I just finished this up. Pretty good if you can get past the dry setup of the first episode or two. The main character is sort of built up as the real life equivalent of Will Graham in the "Hannibal" series.

He's essentially the guy who invented the art of profiling serial killers for the FBI.

David Fincher directed most of the episodes. Part procedural of current crimes taking place within the framework of the story, part interview process with past serial killers and part behind the scenes look at the inner workings and politics of the FBI Crime Scenes unit.

The best parts are far and away the interviews and psychology behind the interviews of the various serial killers.

    8/10

I couldn't go past the second episode. I lost interest quickly.

Yep. Same here panchtard - I lasted a few more episodes (6th) but the show just ran out of steam for me.

So I can't score or rate it, really....

It gets much better. I almost gave up after the first couple episodes myself.

The show really begins when you meet Ed Kemper. The real jewel of the show.

Pretty good show. Moves along slowly although that's essentially necessitated by the subject matter and history.

Yeah, that's episode two and we've already established it's boring after that.

Plus, Ed Kemper just does variations on Hannibal Lecter in a subtle way (e.g. Brian Cox's pisses on Anthony Hopkins')

Hannibal Lecter was likely patterned on Ed Kemper. There's interviews with Kemper out there before those movies came out.

..........and yes, Cox's version is my favorite of the two by far. Not as cartoony.

When you watch this show, you get him being scary, but also start to like him and feel comfortable around him.

Yeah, that's kind of the reason why he's so scary. The show got that right. The real Ed Kemper was (is, he's still alive) the same way if you check out his interviews. Guy never even got caught, he got fucking bored and turned himself in. Nobody guessed he could have been doing the things he was doing.

I mentioned this before, but a minor serial killer married into my family when I was a little kid (my uncle by marriage). He was picking up hitchhikers about the same time Kemper was. Nobody in my family really suspected this guy might have been a killer. A screw loose maybe, but not a killer. They don't really ever talk about "Uncle Richie" anymore.

Hitchhiker talked her way out of his car during a moment of self-reflection perhaps, and he turned himself in to a mental hospital where the cops caught up to him. He was never as forthcoming as Kemper. There's two they are positive about, and several more he was the prime suspect for, but he never copped to them.

Kemper should get his own spinoff. That actor was brilliant.

LOL, I think my Mom actually has pictures of me with Uncle Richie at Christmas or Thanksgiving dinner or some family get together from way back in the day. I don't remember the dude personally. He was put away just before I turned 5.

I think he still might be locked away somewhere in upstate New York. If you look up his case, he got what seems like a relatively light term, but I don't think he'll ever get out because of what they "suspect" him to have done.

He got 20 years to life with no recommendation of mercy.

In many places it's misreported as 20 years maximum, but I'm pretty damn sure he's still locked up.

LOL, it would be fucked up if he's not.

What do you think is worse, having a serial killer uncle or one of those touchy feely uncles who always wants to tuck you into bed?

It's this guy right here. I don't want to mention his name on here because my aunt is still alive and I'm being a bit of a blabbermouth right now.
