Junior Lightweight Brawl Rakes In $20.2 Million In Sales
By R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 3/27/2008 11:37:00 AM
Junior lightweights Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez punched up some heavyweight buy-rates for Home Box Office in their March 15 pay-per-view fight.

The fight, the second between the two champions, generated 400,000 PPV buys and $20.2 million in revenue—the first fight in the 140-pound and lower-weight classes to reach the lofty numbers usually associated with welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight title fights, according to HBO officials.

HBO senior vice president of sports operations Mark Taffet said the fight – which Pacquiao won in a split decision over Marquez – not only performed extremely well is historically-strong Latino and Filipino markets, but also in broader general markets.

HBO hopes the fight will bode well for the performance of its next PPV fight, the May 31 Shane Mosley-Zab Judah welterweight bout from Las Vegas.

In the interim, the HBO premium service will air several marquee boxing matches, including the April 12 Miguel Cotto-Alfonso Gomez and Kermit Cintron-Antonio Margarito welterweight championship doubleheader event; the April 19 Bernard Hopkins-Joe Calzaghe light heavyweight title fight and the May 3 Oscar De La Hoya- Steve Forbes junior middleweight bout.

We need Jake to give us past ppv numbers for previous lower weight fights. I'm curious how the morales barrera pacq and tszyu/judah fights compare.

Didn't you guys hear? Boxing is dead! :tease:

No reason the trilogy shouldn't be made now! There's probably more hype for a third fight than there was for the second so Manny should be able to cop that 8 mill guarantee.

I think these 2 could fight forever and every single fight would be close, yet people will still bitch about how somebody was robbed.

Think about how clean the canvas would be with Marquez constantly cleaning it with his shorts.

Marquez is a great canvas cleaner. He goes down in the most dramatic ways, I'm a big fan of Marquez getting knocked down.

pacquiao and JMM have given pretty good matches and they just broke the record for ppv sales below the welterweight division.

Again, why doesn't Arum want a third fight? :dunno:

he said maybe somewhere down the line. Another 4 years?

Because the reason the card broke PPV records was more because of Pacquiao than Marquez.

Pretty much.I remember Marquez vs Juarez was supposed to be PPV but they cancel because it flopped like a bitch,so they put it on showtime in front of a small crowd.

so why was Pacquiao/solis such a failure?

face it Pacquiao is clearly the draw but he never sold this much not even with MAB or Morales.

hell he fought MAB a few months ago.

Part of the reason was the first Pacquiao/JMM fight was such a damn good fight and people were waiting for the rematch for so long.

Now the rematch lived up the hype which is why people wanna see a third fight.

    Who cares about Pacquiao/Diaz?

as a promoter I thought Arum was supposed to get his client the best fights and make fights people wanna see.

same shit happened with Pavlik. He passed on the Winky fight even though it was a carreer payday for Pavlik and it's the best fight to make at 160

But I forgot both Winky and JMM can box the shit out of Arum's fighters.

which is why we will see them against stiffs like Diaz and Lockett.

Marquez's career purse = $1.5 million against Pacquiao

Manny's career purse = $5 million three separate times

Marquez seriously wasted his career fighting bums and not selling tickets.
