Joe Calzaghe admits he finds it tough to make the super-middlweight limit, but it was Mikkel Kessler who had to strip naked on the scales ahead of their Cardiff showdown. The Dane initially weighed two ounces over the 12-stone maximum before shedding his underwear to hit the limit exactly. Calzaghe unusually had over a pound to spare as he came in at 11st 12lbs 7ozs. The pair then engaged in the traditional head-to-head pose which briefly threatened to become tasty as they rubbed foreheads together, before being wisely pulled apart by their trainers. Calzaghe admitted he would be heading straight to the local supermarket to pile on the pounds ahead of the fight which will take place at the Millennium Stadium in the early hours of Sunday morning. "Forget about the fight. All I care about is my fridge," Calzaghe joked. "Cakes, chocolates, sweets, pies - at this stage the only thing that matters is what you can eat out of your fridge. "I'll go to Asda then I'll go home and eat everything. I don't think it matters what you eat at this point. I eat anything I want, all churned up together. It's pretty disgusting. And I can't wait to have a pint of Guinness on Sunday." http://www.sportinglife.com/boxing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=boxing/07/11/02/BOXING_Calzaghe_Nightlead.html
He's not just under the 168 limit, he is WELL under it. Good or bad, I don't know. But the last time this happened, someone got hurt badly.
I won't lie i am starting to become a Calzaghe fan. All i ever asked was that he stepped up and now he has.:bears:
Joe came 2lbs over the limit for the Brewer fight. Now he is 1.6 UNDER it for Kessler. Somebody is getting their arse burst on Saturday. And its looking like Kessler.
He's MILES under the limit, really... And you can't even presume it's deliberate/part of some plan to 'outspeed' Mikkel on the night if he plans to go gorge himself courtesy of Asda between now and 1am Sunday morning... MTF :dunno:
For all the detractors, and for all of the criticism he has (at times rightly) taken for fighting some contemptible bums over the years, no-one can seriously argue that Joe has not now accepted the challenge of the last two serious contenders for his 168 crown (Lacy and Kessler). I for one cannot WAIT for this fight!!! :cheer: opcorn: :blobbox:
1.6lbs at 168 is a huge disparity. I wonder whats the thinking behind it.:dunno: Its even bigger when you think he used to be dying at the weight. Maybe Joe has just got the finger out. Maybe he has just got it wrong.:dunno:
As I said, he's miles under. And it isn't like Joe... For the sake of the money I have invested (courtesy of Mr William Hill) in this fight, I hope you are right. If he's in any way short physically for this one, he'll find himself in deep shit soon enough... MTF
 Agreed- really, how many fighters use the extra time to pile bucketloads of weight on before fight time?
because he won one fight, he's entitled to a reputation for, "getting up for the big fights?" just what other big fights has he had? does doing something one time entitle him to this reputation? if i spend one day in a lake, does that make me amphibious?
That'll be a 'yes' to my question, then... :: I suppose the Chris Eubank fight might have been a 'big' fight. Byron Mitchell? Charles Brewer? Lacy (the one I presume you refer to). I'm not going to even attempt to argue that Joe has fought an endless stream of 'big' fights against 'dangerous' opponents, but objectively you can't really say he's only had one 'big' fight... MTF
Setanta Sports are doing the fight, but is it PPV or will it suffice that I already have the €18-00 per month deal with them???
Maybe Joe was right on the money coming in but finally dropped that monster deuce moments before the weigh in
so Calzagne will be fighting a weight drained Kessler with a hand injury that wasnt able to spar throughout training camp :shit:
dsimon writes: No, but your boxing predictions make you about as accurate a fightpicker as your average amphibian, does that count? :dunno:
dsimon writes; You got it backwards Roboto.... Calzighe is below the weight, the Dane is ready as he has sacrificed to Valha that which is important to him.
From what I gather those of us who already pay for Setanta sports will already be getting it in with our subscription. It's a good day on the box all round today. Starting hopefully with the Scum getting beat, moving on to the Pool winning, then on later to Joe giving Kessler a schooling.:cheer:
Great day of sport for us Brits. Though i think you have a really really tough task ovr at Ewood Park today, lads.
I can't help but think one of the main reasons Calzaghe should beat Kessler is because he is British, and Kessler is danish. British people are simply tougher than Danes, who really, are just poofters.
