Jones Jr. vs. Kostecki Presser in Poland

“It was like dream coming true, Christmas in June – fighting with the man who was and still is my idol. I always wanted to meet Roy and now we are together in Poland, announcing our fight. It’s unreal,†said #4 WBC ranked light heavyweight Dawid Kostecki (39-1, 25 KO) today in downtown Warsaw’s Marriott Hotel.

“I know that David is a good fighter, tough and I’m sure he did see all my tricks watching my tapes. This is why I will prepare something special for June 30. It’s a great feeling to know that all the blood, sweat and tears I did put into my style did not waste,†– said four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (55-8, 40 KO) who arrived in Warsaw to announce his PPV fight promoted by Square Ring Promotions and Knockout Promotions.

And just after six hours in Poland he was back on the plane to US.

“I have a goal now,†said Roy. Previously I was missing this part of preparation, I was not able to push myself harder. Now I have a goal – to be a cruiserweight world champion, a title that escaped me to this day. This is why I agreed to fight Dawid at 186 – he is the first step on the way to fight for cruiserweight championship. Maybe even against Kosecki’s countryman WBC champion Krzysztof Włodarczyk.â€

Włodarczyk was only one of many highly ranked Polish fighters greeting Roy, who with laughs stopped idea that he’s going for “Polish trifecta†– fighting light heavyweight Kosecki, then cruiserweight “Diablo†Włodarczyk and in the end another great fan of his talents – 22-year old heavyweight sensation Artur Szpilka (10-0, 8 KO).

Roy Jones Jr arrived at the press conference packed with more than 40 media members, wearing a red-and-white “Polska†soccer t-shirt. He showed again that he has not lost his showmanship spirit, by presenting himself in Poland’s national jersey just days before home country will compete in very prestigious European Championship. He also added that he will be ready to sing a new rap song for his fight against Kostecki, but between all the pleasantries and fun, there was no doubt that both fighters treating their June 30 very seriously and with a great amount of pride.

“I must be stupid to take lightly a great fighter like Roy Jones Jr. I know that he will be ready, that he is on the mission but this fight is also a great chance for me to prove how good I am,†said Kostecki.

“There’s no time to waste – this is why I wanted to fly back as soon as possible. I’m healthy, my knee is great, for the first time in the long time I can do in the ring what I want. You all will see this on June 30,†added Roy.

Roy is going to get hurt and that is a bit sad, but he's his own man. It rests with him.

Yep. I don't feel bad like I would have if he was hurt badly by Johnson or someone else back then.

Guy has been shot and getting KTFO for almost as long as he was a world champ now.

It's starting to reach historic levels, which is saying something considering the sport.

 

The problem is, he's looking just good enough to fool himself. Late rounds with Lebedev. Distance with Calzaghe. A few nice wins over Tito and Lacy. Just enough to keep fooling himself.

And it's coming from not only one of the greatest boxers ever, but he was at a time one of the greatest proponents of retiring before getting damaged.
