Ike at his best stops him late.

The Ike that normally showed up for big fighs probably takes his foot off of the gas just enough to let the fight go 12, where Williams takes a controversial split decision in a fight where two of the judges favor Williams' workrate over Ike's far more effective punches.

I think Willaims is just to big for Quartey. Quartey was already a small welter as it was, but now he's fighting a guy over 6'1, with a good workrate. I don't see how Ike wins even if he is the better fighter.

I just don't see how Ike beats him due to his size alone. If Ike had the boxing skills of a Whitaker or Mayweather then I'd give him a chance, but the size and activity of Williams might be alittle to much.

i'm with maverick. i have a hard time imagining quartey winning this fight. he'd have to go after Williams, like he did Forrest. which could work now that i think about it, but chances are, Williams long legs keep him away when he needs to be, and his guts let him dig in when he has to.

Its not as if Williams is elusive. If slow, looping Margarita can hit him, then a prime Ike definitely could as well.

Ike is smaller, and is not as strong as Margarita, thats the point I'm tryin to make. Is this a p4p fight or at welter? Quartey is a small welter who was a very good fighter, but their is a significate size advantage he has to deal with to go along with Williams workrate.

Where you getting this from that Ike was a small welter? Ike was a SHORT welterweight, but far from "small". Theres a differance. Ike came into fights regularly weighing in at 160 plus. He might be alot shorter than Williams, but I definitely dont think he's smaller, or less strong. Prime Ike was physically stronger than Williams, thats the main thing Ike was known for besides his jab, was his physical strength. For my money he's stronger than Margarita as well.

There was a time that Ike was really overrated on MM, now he's underrated on here.

Smaller, shorter whatever the fuck you wanna call it I don't see him being able to get inside Williams with the size advantage. And you never answered my question is this a p4p fight or at welter?

Well obviously at welter, where else would it be at? Your acting as if Ike wasnt a natural welterweight or something. He spent most his career, and his ENTIRE prime at 147, of course this fight is at welter. He never fought below 147, so whats the point of making this P4P?

The mid 90's Ike would whup Williams. Your overrating height. Maybe if Williams fought like a Micheal Nunn or something his height would matter, but Paul is an aggressive fighter with a less than great defense.

Depends on how you look at it. If this was p4p fight I'd throw the height argument out and base it on skills. Since it's not then I'll go with whats there. Williams movement is also being overlooked. I think Ike is the better fighter but their are too many disadvantages here, and Quartey would struggle. I'm not saying Williams would shut him out, but i think he could outpoint Ike by a couple points.

Thats just stupid. Thats like saying who wins between Tyson & Lewis if Mike was 6'5". P4P is reserved for discussing matchups between two guys in different weight classes. Ike & Williams are both welterweights, no need for P4P.

Also I dont have a problem with you picking Williams, just dont chalk it up to Ike being a small welterweight. A small weltweight is someone like Floyd, or Judah. Not Ike Quartey.

Fair enough on the first part. They both are welter well Quartey use too be.

Quartey is a much small welter to Williams then lets say Maragrita. Shane Mosley is another guy who's a smaller welter IMO. Just look at their height. Just cause their small doesnt mean they aren't natural welters just small ones. If anyone doesn't consider Ike a small welter then their idiots.

How exactly does Quartey get inside Williams with Paul's movement and size? It's stylistic nightmare for a guy like Quartey IMO. At least Margarita had some reach and was alittle taller.

This is a prime example of Williams being overrated. Cats are going crazy over his height. So much so, some of y'all have said he could SHUT OUT Mayweather. And I like Paul alot, but be realistic about him.

Little ass midget, and shot Sharmba Mitchell was able to find Williams chin at times, why couldnt Ike? Ike was an elite welterweight, and in his prime his aggression and handspeed is underrated. Have you ever seen Ike's fight with Espana? If you havent I suggest you get it. The Ike from that fight was a far cry from the later year, just jabbing version than fought DLH, and Vargas.

so what if Ike finds William's chin. it's solid. Ike ain't knocking Williams out. which means he'd have to beat him on points in order to win. he's not doing it.

When Williams and Margarito fought, we saw the two best welter-weights in the world. It will take time for everyone to see this, but it will become apparent sooner or later (unless of course Cintron manages to KO Williams. )

So Williams takes Margarita's best and suddenly he has a great chin? Ike was a better puncher than Margarito. He put your hero on his ass, and hurt him, and he put a prime Vargas on queer street the ONLY time in the fight he opened up. Williams would have to box smart to beat him. I dont think he could win a war with a prime Ike. But like Jake said, Ike would probably take his foot off the gas enough for Williams to possibly steal it.

I have seen no evidence to suggest that Williams' size, height, or ability to box 'n' move from a distance wil keep him away from a strong, natural elite welterweight.

Paul does NOT use his height, does not muscle guys around - and is so offensive he provides ample opportunities for an opponent to find him, counter him, and get inside....especially one as skilled, quick-handed, precise and correct-punching as Quartey.

Quartey held his own and arguably (most say definitely) beat Forrest at 154; then held his own physically vs. Wright in a clear loss (but pretty competitive fight) at 160; at 37 yrs. old; 9-10 years removed from his prime.

A prime Ike has NO TROUBLE finding Williams or comfortably getting inside - and leveraging his stiff, ramrod jab to do so. Ike's jab was MUCH better than Williams'.

Ike went a bit more 'clamshell' AFTER his loss to Jose Luis Lopez, given Maestrito's brute power.

Williams doesn't have the power or accuracy to make Quartey passive like that, period.

Even if Quartey took that approach - I daresay it'd work for him. Williams' style plays perfectly into that approach, as Quartey could pick off shots on his gloves/arms, jab his way in landing clean, then open up inside.

Imagine Wright fighting Williams, for example.

Quartey could track down faster fighters and his handspeed, excellent jab and phyiscal strength - and correct, quick, short punching always served him well.

If it gets to be an inside fight - it's Quartey's. And it would be an inside fight after the first 6 rounds.

For all of Margarito's "height and reach" (btw, he only has a 73" reach, which is about average at WWT); he is MUCH slower than a prime QUartey, his footwork isn't as good, and he doesn't have Ike's jab, quick combinations, or distance fighting ability.

Mathysse was able to get inside and connect big punches on Williams, and often - he was just unskilled and had little defense and couldn't put together more than 2 punches.

What may 'save' Williams here is that Quartey's stamina tended to be suspect late...but that assumes Paul is fresh by the late rounds; and he most definitely wasn't vs. Margarito, who, despite being slower, clumsier and not as accurate, was landing regularly and had Williams backpedaling and hurt.

Williams would have taken more punishment from Quartey than he took from Margarito by that point.

I am not suggesting it is an easy fight for either Quartey or Williams...stylistically, Williams would be a nightmare of sorts for almost anyone.

You have all enumerated why...his height, movement, speed, endless workrate, etc.

But alot of those things are also liabilities given the right countering style.

I can clearly see a prime Quartey winning this one by late stoppage or decision.

    Peace.

Good analogy. I'm just going with a gut feeling. I like Williams style and size over Quartey, even though Ike is by far the better fighter.
