I really want to see everyone's take on this fight. It really is one of the best match-ups in MMA history. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem to be generating as much hype as it probably should be.

This is an impossible one for me to call. Normally, even if I end up being dead wrong, I can pick the guy I think will win. In this one I end up going back and forth without coming to a clear conclusion.

On one hand, JDS is one of the most technically sound boxers in MMA. And his takedown defense against Carwin really elevated his status in my book. In addition, against both Carwin and Nelson, I think Dos Santos proved his chin is sturdy. So basically if he can keep fights standing, there likely isn't anyone that will beat him. Well, almost.

Because in the other corner you've got Velasquez. The dude has grown in leaps and bounds. He's explosive, fearless and continues to generate gym cardio stories that almost border on insane. While his striking isn't nearly as sound as JDS's, it is still crisp, fast and seems to be gaining some power in recent fights. And his wrestling pedigree would seem to give him a decent grappling advantage over Junior.

My pick right now would be Cain winning via a late ground and pound stoppage as somewhere around late in the 3rd round he starts having success with his takedowns as his stamina overtakes Dos Santos.

In about 5 minutes I'll probably go back to JDS via late TKO.

    Who knows?

Isn't JDS the chap that punches with his chin up in the air?

Not sure I agree. No doubt, young flattop pre-Steward Lewis did. That was corrected over time, however.

Steward loves the stand straight up chin out technique with his tall fighters. Wlad fights like that all the time too. Lewis famous fragile Chin was a result of him keeping his chin up all the time.

Hearns' chin was a bit up there, but that was kind of to be expected when he was 2ft taller than the welters and Jr. Middles.

Either way, the fighter in question doesn't hold the height advantages that LL did.

From what I've seen, he definitely holds skill advantages. You raise a good point though: will his tendency to keep his chin untucked work against him?

While you are right, he is only slightly taller than the majority of his opponents, his boxing style has been superior to them, so he must be doing something right. Remember, boxing in MMA isnt the same as pro boxing. You have much more factors to deal with.

It hasnt yet and against better strikers than Cain. That being said, when it comes to any combat sport, anything can happen.

Wow, it's amazing where this thread went. I didn't say JDS was a world class boxer. I said he is one of the most technically sound boxers in MMA. Nothing more, nothing less.

His boxing is easily among the best in the sport. The chin up in the air seems to be relatively common among Brazilian fighters. I noticed that even Lil Nog has this tendency.

JDS' time has finally arrived. Can't wait for the fight. He is knocking the china chinned Cain the fuck out in a round. Yup a single round.

And people will claim that Cain wasn't all that good and the sport evolved, and he lost 'cause he faced a more well-rounded, modern MMA fighter.

everytime i see cain fight or in an interview hes more and more exuding that aura of invincibility that young iron mike had. plus his head is the size of a ginormous bowling ball.

i cant see jds beating him or anyone for that matter for a long while, like tyson.

of course i could be wrong.

im pretty confident that jds will win, just a much more relaxed confident fighter, and as some mentioned has better boxing in what i believe will be a standup battle.

In the weigh ins, Cain looked very soft.

Before the weigh in I was favoring Henderson just because of how well rounded the dude is. He's probably the best wrestler Guida has faced since way back when Huerta beat him. It's really amazing that Guida hasn't faced any of the really good current wrestlers at 155.

That being said, it looked like Henderson had a difficult cut. He looked like death at the weigh in and he knew before he stepped on the scale that he was close to being over. He stripped down to nothing and tipped in at 156.

If Henderson's stamina isn't 100% Guida will absolute wear him down and win this over the late 2nd and 3rd rounds.

By the way, I am now leaning toward JDS. Cain looked a little soft and rust could be a terrible thing against a sharp, techical striker like JDS. Plus, in looking at their UFC's careers, I can't remember JDS ever struggling. Meanwhile Cain had some problems with Kongo.

So my pick in this fight is utterly meaningless because I keep going back and forth. But I now like JDS via stoppage in the 3rd. Arghh... I can't wait for this one.

Well, Henderson-Guida was a great fight. The UFC should have broadcast this one on FOX as well. It was a 3 round war.

And Henderson is the most deserving title challenger for Edgar.

Yeah, surprised that wasn't broadcast on Fox tbh. Benson is very good, very well rounded.

I agree with you Trpl about JDS, I go back and forth too, and the reason for that is obvious - they are the 2 best heavyweights. Stylistically it doesn't seem like one has a huge advantage either.

I'm sticking with my pick of JDS, but no outcome would surprise me.

How do you think Benson would do against Edgar? I would pick Edgar to win, confidently, but it would be a fight for sure.
