who wins? Actually, with Diaz' 10 win streak his confidence has never been higher, and he seems to have improved his game overall. GSP is the P4P king for many. How do you see GSP dealing with Diaz striking and ground game?
I think GSP wins by lay and pray. UD Who do you guys think would win in a purely stand up battle between the two ?
I still think GSP's wrestling versus Nick's take down defense favors GSP in a big way. But Diaz is good enough of his back with subs and getting back to his feet that it could be an interesting fight. Personally though, I think Shields will beat GSP.
Diaz slices through him like butter. Without fear of being taken down, Diaz is just a far superior volume puncher and is much more fluid with his punches. People will likely slam me for that opinion, but Diaz is just a better boxer than GSP.
Diaz isn't THAT good in standup, he was in danger of being KTFO last night. GSP's timid standup is still better.
GSP, timid or not, doesn't hit nearly as hard as Daley. He wouldn't be able to hurt Diaz. On the other hand, GSP was knocked out by Matt Serra who has NEVER been regarded for his power. But I thought most of us were boxing fans on this site. If you can't see that Nick's boxing skill is better, then my point of view probably doesn't make much sense. With Nick's constant pressure GSP would forced out of his normal timid boxing. At that point Nick would just dismantle him.
GSP would win, but I pick Diaz over everyone one else, Koscheck, Fitch etc. Diaz's boxing although less neat looking DOES have the edge over GSP, more fluid and natural, better variety, higher workrate. GSP's wrestling is just too good though.
Well I don't expect it to be a standup affair, since GSP doesn't play like that. That being said, I think GSP's defense is good enough NOT to get caught by Diaz. I believe the Serra KO was more due to GSP not being used to having a size advantage in a fight. Serra had all kinds of weird angles that GSP wasn't used to.
I disagree. I think Koscheck and Fitch both can beat Diaz. They are great wrestlers with great sub defense, this is the blueprint to beat Diaz.
They certainly CAN beat Diaz, but honestly I like Diaz's chances against both of them. Don't forget, Diaz trains with Shields, he must have a lot of experience against an elite wrestler. I think Diaz is just too good and well rounded for both of them. GSP is a different story, he's just as well rounded, and a beast of a wrestler. BTW Trpl, why do you think Shields beats GSP?
Well, no shit. But the question was in a purely stand up battle which basically means a kick boxing match. Again, GSP has really become a better boxer but I just think Diaz would overwhelm him. And let's be honest, Diaz has beaten better strikers at their own game. GSP wouldn't dare do that. He didn't even have the balls to stand with Dan Hardy.
No he fucking wouldn't. I like Alves, but the guy is no different to Daley really. Too basic to beat Diaz.
Thiago has good muay thai, that's more than what Daley brings. Diaz is not that good. He'd beat Dan Hardy, but that's not saying much either.
You might want to back out of this conversation before MWS rapes you. Daley is actually a former Muay Thai champion. He is as experienced in MT as Alves. That was moronic dude.
Say whatever you want, but he was very close to being KTFO last night. It was not a dominating performance but he did show toughness and deserves props for that.
LOL. Did you even watch the Diaz fight? Daley had a solid double collar tie on Diaz and landed some big knees against the cage. Unfortunately Diaz also landed some body shots in that clinch that were crunching.
not sure what the whole acquisition of strikeforce would mean to its fighters, but can guys like diaz and melendez now opt out of strikeforce and fight for ufc in their next outings?
No. They are still under contract to Strikeforce which is still a separate entity. The speculation is fun but my guess is it will be a while before we see any cross over. I would assume that Zuffa has some ability to move fighters around if they want. I'd love to see some UFC fighter (non champions) step up as challengers for Strikeforce belts. Melendez and Diaz are running out of viable contenders.
I wouldnt say Diaz's boxing is better than GSP's. Maybe his striking is. But one thing that GSP has that Diaz doesnt is a great jab. And a great jab can mess Diaz up. If you thought Kos' face was bad. Imagine Nick who cuts when the wind blows hard. I dont see Nick winning in anyway shape or form.
Also, Nick's confidence will be downfall. It almost cost him the fight twice against Daley. He isnt fighting too smart out there.
It is amazing how he basically got dropped twice yet never showed any respect for Daley's punching power. But I'm not going to question his methods because his relentless pressure is what ultimately beat Daley.
Zuffa owns all the contracts now though, so I'm pretty sure that if both the owner of the contract and the fighter come to an agreement there is nothing to stop them from voiding it and writing a new one. As long as both parties agree.
i'd hate to make a wwe comparison, but maybe strikeforce can become mma's smackdown to monday night raw. haha
