Los Angeles, CA (September 3, 2008) – There is an old axiom in boxing: “Don’t talk the talk if you can’t walk the walk.†On Thursday, September 25, WBO Welterweight Champion Paul “The Punisher†Williams (34-1, 25 KOs) will back up his claim of accepting every conceivable challenge between 147 pounds and 168 pounds, when he moves up to the middleweight division (160 pounds) to take on tough, hard-hitting middleweight, Andy Kolle (17-1, 12 KOs), in a non-title 10-round bout at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, California. The fight will air live on VERUS, a national sports network in more than 73 million homes at 9 P.M. ET. <!-- m -->http://fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=21808
I bet you Williams has trouble making 147. I'm thinking he's going to vacate very soon. How do you go from Calling out Kelly Pavlik to fighting some dude nobody has ever heard of? In a non title MW fight? What does that do for him? He's got plenty of guys at 147-154 to fight that would be more meaningful. Here is an idea, Williams calims he can't get a good fight. Well there is another guy who can't either, and he fights at 160 and his name is Winky Wright.
Who cares? He's fighting in September then again in November. That will give him 4 fights this year, with the November fight to air on HBO. And for the moment, Winky doesn't fight anywhere except at the negotiating table.
Unless he plans on blowing this dude out, I doubt he fights again in November. If he has a hard time at all, a month is not going to be enough time to recover and prepare for anybody but some can.
It'll be two months actually, as the plans call for P-Will and Arreola to both return on 11/29. Points taken, though.
I've only seen Kolle once, but judging him from the Andre Ward performance I wouldn't guess Williams will have too much problem beating him...the question would be more about what manner he does it in. I'm also curious to see how well he carries his volume punching style at 160 against what should be best middleweight he's fought to date.
Good. A journeyman like Verno Philips shouldnt have a belt, especially considering that he got it via a gift. Paul will win that fight with ease.
