Myths about fighters debunked

There are a lot of false narratives floating around the internet in boxing about certain fighters. So hopefully people here can give a fair non-bias opinion. Hope I can debunk or expose some of these.

Canelo Alvarez only cherry-picks European fighters to avoid undefeated Afro-American fighters?

People can think how they want if they feel a certain way but my thing is to give facts stick to that. So to kind of break this down let's take Canelo's last 4 opponents.

1)Kovalev
2)Smith
3)Yildrim
4)Saunders

It's true they are all Europeans but first I want to point out that 3 of his last opponents were world champions and one a mandatory defense. So I ask objectively since when is fighting a top-level world champion considered a cherry-pick?

Now let's examine the last 4 opponents of one of the guys who supposedly Canelo is ducking. Demitrus Boo Boo Andrade.

1)Arthur Akavov
2)Sulecki
3)Keeler
4)Williams

All 4 of the guys he fought are also European fighters. But not one of them was a top-level world champion. Andrade didn't fight any undefeated Black champions either in his last 4 fights.

Let's take a look at the last 4 opponents of the other guy people are saying Canelo is ducking. Jermall Charlo.

1)Korobov(arguably gave Charlo his first loss)
2)Brandon Adams(154 pounders moving up to 160)
3)Dennis Hogan(154 pounders moving up to 160)
4)Derevyanchenko(Coming off a loss with GGG)

Again Not one world champion, not one top-tier elite fighter.
Not one undefeated Afro-American Champion. His Next opponent is Macias a guy who has been kod by Munguia.


Now here is a list of the elite Black fighters Canelo has faced.

1)Floyd Mayweather
2)Lara
3)Jacobs
4)Trout
5)Mosley(past his prime)
6)Cotto(Puerto Rican are black)

No but thats where I got my idea to make this thread. You caught me red handed what can I say. But still he makes some valid points. I dont see these undefeated black fighters in a hurry to unify. Spence is fighting a 50 year old Pacquio instead of Crawford, Charlo is fighting Macias instead of Andrade. What am I missing here Xplosive??? Please enlighten me.

BTW- as the mod i don't have to be "neutral." I have my favorites just like any other fan. But the one thing I have tried to do is minimize the race-baiting that used to permeate the general forum.

The only thing I'm gonna say is this thread was never about race baiting. Look at the thread's title. It was to debunk, expose false myths about certian fighters. I used Canelo as an example. I'm not making anything up there are like you said channels like Dontae, Akhi and EGO that are actually saying Canelo ducks Black fighters and is on a European tour. Again I gave one fucken example. Now I was hoping people would say yeah Canelo is a bitch and he is scared to fight charlo and andrade. Or no Canelo is not scared of fighting anyone cause he fought ggg when ggg was a bad mother fucker and fought Floyd at 22. Or give their own example. You made this about race, you like to snoop around and micromanage every post and if something doesnt tickle your fancy youre all over it like white on rice. Yeah I get it some racist assholes need to be moderated and possibly banned. But my thread and my posts in the past have never been about race baiting. I'm in favor of debunking all boxing myths. And there's a lot of them, whether it's how certain fights from the past actually went down, who ducked whom, whose chin was shit, who actually hit hard, etc.

The myth/revisionist history about Toney-Nunn, people say Nunn was badly outboxing Toney and shutting him out. It was only that one-sided on the cards because the fight was in Iowa. Toney was coming on strong from the 7th or 8th round on.

There’s the myth about how all the big names were ducking Pryor. They were in different divisions, but Pryor got offers to fight Leonard and Duran anyway.

Ali didn’t merely start doing well in Zaire once Foreman tired. Ali was winning throughout the fight, he outfought Foreman off the ropes.

There’s a belief that the famous pic of Marciano landing on Walcott with his face all scrunched up is the KO punch. It isn’t, look at their positions in the ring, as well as how Walcott’s arm/body positioning.

What was the deal with those gay photos that got leaked from Marquez's camp. Marquez was sucking his sparring partner's fingers in one pic and taking photos like they were a couple. They were laughing in the pics so I assumed they were joking around but I never heard any follow up on that.

 

I can only speculate. But I do vaguely recall what you're referring to.

Yes. And another pic sitting back in bed with the guy's head on his chest. Even though they were probably joking around, that's far from usual guys joking around.

 

Was Greg Haugen really a racist or did he use every angle to get under people's skin?

Even before all of the anti-Mexican comments before the Chavez fight, Camacho was asked about Haugen and said, "He's one of them white dudes that don't like blacks or Hispanics." So something racial must have gone down between them as well.

 

I dont buy the "oh he's just promoting the fight" excuse. We've seen it plenty of times when a fighter plays the heel in order to get views. But ive always believed a lot of it is not an act.

 

One big myth constantly pushed is that Mexican fighters used to be crude brawlers and only relatively recently did they learn how to box. Utter bullshit but you'll find this myth being pushed by major names in the boxing world.

I remember in the late 90s when Hamed seemed to want no part of Morales, Marquez or Barrera (before the Barrera fight) Hamed fans would excuse him by saying, "They're good fighters but typical face first Mexicans. Hamed would tee off on...."

As if they were just tough guys who swing for the fences. No skills or defense to speak of. Yeah, okay.

 

That reminds me of another myth - the idea that Barrera suddenly became a "boxer" later in his career, after having been just a "brawler." Problem is, there's countless examples of MAB "boxing" prior to the Hamed fight. People make it sound like he went through some metamorphasis. If he hurt his man, he'd go after them wildly. But until then, he had long been a calculating boxer. I think HBO tried to push this line to try to whitewash his loss to Jr. Jones maybe? The story being that he learned his lesson. But it's just bullshit.
