If you haven't followed MMA closely, it might be hard to believe that New York was the only state in the US that hadn't already approved sanctioning MMA bouts. Well, that changed on Tuesday when the NY State Assembly passed a bill to allow and regulate the sport. This had to be the funniest political debate I've ever watched. Some of the comments from opposing Assemblymen were literally ROFL funny. My favorite was from Rosie O'Donnell's openly gay brother who is a New York Assemblyman. Hard to believe this stuff was actually said in a real debate about the pros/cons of the sport. It's almost like Hanzy or Steve-Dave scripted this for him:
I'm watching some of the video on this. The opposition is basically making the same stupid arguments that I heard over 15 years ago when the UFC wasn't as popular. Back then, they were very common, perhaps even majority position arguments. They were still painfully ignorant then and are still painfully ignorant today. As to the video you linked to, this is just some ignorant gay guy thinking it would be funny to make a gay comparison to mma. It's unprofessional, but it's also harmless and ineffective, largely because it's such a stupid argument. You hear similar stuff from boxing fans who are against mma or from people who don't get amateur wrestling.
It's just ridiculous that a state that allowed boxing, wrestling, kick boxing, judo, jiu-jitsu, karate and muay thai wouldn't allow a sport that's a hybrid of all of them. Of course, if you think the ban had ANYTHING to do with anything other than the corrupt unions, you've got your head in the sand. TFK
It's not just unions. The mentality of many people is that they believe they know what's best for other people. That's how you end up with proposed limits on the size of soda cups. Not coincidentally, also a New York issue.
Wait til Dana White rebuffs MSG for the Barclays Center for first NY UFC event. This will avoid James Dolan's ridiculous sanctioning fees
