Heavyweight contender Odlanier Solis (16-0, 12 KOs), a three-time world amateur champion (unbeaten at major events) and Olympic gold medalist, still undefeated as a professional hopes that his name will be shortly recognized and mentioned the same way people are talking about world champions Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye. “In couple of days in Miami, I will beat Ray Austin. Vitali is the next in line,†said the 30-year-old Cuban residing in Miami.

Odlanier, you were an Olympic champion, amateur world champion. Now you want to become the best as a professional. Which is more important to you?

They are completely different. When you fight for Olympic gold, for a world championship, you are fighting for pride and country. As a pro, you fight for money. I’m a proud man. For me both are equally important. There are enormous differences between being a professional and amateur fighter. Being a pro means knocking people out, you have to be a fighter more than a boxer. The difference between fighting four rounds as an amateur and twelve as pro is a completely different, incomparable experience.

In US you are perceived as a very talented but not really loving a workout guy…

…because people here don’t know me. They will change their opinion after December 17, after my fight with Ray Austin. If I’m so lazy why was nobody was able to beat me in my 450 amateur and all professional fights?

What comes to your mind when you hear Tomasz Adamek’s name?

Small, very good cruiserweight who wants to fight real heavyweights – like me.

There are Klitschko brothers, David Haye…

The Klitschkos are boring and Haye does not want to fight anybody serious. Nobody, with maybe the exception of Adamek, throws as many punches as I do in this division.

Are you taking negative opinions about your work ethic personally?

    I do. I’m a proud Cuban.

Is David Haye a real world champion or a great marketing product?

David does whatever he wants. Has his English fans, knows how to sell himself. That’s it.

Would you like to fight him?

What for? I already destroyed him in 2001, when we were fighting for the world championship in Dublin, when ref was protecting him from a KO. It would be the same this time.

Before you will be able to challenge Vitali for his WBC title, you have to beat Ray Austin.

We are aware of what Ray brings to the table, heavy punch, experience. I will not make any predictions, except that this time people will know for sure how good a boxer I am. It’s personal this time around.

You will fight at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. Almost like fighting in Cuba…

Almost. Here everybody can buy a ticket and see me fighting. Cuba would be different, but I don’t want to talk about it and make problems…

I don't know about 450 Ammy fights...he may be counting some sort of club smokers from back in Cuba which never went onto his official record.

You know I never understood why Haye hasn't taken the fight with Solis, it's not like the don't have a previous which would translate into an easily made fight.

The line I need explained is the one about people changing their opinions after the fight, because I haven't seen any television outlet listed for this fight, and even if people did see it, he's still only fighting Ray Austin.

Odlanier has been getting fat and rich in Germany, I wonder if that wasn't what the interviewer was alluding to when he asked about what sort of shape Solis was in.

Ireland has a Cuban Heavyweight called Mike "El Rebellio" Perez........most of these guys seem fat and lazy as all hell.

I assume that's what the interviewer was alluding to, but I don't think Solis' response was meant to imply we can expect him to be under 250 lbs. for the fight.

I took it to be more about his performance, which won't have very many people watching, despite the fact that it will have some title fight ramifications.

Possibly that's him, I did hear McCrory had a gym of Cubans alright.

A curse upon the house of every fat heavyweight. This guy is good but nowhere near as good as he might be if he weren't a tub of fucking goo.

if it's true, he stayed amateur for far too long and that's why he's such an old ass and still just a prospect.

If he was 225lb he'd be a genuine contender to beat the Klits. As is he's just another slow footed plodder who they'll keep a arm range before he quits on his stool due to having more estrogen in his system than a pregnant corn fed cow.

Yup. Shame really- as you say, the guy is one of a few who may just have posed the Klits some problems. Now the only likely problem he poses is that he might try and eat one (or both) of them...

Haye came within one clean shot of stopping Solis, and the Amateur System of administering a count every time a punch lands is what saved Solis.

That said, that fight with Solis remains a microcosm of Hayes career: dangerous early, but prone to exhaustion and incapable of dealing with pressure and speed from a well-drilled and fresh opponent.

Haye caught him with a good shot early, but Solis didn't even look hurt, he stumbled back but his legs were fine and he had his guard up when the ref jumped in. The Haye proceeded to get battered.

embarrassing that Austin is like 5" taller than him, not exactly in fantastic shape himself, yet is still 20 lb lighter than a "slimmer" version of Solis.

Between the 4 of them they have precisely two notable wins. Cockell over a La Stranza on the very precipice of shotness and Foreman's fluke KO over Moorer.

None of these guys is worth remembering. There never will be a fat boxer worth remembering just like there'll never be a fat Footballer or basketballer worth remembering.

    They can all die slow.

So is anybody going to be able to watch this broadcast?

Tavoris Cloud-Fulgencio Zuniga, Ricardo Mayorga-Michael Walker are also on it.

Solis looked like he would have survived, I agree. And he beat up Haye starting in the 2nd rd.

One cool thing about that video is that it shows how scoring in the ams can really work. I still don't know why everything went to hell in 2007 world ams and especially at the 2008 olympics when punches just weren't being scored.
