I like Leonard in about 10 rounds after getting hurt early...

Yeah right! Cotto would get the Davey Green treatment!

    I dunno X!

I was tempted to go down that road as well, but I remember Leonard getting hurt by the smaller Duran in their first fight and...IMO Cotto is the heavier puncher at 147. Sure Leonard never got hurt by Hearns, who hit harder than Cotto (I'm pre-emptively addressing that point  )...but Hearns hit harder than Duran too...so what would you say about that?

My thoughts, therefore, are that Leonard is susceptible to the left hook from a shorter fighter in close. To me that's the obvious explanation.

Ray WAS a master boxer, but he liked to get his hands dirty too and this could play into Cotto's hands for a few rounds.

Obviously, however, CLASS will show and Leonard will gradually wear Miguel down for a late stoppage.

    Davey Boy Green?

    I don't think so!!:nono:

    Cotto ain't Duran jackass.

Duran threw punches from different angles and had above average handspeed. He could box or brawl. Cotto is slower, doesn't throw combos nearly as well and Ray would not fight Cotto's fight. Even though, he'd still beat Cotto to the punch everytime. You bring up Ray getting hurt, well actually more stunned by Duran in their first fight, yet you don't bother to bring up Cotto being put on queer street by Corley and Torres. Can you imagine Ray getting Cotto in as much trouble as Corley did in their fight? Cotto would have got knock the fuck out.

Leonard would box Cotto from the outside landing punches at willin the early rounds. Leonard then would put more pressure on Cotto in the middle rounds before knocking out that eyebrow plucker in 9.

I don't think Cotto can beat Sugar Shane, I'd bet anything he couldn't beat Sugar Ray Leonard.

All this "Jackass" and criticism and you end up with a prediction that is the exact outcome and only one round OFF of what I said...

Yeah, but Duran could punch. Remember, he once knocked out a horse.

Only difference Mr. Ed is that Ray would dominate all the way. Cotto wouldn't win a round nor would he hurt Ray at any point. Now go eat a carrot.

This is the most important point in your post. Truthfully, you could have stopped here to negate anything Sly would ever have to say in this thread.

SO because Henry Cooper aint Joe Frazier, he couldn't knock Ali down with a left hook?

Cotto is closer to Dave Green than he is Duran.

Right, but Cooper did knock Ali down with a left hook, while Miguel Cotto never hurt Sugar Ray Leonard. That is a logic error, horse-face.

Stop overmoderating. When someone compares Cotto to Duran, they deserve to be called a jackass.

Leonard slaughters him in a lopsided affair, Cotto's face would look like a zombie after this one

Leonard TKO 10. Cotto would make him work, but no more than that.

    Agreed.

Cotto has boxing skills and determination, but Leonard would be able to handle both with relative ease.

I can't see Cotto doing much more than landing a few effective body shots.

    Leonard KO 9

I still see Cotto getting stopped within 6.

    Gross mismatch.

Cotto isn't a mismatch for anyone to be honest...he would give anyone problems, it might only be for a few rounds but he good enough to prove himself something but lose, just like he does against other great fighters....or Margarito...lol

He'd get the Cuevas treatment from Hearns, and Duran woulda beaten him within an inch of his life. Hell... a prime Curry would light up Cotto up like a Xmas tree.

Cotto is only a very good figher. In the likes of Leonard, Hearns, and Duran we're talking about special all time greats. Cotto wouldnt hang.

yes he is a very good fighter...and very good fighters have beaten great fighters before...or put them down or gave them tough fights and won rounds, they lose most of the time but they can be tough.
on paper if you looked and Mugabi's career and looked at hagler's career, and say they never fought before, you would probably give one of your famous "Hagler vis death in round 2" or say it would be a dominating 6 rounds before he knocked him out or whatever...but the truth is, when they actually foughtit was a tough competitive fight, that almost looked like it could go either way...
So maybe take in the fact that not all things go in order of how great a fighter is, but styles, heart, and maybe the things that would give great fighters fits...

Alright lets break down the styles.

Starting with Hearns, which is the most one sided. No short, squat fighter from 147-154 in history is beating Tommy Hearns. It just aint happening. Coupled with the fact that Cotto has never been able to avoid right hands, and never had the best chin... it'd be a MIRACLE if he survived past 3 rounds with the Hitman. Tommy would have wasted him before Cotto could even get going.

Onto Leonard, and to borrow a term the Brits use... Cotto has "fuck all" to offer Ray. I'm assuming anybody thinking Cotto could give Ray a decent fight might point to the Mosley fight. But lemme assure you... a prime Ray Leonard is a different league from the past primmed Shane that Cotto BARELY beat(Shane lost that fight, more then Cotto won it). Cotto had success jabbing and boxing old man Shane, but that shit just gets him slaughtered even worse with the prime Leonard. In addition to being badly out gunned with Leonard from the outside, Cotto lacks the footspeed and physical strength that Duran had to get inside on Ray. Its really a no contest. Ray would be basically toying with Cotto after 4-5 rounds. Then he puts his foot on the gas, and finishes Miguel with the vintage Leonard combos.

Moving onto Duran. Roberto gives Cotto the type of beating that makes the Marg fight look like a cake walk. Duran was every bit as heavy handed as Marg, only he had REAL power and not plaster. He was also waayyyy quicker, and a far better techncian then Phony. That all adds to a pretty bad ass whuppin for Miguel. Cotto has nothing for Duran either. He'd attempt to box Duran, but given Duran's footspeed and the fact that Cotto is basically the same height, and reach as Duran, that strategy wouldnt work. Duran forces Cotto into a brawl pretty quickly, and Cotto is constantly hurt by Duran's quick, sneaky right, and raped to the body. Cotto's corner throws in the towel circa the 9th and Cotto is just a swollen, and bloody mess, and Duran just pounds him while smiling at him in the process.

It's the disparity in foot speed & 'setting speed' more than anything which makes this a mismatch. Leonard is vastly too mobile for Cotto and he's gonna be peppering Cotto with multi-punch combinations much like Pacquiao did while Cotto sets his feet for those methodical combos of his. And Cotto frankly isn't hard to find, going forward, the head movement is minimal. Leonard's also easily smart enough to quickly adapt to a one handed fighter like Cotto by moving to Cotto's right, further compounding Cotto's problems ever establishing the range he needs. Cotto's a solid guy, but he's on the Cuevas level, not the Ray Leonard level.

I have a hard time seeing Cotto beating Cuevas as well. Pipino just hit too damn hard, and Cotto has never been hard to find or have the best chin. Cuevas lays Cotto out. I think Palomino beats Cotto as well, but Miguel at least would give a good go vs Carlos.

Finishing it up... a motivated Benitez would have badly outclassed Cotto.

A mismatch really. Cotto's chin has never been the best. What he has is the heart and toughness to take the punches and keep on going. But against Leonard, that wouldn't help him at all.

Ray is bigger, stronger, faster, hits harder, much more athletic, and yes, even tougher than Miguel.

Ray may start slowly the first 2 rounds to get his measure but once he does, Cotto is pretty much a sitting duck. By the 4th round Cotto will be running away trying to go defensive and since he does not clinch(Either too stubborn to do it or doesn't know how), he'll be on the receiving end of absolutely brutal body shots which will set up Ray's left hook to the head, and when that lands flush, its pretty much case closed.

    Leonard TKO 5.

I dunno even know what you saw three years ago to make you think Cotto could hang with Ray. He went life and death with Judah, and an old Mosley.
