So i just finished watching 'Assault in the Ring' on HBO....the fight where Resto's padding in his gloves were taken out and he pounded Billy Collins really badly......Resto in the middle of the documentary came clean and said he saw Panama Lewis go with the gloves into the bathroom with the rest of his corner....apparently there was a lot of money involved (cocaine dealers involved) and Panama wanted to make sure Resto won......not only that Resto admitted that Panama used to plaster his hands before fights and the "mixed" water that Panama used with Aaron Pryor contained some kind of asmtha pills which cleared the lungs instantly giving fighters a second wind...looks like Panama is a filthy cheating scumbag....you almost have to wonder how many fighters under him had an unfair advantage in the ring
The question is, would Arguello have won a decision, or even stopped Pryor, had it not been for the mix?
well never know...but Panama could have given the water with the pills even before the microphone had picked it up the first time....damn...how do we not know pryors hands were not made into plaster before he came into the ring...LOL Pryor should be man enough and just admit he cheated..at least Resto finally did
nice find erratic IMO this makes Arguello and even greater fighter then before..he was potentially robbed of a historic win in their first bout...maybe if Pryor hadnt been helped by Panama Lewis...(plaster in the gloves, pills in the water, etc..) Arguello wouldnt have been in the tough fight that he was in to begin with.....he most def. was never the same fighter after their first fight!!!! Neither was Billy Collins shit...cotto has not looked the same after getting hit by cheato margarito
there's no doubt Arguello was softened up by the time the rematch happened. and it's not like Pryor didn't box at all in the first fight.
I never heard about this until now. Lewis comes across like a right scum bag. He doesn't seem to give a shit what happened. Resto looks a broken man. How good was Billy Collins ? He was certainly one tough SOB to make the 12 rounds.
If Panama Lewis was some Italian from the 50's, he would be revered as being symbolic of the good ol' days of boxing.
I love when people talk about the "good ol' days" and then talk about a period when the most powerful men in boxing were great guys like Frankie Carbo, Jim Norris, and Blinky Palermo. Or maybe decades before that when a HW champ wouldn't defend his title for 2 to 3 years.
Thing about this doumentary that pisses me off is the guy narrating it sounds just like Michael Moore. Makes me feel uneasy through the whole thing.
wah much? How about this? If Panama was some cheating welterweight with a nice personality who recently beat up another cheater, he would be heralded as one of the good guys of boxing.
