Fightnews has him vacating the WBO interim B title and signing with GoldenBoy rather than fighting Montiel in a forced mandatory on October 30. Why? “My new promoter is presenting exciting fights for me for the very near future. Golden Boy is the perfect vehicle to take my career to new heights. I can’t wait to get started,†Morel stated. hmmm. Montiel is 31. He is 43-2-2 (33). He is currently the WBC and WBO Bantam champ. Morel is 34. He is 42-2 (21). I didn't see the fight, but it seemed most thought he got very lucky against an ancient Penalosa. Other than that, he hasn't beaten anyone of note since his 2005 loss to Martin Castillo where he was thoroughly beaten. Better options than fighting a 2-belt titlist at this stage of his career?
That's boxing for you. The more I think about it, the more certain I am that this phenomenon, in which a fighter can make more money fighting inferior fighters than he can fighting the best, has to be an inflection point of sorts. It can't be sustainable. My guess is it is a transition period leading to a consolidation of some kind within the sport, whether it's among promoters, TV providers, etc.. There's simply no way that this situation in which workers (fighters) make more money by making inferior products can be sustainable. Let's hope.
Your right. The purse bid for the fight was just over a hundred grand for the first meeting that was canceled. Montiel was to get 80 grand off that pot. Morel after taxes, his corner, promoter and other expenses would have been left with about enough money to take his wife to a movie.
So an interim champ of the wbo gets 20% on a purse bid? I know I've seen something along those lines where an interim champ will get less than a mandatory challenger, but i wasn't sure of the sanctioning body(ies).
Yup. I was actually off by 2 thousand. Arum bid 102,500. http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...ews&cd=9&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ca&client=firefox-a
