Michael Jennings to fight WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams Chorley's Michael Jennings is being lined up to challenge WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams in the United States on November 29. Jennings, 30, has only lost once in 34 contests, but will be a huge underdog when he faces the 6ft 1in American southpaw who, last year, beat boxing's current golden boy Antonio Margarito. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/more-...eight-champion-paul-williams-115875-20703924/ Came across this today whilst reading the paper, and wondered what those of you who had seen Jennings fight make of this? My first thoughts were that Jennings is taking on a bit much too quickly. Jennings is a great fighter to watch, has a lot of heart and can bang, but should prove too much of a step up at this stage IMHO. Anybody give him a chance here? MTF
.....Pavlik-Lockett all over again.....he's getting a payday but has no chance at all (and unlike Lockett he doesn't even have the punch to scrape the tiniest bit of hope from the bottom of the barrell)......he was an ok prospect a few years back, but never looked destined for world class......so it is not a case of this fight coming too early.....he will never be ready for this in a ready-to-win sense.....but he'll get good money
Hopefully HBO will follow suit from Pavlik-Lockett and at least add a decent co-feature (on paper) to make the night somewhat worthwhile. I know the big push is for Arreola-Tua to be the co-feature for that Nov. 29 card, but money is the biggest holdup in that fight. You know Tua is pricing himself out when even Cedric Kushner can only offer apologies in best efforts to stand up for his fighter. :: But yeah, another typical mandatory coming our way. I don't blame Williams - he has to stay busy while waiting for Top Rank to run out of excuses for not making a Margarito rematch. But it doesn't mean we have to hate the matchup any less.
Never Heard of 'em... REED would Rather See a Williams-Quintana Condom Match than this... REED:hammert:
At this stage, what exactly is Tua waiting for? He seems like he is waiting to cash out but there really isn't a half decent cash out fight waiing for him unless he beats someone of consequence, and yet he just waits...
Tua's been "waiting" ever since he first got in the ring against Lennox Lewis 8 years ago. Seriously, he hasn't fought anybody better then club-fighter level in over 5 years. But if he finally take things seriously and gets in shape........................................... David Tua and Zab Judah are the kings of the "If He.....". ::::
actually tua has been waiting ever since he "beat" rahman in their first fight. he sat on his ranking for about 3 years waiting for lewis and holyfield to sort things out.
What do you think happens if Tua doesn't take the fight? HBO accepting Arreola versus someone else, looking for another fight, or just eliminating the co-feature spot?
Yeah, I've seen him fight a few times; he was a staple on Sky Sports' Friday night boxing for quite a while. Last time I checked, he was the WBU Welterweight champion (stop laughing at the back) and the last time I saw him he was fighting on the undercard of the Khan-St Clair fight, where he stood and traded for nine rounds with Ross Minter before stopping Ross. It was a fucking good fight to watch, actually- far better than the Khan fight turened out to be. Once upon a time, he was considered a pretty useful prospect, then he lost a close (but deserved MIHO) decision to Young Mutley; a fun to watch but no better than domestic type of guy; and had to pretty much start again. He's won all of his fights since, though I don't know if he is still a 'world champion'...:: He's game, doesn't take too many backward steps, seems to hit reasonably hard when he's hitting other domestic types and is usually good to watch within his limitations, he's never been stopped in 30-odd fights. and he's better IMHO than Lockett- the last relative unknown Brit who somehow got a title shot. That said, he's most certainly not world class, and I'd estimate his chances of winning at somewhere around 3-5% at best. And that's me being generous to a guy I've enjoyed watching over the years. I can't see them offering Williams-Jennings as a one-off fight, at least not on Nov 29. Not unless it's coupled w/ a 90 minute DLH infomercial for whoever he winds up fighting the following week (if the date holds up). But with that in mind, it's all the more excuse for Tua to force everyone's hand. I;m still baffled as to why Arreola-Tua is must-see TV, at least on an HBO level. Even if you want to argue that Arreola is what Tua was, Tua hasn't been THAT in nearly a decade.
Well, Chris Arreola is a piss-poor version of what Tua used to be..............and David Tua is a piss-poor version of what Tua used to be. So.........good matchup. :bears:
Yeah, I'm not that interested in seeing Arreola again, even as an opponent, and the only reason to watch Tua at this point is for nostalgia.
Tua is done, and has been for quite a while. Arreola just doesn't seem that good to me. If Tua won't fight the nipple, Monte Barrett will fight him. At this point Barrett is better than Tua.
Well, Tua's at a similar stage to where Briggs was before the Liakhovich fight...and he got a title shot and almost got a Klitschko fight/payday (though I guess how close depends on who you listen to ::). The problem with Barrett is he doesn't make the needle move. Tua probably could, even if he is a disinterested shell of his former self.
