Good list even though most of them are crap. Overboard is at the bottom of my list though. Sixteen Candles, Some Kind of Wonderful, 10 Things I Hate About You, She's Out of My League and My Best Friend's Wedding are among the best.
In the same way 'Overboard' has somehow been rated 'Greatest Rom-Com Of All Time' on another. opcorn:
Nah... REED Wouldn't Consider "When Harry Met Sally" a Chick Flick...Neither is "50 First Dates" or "War of the Roses"...There's an Obvious SIMILARITY in the Genre's, but they're Different... REED:hammert:
War of the roses isnt no romantic comedy. Nothing romantic about it. As for the other two. Chick Flicks IMO.
I agree with Reed in this instance. There is something distinctly different about Pretty Woman that set's it apart from romantic comedies. For one thing Pretty Woman isn't that funny, it feels more like a drama, and it feels a lot more like a realistic type movie (which is where you get that drama feeling from). A couple other films I'd put in that category of chick flick is Sleeping With The Enemy and My Best Friends Wedding. I can see why AntAKnee would get defensive about this opinion. A chick flick is a negative classification for a film and most guys don't want to be associated with liking them. If you could find another name for the chick flick drama I'd gladly use it if it fit. However movies like Pretty Woman, MBFW and SWTE shouldn't be in the same class as films like 50 First Dates, Overboard, The Wedding Singer, etc. The comedy in chick flicks are different and are the type of general comedy scenes found in all films, even your average drama.
Im not defensive about anything. Pretty Woman is a chick flick. Its a romantic comedy. that movie was fucking hilarious. Sleeping with the enemy is a drama. What the hell is so romantic about getting beaten all the time? 50 first dates is loved by many women. Cant say the the same for other sandler films. Which IMO makes it a Romantic comedy chick flick. I like chick flicks btw.
There is a very thin line to distinguish the main genre with its subgenre when romance is involved. For example, Shallow Hal is a comedy that its main plot is romance. It can fall in either category. Same with The Princess Bride and Splash!.
If REED Isn't Mistaken, "War of the Roses" Ended w/Michael Douglas & Kathleen Turner Getting Back TOGETHER...Most of the Movie Consisted of them (Comically) "Warring" w/Each Other over the House, but in the End, they Got Back Together... A Comedy + Romantic Ending = ???? REED:dunno:
Some Films TOE the Line & REED has Acknowledged the Line btwn Chick Flicks & Rom Com's Often BLURS..."Steel Magnolia's" & "Waiting to Exhale" are Quintessential Chick Flicks...No If's, And's or But's about it...Neither of them are Comedies, However... On the Flip side, "50 First Dates" is a Very Sweet, Romantic Flick, but it's Tooooo SILLY to Be a Chick Flick...Any Scene Containing Rob Schneider or the VOMITING Walrus EXCLUDES "50 First Dates" from Chick Flick Status..."50 First Dates is a Rom Com... A Film like "Sweet Home Alabama" Toes the Line Though... REED:limp:
"Pretty Woman" is Definitely a Chick Flick... The Entire PREMISE of "Pretty Woman" is Chick Flickish...Stripper Finds Looooove w/a RICH Guy???...There's an Obvious CINDERALLAish Vibe to "Pretty Woman" which is Straight Chick Flick Shit... But like U Said, it's NOT the Least Bit Funny, which Automatically DISQUALIFIES it from Rom Com Status... REED:hammert:
