket. This fight to me is a pickem type fight. Yeah I would favor PBF but Cotto has a very good chance to win. I'll Holla 5000

Comparing Cotto and Hatton as style match ups for Mayweather. Cotto is very good, but his style is not as good as Hatton's was against Mayweather.

Cotto hits harder...shorter punches, he doesn't lunges in with looping right/left hands like Hatton...Cotto has dealt with SPEED in the past...unlike Hatton who was never in the ring with someone as fast as Mayweather...

Cotto is a cheater...but NOT clincher HATTON?

The clinching helped Hatton against Mayweather.

As for dealing with speed there is a difference from just speed and having precision and stamina. Mayweather at this time is the most complete fighter in boxing.

And just to throw this in Mayweather beat Castillo twice and Castillo was not robbed in the first fight he lost.

Exactly. Cotto is simply a better pressure fighter than Hatton. His pressure is constant. Hatton jumps in and out, but he's very vulnerable going from point A to B when he does it, which is why he has to hold so much...and when he's coming in/going out his chin is even more available than Cotto's.

The two times Hatton was really hurt in the Mayweather fight, he was hit with the same punch in almost the exact same circumstances.

Actually I bel the fight was ended in round 8 with body blows. Hatton was finished after that. Go back and watch round 8 and you will see the exact moment Floyd broke him.

Mayweather hurt him in the 8th and the final round with the same punch.
